  • After our last video on the “annoying white belt elbow” ( • Annoying “Elbow in Thi... ), we had a few questions about what to do with the annoying white belt elbow in NO GI. Without the gi, we have fewer handles to use when trying to grip our partner and break their posture, so today we’re covering 3 scenarios in no gi to manage this unfortunate situation. First up, a triangle where we begin with control of the wrists, then use our knees to offset our partner’s balance to the front. Next, a variation for when our partner has good posture and is using BOTH elbows to dig in. Finally, a scenario where opening the guard isn’t an option - so we draw our partner forward, move their elbow across the centerline and create back exposure. Turns out that people have a lot of opinions about this - both doing it and countering it - so if you have your own preferred methods, feel free to leave a comment below 🤷🏻

Yea ppl in my new school love doing this even upper belts. It took a couple weeks but I’ve gotten pretty good at just creating triangles from it. But I still have trouble when they angle their stance like for the basic closed guard kneeling break but simultaneously dig the far elbow into my thigh while maybe posting on my hip. I love your videos and watching you roll it’s truly inspiring

Thank you! Try to go feet to hips and stay proactive with grips :) 😊

Thanks for the video, I am trying to work on my guard game more in class as I get better at mount and side control escapes.

So, I’m wondering why everyone dislikes this guard break? It is annoying, but not dangerous in the slightest. Does it work at higher belt levels? I have seen it work. So, is the problem that it is using pain to open the guard and not technique? Is it kind or nice to do to the guy who is your teammate? Probably not, but your jiu jitsu game shouldn’t always be nice either if you want to win at the highest levels.

I find this is best against people much bigger and stronger since I can’t out muscle them using pressure points is much better

I think its cause theyre not a more pressure style gym and a more pure bjj based. We do this at our gym cause were a bunch of bjj/wrestlers thatll grind and wear and try and get you to move to build momentum and pass or sweep or just exhaust them. Ill do this closer to the groin to purposely bait a triangle then clamp the hip tight and smash pass. Cant triangle me if i control your hips and not give you my arm to pass my throat.

I don't mind the elbow in my thigh. It is a nice deep tissue massage for me. Saves me from having to pay $60. I do have to sometimes adjust the elbow placement though. Can pretty much keep my legs closed on most guys.
These are good tips for when i want to do bit more and want to move

Would you be interested in making a video on passing quarter guard? Having a lot of trouble there.
    Thanks!

What about elbows digging in biceps or chest from closed guard?

I wouldn’t say it’s a white-belt-only move, ‘cause I know plenty of colored-belt students who do this shit every time. It’s my life’s passion to punish them the best way I can. They’re gonna thank me, in the future.

I don't mind when people do it, even though I do get bruised up pretty good sometimes
