The US is the teenager who had a huge fight with Mum and stormed off (probably on a motorcycle) and doesn't come to family dinners or help the family with problems. Canada instead moved into their own place near the family home with Mum's help, kept coming to family dinner every Sunday, helped out when problems arose and eventually grew into their own life as an adult.

Another time line would be that WW2 might’ve not happened if the USA lost the revolution. Hitler might’ve been a bit more conservative about doing war because one of the main reasons why Germany didn’t want Japan to attack was to not have the USA in the war. Also another alternate timeline would be that the USA lost but the crown still let them be more autonomous and allow the USA rule itself like more in the way of Canada now.

As a Brit we hear a lot about how Americans kicked our butt during the war of American independence but in truth it wasn’t exactly like that because the Americans had a lot of help from the French, Spanish and Dutch. And britain did not send as many reinforcements because it had to maintain the the rest of the British empire across the globe. Ideally in an alternative timeline it would of been good if America separated more peacefully and became like Canada, a commonwealth country. But it was a sore piece of history for GT. Britain when you think it was British people in the 13 colonies that turned their back against GT. Britain, their ancestral home after Gt. Britain helped America become a country in the first place.

So many variables that it is impossible to know, if Britain had won the 1776 war, would they have been so open to commonwealth countries self determination or would revolutions and total independence have happened in many more countries destroying the commonwealth, North America might be divided into Spanish, French, English and Russian regions, some joining Germany during ww2.

It's a good question, but I believe so. Canadian history may give us an idea of how the British government would have reacted. Rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada in 1837/1838 (centred around political grievances similar to the American rebellion in the 1770s) led to the British government appointing Lord Durham to report on the causes of the rebellions and recommendations on changes regarding the administration of British North America. One of the outcomes of the report was the adoption of Responsible Government for the Canadian colonies, making the executive of the colonies responsible to the legislature instead of the governor (appointed by the government of the UK). Albeit a simplification, over time, responsible government led to self-determination in internal affairs (Dominion status), equality in foreign affairs (after the Statute of Westminster), and then to being an independent Commonwealth realm. Not certain, but probably likely, that this hypothetical North American Commonwealth country would have had a similar path. The one big loser I see in that scenario is the francophone community in Quebec. Maintaining Quebec's distinctiveness may have been harder in a much larger anglophone majority superstate.

    • @CrDa-i7e
      @CrDa-i7e 4 місяці тому

@@ryanpotter3812 trying to predict alternative futures impossible, the failed rebellions may have had more support, the successful changes may have had less support, leaders may not have been born because grandparents never met, inheritances differed because the eldest did not die in a war, timeline would be different, interesting to speculate about, but it is i to say with certainty. Good intellectual exercise however.

Hawaii would likely still be an independent nation in such a world.
The native Hawaii kingdom was a British ally in our world, which had a white business owning minority made up mostly of US expats. Said expats weren't comfortable with the native kingdom trying to protect itself and it's population from exploitation, and instigated a coup against the kingdom. This lead to the overthrow of the native kingdom, and the US takeover of the territory, followed by further oppression of the native Hawaii people.
In a world like this said expats would either have to go entirely alone, and risk fighting their original homeland with the UK protecting its ally. Or try and tempt in a different colonial power - instigating a potential major war.

Slavery WAS a point of contention in our timeline. The Americans WERE forced to give Britain preferential trade and all other trade was supposed to go through Britain in our timeline too. One thing I think this animation gets really wrong is the impact an independent USA had on the motherland. It became a template for democracy in Britain, which helped to secure greater voting rights in the Great Reform Act following the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester. America has also been a template for independence movements and freedom around the world. As a Brit, I'm sure things might have turned out as described on this video but we might have all been slightly less free and we have the Americans to thank for that, however flawed all of our histories might be.

Many countries of the empire still had their own parliaments
here shows it’s better it happened the way it did.
    But with a few exceptions.
Today the USA would be more like Canada, less guns, better education, better health care available to all - not just the rich or those so poor they’re resented. considered a burden to society.
Slavery would have been abolished 30 years earlier than it eventually was after a devastating civil war.
Canada has had independence from the British parliament since 1867 when they got their own parliament who they could vote for.
When British, British-Canadian and American women were involved in woman’s suffrage British New Zealand’s woman had already been able to vote since 1893.
I have many American friends and I go to USA very often and today many STILL think that the 4th July is a sad day for me - it never has been and never will be because we have 100 countries who have their own 4th July (!)
And if the revolutionary war had never happened the USA would not have been as strong or rich enough to help us Brits out in both the world wars.
USA has always been looked to as the future until recently - now it feel like looking into the past.
If Britain can have free schools and private schools we can and do also have free healthcare for ALL and private health care for those who wish to jump the line.
Our crappy cheap health system keeps Brits healthier for longer than our American cousins with their bankrupt health care - it’s morally bankrupt and Americans are so brainwashed they continue to blindly follow the opposite of robunbhood - your rich steals from the poor and keeps it that way and everyone just accepts it ?!
    Crazy
And today if I were American I’d make a point of NEVER celebrating July 4th - not because it offends Brits - it never has - I’d make a POINT of only celebrating Juneteenth because you’re not free until ALL of you are free and that includes the slaves.
    - when the British empire made a pact with the leaders of the countries they colonised they mostly honoured that contract .
By contrast american USA history is littered with tales of broken contracts with native Americans as soon as gold was found on their land.
40 states and not even one could be an honorary Native American state?
I’d like to see a Native American USA president - sadly I don’t think that will EVER happen.
Americans are SO hypocritical it’s not even funny.

You also might have had less partisan government situations as like Canada and other Commonwealth countries you would likely model government after British model with multiple parties possible.

If the UK had won, slavery likely would have been abolished in 1833 (when the UK abolished it for the empire), a generation earlier. It seems unlikely there would have been a war over that. AFAIK, the UK government compensated slave owners, so why go to war? The US civil war damaged the US economy and especially the economies of the confederate states. So, the US might have transitioned to an economy without slaves, with much less bitterness and rancour between groups of states, and a much stronger economy. That economic power might have funded a much later purchase of some of the territories the USA purchased.
It seems plausible Alaska might have been acquired anyway because the UK was a close ally of Imperial Russia.
With the enormous economic 'powerhouse' of a united North America (USA and Canada as one), WW1 might not have happened, or had a dramatically different outcome. WW1 might have been settled by German defeat. Instead it was a harsh armistice (formal agreement to stop fighting) that curtailed German military power. That armistice created the conditions for Hitler to come to power. No WW1, or swift German defeat might have prevented Hitler's rise to power and WW2.
Hitler started WW2 by attacking Poland. Poland had a defence treaty with France and the UK. Would Hitler have attacked Poland if the united North America would almost immediately join in on the allies side? I think it's more likely Hitler would have attacked Russia. Depending on the outcome of the Russian revolution, it seems plausible the UK and empire might have helped Russia defeat Germany. Russia had the man power and territory to absorb Hitler's attacks. AFAICT, Russia only lacked technology and manufacturing capacity to eventually defeat Germany.
Further, Great Britain fought against the revolutionaries in Russia. With the resources of a united North America against the revolutionaries, the outcome of the Russian revolution might have been less damaging to Russia. This seems practically impossible to predict because there were some terrible people involved on both sides.
I don't understand enough to venture a reasonable opinion about Japan. The combined might of a united North American Navy and the UK's Royal Navy might have forced a dramatically different type of war with Japan. If Russia had not signed the none-aggression pact with Germany (eg. because Russia had been Hitler's main target), Japan might have attacked Russia _instead_ of the USA first. Also Japan might have pulled Western Europe, including the UK and empire, into a war to fight against Japan's attacks on European colonies in the pacific. So, if there was no war with Germany (in this scenario Germany only attacked Russia), a war with Japan might have been very different.
The UK was already developing a nuclear weapon before it shared its research with the USA (that research was significant enough that the UK and Canada both developed nuclear power after WW2, and the UK developed nuclear weapons, without US involvement). With the resources of a united North America, it might have developed nuclear weapons it in a similar time frame.
This is all wild speculation. The personalities and abilities of a few key people (eg Monarchs, Leaders or Prime Ministers) could cause unpredictable chaos.
    Best Wishes. ☮

Like Canada and Australia...the split just happened bit by bit naturally...even now because everything is running so well (except the housing crisis) even if we have a vote to break from the Commonwealth to become a republic, it's highly unlikely to pass because most people will vote to stay and have the monarch as our head.

All these nations used to be British colonies but still have their own accents or, in India's case, languages. If America was a commonwealth nation you'd still probably have your accents

That might not actually be true, we adopted a national health care system due to WW11, if the war didn't last as long because of the US being involved right from the start, without the huge death toll and poverty of our nation because if the war, would we have decided to have a national health service? Also, we borrowed the money from the US to fund the start of it, so would that still have been possible it they were still part of the Empire?

Very interesting points, alternative histories of course are hypothetical but the American war of independence was a world shaping event, it created the United States and forced Britain to find alternative territories to occupy and colonise, without the loss of it’s American colonies the British may have never colonised Australia or New Zealand, the American revolutionary war was also incredibly inspiring to the oppressed and subjugated peoples of the world, it’s Possible the French Revolution or Indian independence movement never happened. Just those few things are enormously world changing.
