- This video shows Corwen Broch playing a Finnish Jouhikko. This member of the bowed lyre family has three horsehair strings, with the drone string in the middle. For more volume and better tone most jouhikkos these days, including the one in this film, have sound posts and bass bars inside like a violin.
These instruments are for sale at www.ancientmusic.co.uk
Yay!- i am the proud new owner of this very jouhikko!
Thank you Corwen- one day i hope to be able to sound as good as you do.
This jouhikko has a very rich throaty sound. I love to play on it!
What a beautiful instrument! I enjoyed this video, the facts were well put together.
That's truly fantastic. Just a few strings and all that great sound.
Loving the sound of the Jouhikko. Sounds like it may be the kind of instrument Clemencic Consort used when they recorded the Cantigas de Santa Maria. I always puzzled over what kind of instrument they used :)
@Strumelia Glad you are enjoying it! Keep practising!
Reminds me a little of the Mongolian morin khuur, almost like the western version. Interesting to think that all that time ago Eastern and Western music wouldn't have been all that dissimilar.
@auringonhauta this Alto-Jouhikko is about a fourth below the normal size, around A rather than the normal D.
Wardruna - Fehu ( with lyrics and translation ) sounds like the instrument is used by that band
Suuri! Great! :D
more!!!!!
Nice playing and good sounding instrument. Quite a low tune you have there.
