This is such a good interview because Mahershala and Janelle are clearly so cooperative and respectful of one another, and it comes across in the commentaries they make
I love all the people in this film damn it! Janelle girl... what a debut in cinema!!! She´s so talented for music but also as an actress now. It´s incredible. Special mention to the 3 actors playing the lead and to the director for making the most perfect film since Whiplash and Fury Road. Oscar never went to a better film.
The interviewer wasted a platinum opportunity to engage two thoughtful artists about one of this year's smartest and incisive attempts of articulating the beauty and pain of black life. #sobasic
MrMMX then you've missed thee entire point, if you think the movie is "bigger" than race and sexuality. To state that race and sexuality is apart of the concept, isn't minimizing the full essence of the movie. Race and sexuality are the pivotal aspects of this the movie, and it's nothing wrong with acknowledging that.
They serve as a platform for this film, that's about it. race and sexuality are collective identities. this film challenges the whole notion of a collective identity. If someone always felt comfortable with who they are just by belonging to a large group than this film will definitely not touch them. It's more about going beyond those societal boundaries and finding your true self. it's most of all is about loneliness big time. The subject matter is very personal, so that's why i said it's bigger than sexual orientation or race. a group of people with the same sexual orientation or the same race will not equally relate to the character. some will not even disclose how they relate, that's why it's bigger...
She sounds like she didn't even watch the movie lol. Saying empty shit that you could say about any movie like "I loved it", "Very powerful film". Completely devoid of any damn depth, perspective or real opinion. Lacks insight, not remotely invested in this story and as a result she's weak. Sounds like she got briefed on the film, maybe went on wiki and read a film description just to prepare to ask some questions.
We have to be careful not to label others according to our own expectations. Could the interviewer have prepared better questions? Maybe.. Or maybe not.. People don't want to look at the "maybe not" though.. Whose to say this wasn't the interviewers first interview and as a result, lacks experience in asking the "right" questions.. You have to look at both equations before adding the numbers
Im glad the interviewer brought up the topic of community because watching the film I wondered why they didn't IMMEDIATELY take chiron home to his mother or call the police! No way a child can go missing like that overnight
blkcoverboy because people AND the world back when the movie is based years ago, was MUCH different than people and the world today. It was more common back then to help children and others...
MichaelAngelo Taylor i understand that now! but the movie didnt really make us as the viewers feel like it was set int the 80's everything felt current! even the use of jidenna "classic man" was throwing me off in terms of time period! it really didnt have an 80's feel in my honest opinion
I used to love her. She was to me like Lupita Nyong'o. Beautiful, dark and so unapologetic about it. Now, she has caught the black Hollywood bleaching syndrome.
@Alexander I agree 100 percent I felt like wen he sort of "took off his mask " with Kevin cuz he knows him the real chiron not "black" with the golds, the car, even selling drugs, that was" Juan " the father figure he truly adored

Sabine C aren't they? I mean you can see the respect they have for each other and the moment.
shame such a bad interviewer
Not to ever reduce the incomparable multi-gifted artist Janelle Monae down to just looks but the woman is absolutely stunning
Danger Pooch you're definitely not wrong
Danger Pooch woah you sure know how to compliment somebody :)
Yea, she is gorgeous
Janelle is a Goddess. Loved hearing her speak here and her role in the film.
i love him, he was so polite when he wanted to jump in and add to what janelle was saying
Mahershala Ali is a fucking legend in the making already.

Janelle's grace is inspiring. Wow!
The interviewer is horrible, Janae is not having it
The interviewer wasted a platinum opportunity to engage two thoughtful artists about one of this year's smartest and incisive attempts of articulating the beauty and pain of black life. #sobasic
This movie is much bigger than race... it's bigger than sexual orientation too...
The film is basically about self-identify and humanity.

foxtrotcinco Thank you!
This interviewer is terrible. Such a shame. I wanted to hear an introspective dialogue about the spectacular film that Moonlight is.
Great interview..janelle that's my girl

janelle monae is the most dignified person i've ever seen

Wow. Is she the worst interviewer ever?
Im glad the interviewer brought up the topic of community because watching the film I wondered why they didn't IMMEDIATELY take chiron home to his mother or call the police! No way a child can go missing like that overnight
Unless they have a cracked-out parent or parents. ...that's very realistic
Danger Pooch call the authorities! Aint no way in hell im taking a random kid home to my house without notifying the authorities!
My bad ...I didn't properly process your initial comment.

@Janelle was not having it....
Honestly.. People. when you are doing interviews DO YOUR RESEARCH
Of all the good questions you could come up with lady...
Dam she Fine!
Journalist should do research before conducting an interview about a film.
I'm journalist. Always do research before interview. The interviewer was very basic and unprepared
I hope she didn’t actually think it took place in the 80s
6:09, woah. I love this.
Ali is so infatuated with Janelle its crazy. The chemistry was sick
Janelle’s always cute.
the interviewer was fine, and maybe got an angle on these two you won't see in another interview. Janelle for president! haha
I need to know -anybody know the title of that instrumental playing in the first 25 seconds??
This woman gets lighter and lighter each time I see her.
I used to love her. She was to me like Lupita Nyong'o. Beautiful, dark and so unapologetic about it. Now, she has caught the black Hollywood bleaching syndrome.
Janelle's skin is still brown you are in desperate need for glasses.
he's so different from his character
Excellent movie I just hate the ending.....so did Black and his friend end up together or was it just a one nite hookup?
The ending was meant not to talk about homosexuality, just like the black community usually doesn't
Anotha Black Experience what??
@Alexander I agree 100 percent I felt like wen he sort of "took off his mask " with Kevin cuz he knows him the real chiron not "black" with the golds, the car, even selling drugs, that was" Juan " the father figure he truly adored
3:00
