  • When Gibson invented the Slope-Shoulder Dreadnought, they immediately had a hit on their hands! The short scale dreadnought is big and bold. You’ll never have to worry about competing for sonic space with this classic; it's perfect for ensemble settings where cutting through the mix can be an issue. These dreads have also made their way into history as some of the most recorded guitars of all time!
    Here we have three iterations of the iconic shape - from Collings, Eastman, and Bourgeois - with Jesse to play you through the differences and similarities. Enjoy!

    There's a lot of cork sniffery it seems when it comes to the boutiques, especially when they're up against more utilitarian makers like eastman and even martin! I'm gonna probably upset some folks in the comments but, here goes anyway. The realm of boutiques for the most part are out of 80% of most musicians pockets. Most of all the music we love was made on guitars that, with a some saving up and maybe a little help from yer folks, we're within reach. That eastman is in that world and it's a beauty. The other two are kinda of faberge eggs?! There, I've said it💥 Great comparison all the same.

      You are right, but boutiques its not for the customers that is only chasing the most bang for the buck. Its a different market. I´m happy to pay more to people that lives for their passion in life and are paid a fair salary.

    I have purchased , pre Jesse, two Collings guitars from Artisan and visited their old Franklin Store in person. Nice folks and you can't beat a Collings of any stripe. Wonderful instruments.

    They’re all killer but the Bourgeois is like a 24” gun on a battleship against a couple of 18” guns on a cruiser!

    The Bourgeois D-35 is the standout to me - not only sound which is warm and full but also the look!

    For recording, I use my Collings, for gigging I use my EASTMAN...unless I am playing a winery, then I switch that...yes the EASTMANs are that good.

    I just purchased the Eastman E10SSL/V (lefty), should arrive in a week or so.., the simple fact that it is even in a "showdown" with Collings and Bourgeois, tells me I bought the right guitar...

    based on this recording. blind test, I would say

    I wonder if the Bourgois also has an adi top?

    Just having purchased an Eastman E6SS-TC my initial impression is it looks like a J35 and sounds like a D18, best of both worlds, never been keen on Gibson sound really, nonetheless it's a bit of a cannon and a lot of sound to handle for an amateur player like me.

    I could live with all three to be honest, but that Bougeois is excellent.

    Eastmans have the biggest sound in the business (at least based on the 40-odd videos I've sampled). I'm leaning toward one for a jam instrument, at least in the D-18/D-28 copy realm. This Bourgeois sounds even bigger overall, though the low E isn't quote as boomy. Fantastic. The Collings is far quieter, at least in part due to the Sitka top, I guess?

    🔵 listened again with headphones ....
    Collings
    Bourgeois
    Eastman
    i own from Collings and Bourgeois , but not SSD , and Collings is generally preferential to me ; Bourgeois take a long long time to even begin to break in and loosen up a bit ❕
    🔵 have a Martin D-12 CS and both Larrivee SD-50 & SD-60 ; generally too big and boomy for me but the SD-50 is the best sounding of mine 🐸

    The eastman seems to have the most oomph. Especially in the low and hi end. That might be a subtle mic placement difference as well. They are all quite similar.

    • @ArtisanGuitars
      @ArtisanGuitars  3 роки тому

      They all are great sounding guitars! The mics will be pointing in a little different position just depending on Jesse moving, but overall they should be close to the same setup.

    the slopes are definitely better looking than the square shoulder dreads
    I've had a few 12-fret SSD which I prefer over the 14 fretters of this body size , since I play finger style only ;
    these all sound good , just depends what one is willing to pay

      Interesting comment, I gather you’ve never been to a bluegrass or old-tome gathering. I can testify that no two Martin d28s sound the same for D18s, Gibson AJs and 45s. It’s the nature of nature. They have a similar character but are all different and then there is the player’s ability to get the most out of their instrument

    Worth noting that the slope shoulders, with the short scale are gentler, more delicate instruments than dreadnaughts. That’s my experience with an Eastman e20ss and e6d. The ss in definitely on the spectrum towards my 000.

    I think we can all be guilty of guitar snobbery if you will? But close your eyes and listen and the Eastman may not sound quite as polished as the other two but imo it has that woody sound that the originals were known for.

    Funny, you expect warm, mellow and perhaps a bit muffled on a J45. The boutique guys are too crisp and super-defined.
    If I amnot going for a J45, I'd go for the Eastman.

    The Bourgeois is amazing.....I bet its at least 6k......so my accountant will raise her eyebrows at this one......the Eastmann looks and sounds cool but living in Indiana I can't play one......the Collings I already know is out of my reach so I have to stick with my Gibson J35 which is a nice guitar but I've never made peace with the action/playability on mine..........the only guitar I own that doesn't send my carpal tunnel into orbit is my 1997 Taylor........but the tone is not there for me.......oh well I can always just listen to music....
