I’ve been using the Sony-Hx300 camera for the last 3 weeks mostly on manual mode and it works great, it actually allows you to start using some professional camera settings, low light performance it’s not the best but with the correct settings you can definitely have great quality pictures. Great option to use it as a travel camera
Laura B. tabari For sunsets it stills performs damn good but at night scenes it may struggle a bit but the good is that you can use multi frame noise reduction where the camera will take 2-6 photos and stitch them together to get a noise free image (best to use on stationary subjects).
This video helped me a lot about buying a super-zoom camera.... Out of the 3 super-zoom cameras they have in store today the Sony HX300 impresses me more with the amount of zoom and megapixels.
This was the very first DSC I brought, it's descent & worth the money with ton of features that I recommend it to potential New owners, thnx on the review BTW
In this particular case, I bought for example the HX200V for travels and stuff like that. If you are an enthusiast photographer you will be very pleased with the camera, giving you options and tools to take the pictures you want. The low light shots aver great, the 10fps option is great also for speedy conditions and you have also the antiblur scene, wich I suppose is in the HX300 too. Oh, and the video quality of the camera is AMAZING. AVCHD 1080p 60p to be precise.
It depends what you want most out of your camera. If you prefer having a longer zoom, the HX300 would be the better choice. If you value image quality and low light performance, the a58 would be the way to go.
I have had my Sony DSC-HX300 for almost a year now and I absolutely love it. My only problem is that I still need to learn a lot about it and I don't know what else to do. It has been one of the best purchases I have ever made and I highly recommend it to others. If there is any way that you could maybe help me learn a little more about the camera that would be a big help. But overall I love it!!!!!
GREAT REVEW i just buy one and i am really fine with this sony. i need more info about how to well use to manual button... i am used with an nikon now i am discovering this baby! nice revew i love! thx dude
I just got this camera a couple weeks ago. It's my first real camera and I would love to see a tutorial on it. Would really help me out getting the most out of this camera. Great Review!!
I just bought a Powershot DSC HX300. I have 0 clue how to use it but your tutorials are awesome and I believe I will be taking some great pictures soon before going on to a more professional mirrorless. Great job...thank you!
Yes, it's worth it. I still use mine and it's a fantastic camera But it has huge limitations compared to what's new on the market. 1: fixed narrow lens 2: handheld stabilizer is trash 3: video traps out at 1080p 4: no external mic jack 5: The shutter is slow and only gets slower when you do a burst of pictures. I've learned to work around these issues and use it accordingly.
+A Lonely Meme Its a great camera for vlogging but it can be a bit difficult to see what you're filming if you're by yourself because there is no flip screen.
The reason is because the a57 has a larger sensor than the HX300 despite having more megapixels. Megapixels mainly count if you're printing large photos but sensor size plays a large part in image quality.
WIFI allows you to use an internet connection to transfer images, GPS allows you to tag your photos on a map of where you've been, RAW capture is digital negative that allows you to edit your photos in post without much loss in quality. DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex. Take out the Digital part and its that SLR acronym. The HX300 is still a cyber shot but just a different type. Its a superzoom camera. You might want to check out the WX300 since its slim or even the TX30.
There are two on the market which are highly rated and that is the HX300 and the SX50. I haven't used the SX50 extensively so I would probably suggest trying them both out at a camera store.
If I was on a budget, I would probably go for the HX200 but if you really need the 50x optical zoom and a slight increase in megapixels then the HX300 is worth saving just that bit more for.
You can get good footage and photos with the HX300 as well. Just have to shoot in good lighting conditions and once you know its limitations, it'll be easy to work around them.
It is now an older model, but yet I bought another one yesterday from an individual. It was not used much at all. I gave my last one to a good friend as a thank you for some help on a project. I also have an HX400v so I didn't really miss it. I bought the one today because I know that my HX400v is not going to last forever and if it breaks I want a backup in hand. I also have a Lumix FZ80 which has higher specifications like 4k, touchscreen, 60x zoom, etc. But the Sony just works better. It's like Toyota vs. Nissan. Or Toyota vs. Infinity even. Toyota wins all day every day.
You can add a lens adaptor and perhaps a lens hood but Sony don't make an accessory like that. You can probably make find some third party accessories for the camera though.
If you want good very good low light performance and image quality, I'd say go for the a57 and get a zoom lens to go with it. Perhaps the 18-250mm lens, although it will be large kit you'll have.
The NX1000 and the HX300 are two very different cameras as the NX1000 is an interchangeable lens camera with a larger sensor. Its supposed to give you better image and video quality than the HX300. However, they're sensors aren't that good at the moment compared to other manufacturers. A lot of the footage that you've seen depends on how the person uses their camera too! The HX300 can go up to 1200mm and with the lens you suggested with the NX1000, can go to 50-200mm. So very different there.
Well the a65 will definitely give you better image quality, however, you won't get that sort of zoom that is on the HX300. I'd trade image quality over zoom any day but its up to you which you prefer more.
I ordered this camera last week and just saw your video today. It's even nicer than I imagined; I can't wait until it arrives :-). I'm hoping to get some nice shots of the birds and critters I see on my walks and bike rides.
Unfortunately there is no accessory terminal like the NEX-5N on the HX50V and I doubt there would be one on the NEX-7N. The FDA-EV1MK is the viewfinder that can be used on the HX50 which is the same one as the RX1. As for the mic you're going to have to get a new one too.
Hey John, Can you do a review on how to change shutter speed, color change, iso, and such like that? Thanks I am thinking about getting this camera and would like to know how to use it.
Thanks John for telling me to go with this one as a first timer to photography, i feel confident with this one as it fits well in my large hands, and the hobby in general. How many different situations is it able to recognize at a time or scene modes is it able to use to shoot amazing pictures?
No worries and glad I could help. Its very capable of taking some amazing photos and as far as scene recognition goes the camera is able to change its settings for pretty much every occasion.
its selling for $378 on retail, im in the US. im making this camera a 24th birthday gift, it retails on ebay for lower, but not that much lower. i guess i turn to 3rd parties on this, its a truly excellent product, i enjoy taking photos with it, what other cameras aside from the HX300 offer a built in help guide on board them for the type of camera it is?
That's the point, the features that Sony is implementing in their cameras are awesome. For this kind of semi-professional cameras I don't have ANY doubt that Sony is winning by far, but people always seems to go for the sure thing, like Canon or Nikon. It sounds reasonable, but don't hesitate. It's not a Alpha DSLT, but it's works incredible well. The grip is AMAZING compared to both N and C, it weights nothing. And it's really EASY to use. You'll need 2 days to get used to the camera's menus.
I wanna get one for my channel . When you record yourself , is it focusing you , and what you have behind not? Because I'm looking for a camera like that , and not expensive and I found this one . Does it focus good? I need focus a lot for my videos . I have a Nikon CoolpixL320 ( 26x Zoom ) and it doesn't focus that good , and the quality ( hope I wrote fine ) is worse without zoom than this camera with 50x zoom on . I hope you can respond me .
Al Vogel i have a nikon coolpix to ( L320) and it doesn't focus when I'm recording a video and not even when I'm taking photos . I decided to buy Olympus PEN E-PL6 , i hope it' worth the money .
nice video as always - I think I am going to get the DSC-HX50V/B - was thinking of the HX300 as 50X was so attractive - but I like small - so the WX300 at 20x as an option - but now I think I found a happy medium with the HX50V/B - so really look forward to see your review as I have a feeling that you will get a hold of one before I get one - but specs look fine
Hey John, thanks for the review. I bought the DSC HX300 for my wife and think she will love it. The last fine camera I bought was in the early '70's when it was common practice to add a UV filter to protect the lens and keep the blue in the sky from washing out. I see the lens has a thread for a filter but nowhere in the owner's manual or on Sony's website do I see what diameter the lens is. Do you know? Is a UV filter still necessary or valuable? Thanks, Nick Doneff, Evergreen CO
Good review, and your commentary was very clear and understandable. When showing video quality, I think the camera should be steady, preferably on a tripod, not moved around. Only very amateur videographers wave their cameras around, and it makes it impossible to appreciate the true capabilities of the camera.
Hi John, thank you for the great review! In your opinion, which camera would be a better choice for a beginner: HX300 or A3000? Thank you, you're the best!
Hi John, how this camera performs in low light and in condition of fast moving object or camera is shaking while taking picture? will it give steady picture or blurred?
Hi! Which camera you recommend? This (HX300) or it's predecessor, the HX200? The price difference btw these 2 models is ~30% in advantage of the HX200. Does this new model worth it's (extra) money? (I have an old Sony - DSC-H9, and i was very pleased of it, this would be an upgrade, which one you recommend?). Thanks, Ati.
And the 10fps and 2fps impresses me more since none of the other super-zoom cameras have that except for DSLR's. So this is a camera of my need at a good enough price.
Hi!! John I am very excited today I got my sony dsc-hx300 today, thank you very much for your help in this video. But I have a question I didn't find the tutorial menu video of this camera. thanks.
Hello I'm starting in this world of photography. After researching and reading some books about the subject, I realized that a bridge would be best for now. Do you think this machine is good for my first choice? What about the quality / price? Thank you.
what is the max frames per second that you can set it to in video recording because i am wondering if it would be good enough for showing videos in slow motion smoothly. another question, how much did you pay for it because at my Best Buy it is $499
after MUCH research and searching i finally made the choice to buy this camera today :D i fell in love with it the moment i saw it at the store .. i had some photographer friends try to steer me to the canon sx50 hs instead of this one but i just really liked all the added features of this camera over that one (manual zoom collar - flip lcd - scrolling panorama - still shots from video) ... i am however looking to learn all the features - will you be posting a tutorial video??
Hi John, Thanks for this review. What I found missing is the review of Manual exposure (M mode) control. Please do a quick review and let us know if that control is similar to that on a DSRL. Thanks in advance. T
Hello, can you help me?! right now im undecided on what camera to buy, this Sony DSC-HX300 or the Pentax XG- 1. which one do you think that will give best experience for a begginer? Thanks!
I want to buy my first good quality camera for filming videos (I have a old and compact digital camera right now). Which one would you recommend, the H300 or the Hx300? It is mainly for filming videos.
this is great help im getting mine tomarrow cant wait
Did you take it?
I’ve been using the Sony-Hx300 camera for the last 3 weeks mostly on manual mode and it works great, it actually allows you to start using some professional camera settings, low light performance it’s not the best but with the correct settings you can definitely have great quality pictures. Laura B. tabari For sunsets it stills performs damn good but at night scenes it may struggle a bit but the good is that you can use multi frame noise reduction where the camera will take 2-6 photos and stitch them together to get a noise free image (best to use on stationary subjects).

I have the camera too.😊 And im very happy with this cam👍 It's a good cam for beginners😉
MLTech can I use it for UA-cam video making
I have a question, can you use rechargeable batteries ? Im not a fan of batteries. Hope to hear back from you on what you think of the camera
What is the definition of a beginner and beginners camera?
This was the very first DSC I brought, it's descent & worth the money with ton of features that I recommend it to potential New owners, thnx on the review BTW

hi there!
Where is the link on how to use the camera?
+Amber Baker I want to know also.

Can we blur background
billybooks how good is it?
Why they said isnt good for videos?
I just bought a Powershot DSC HX300. I have 0 clue how to use it but your tutorials are awesome and I believe I will be taking some great pictures soon before going on to a more professional mirrorless. Great job...thank you!
How its going
Is it worth it in 2024 xD ?
Bump
I use it as a casual camera and its great
I'll give you a hot tip. Still great but make sure you don't buy a Japanese one because there is no way to change it to english.
Yes, it's worth it. I still use mine and it's a fantastic camera But it has huge limitations compared to what's new on the market.

Yes you can control the focus manually. There is a switch on the side of the lens which allows you to change from manual focus to manually zooming in.
would anybody recommend this camera for a vlogger
+A Lonely Meme Its a great camera for vlogging but it can be a bit difficult to see what you're filming if you're by yourself because there is no flip screen.
Place it in front of a mirror to see what your doing
+John Sison hey. 3.23 you said hes max settings or something like that. can you tell me them?
canon t6i
Thanks for the feedback. The presentation of my videos are still a work in progress.
5:49 lol std
lol 😂
The reason is because the a57 has a larger sensor than the HX300 despite having more megapixels. Megapixels mainly count if you're printing large photos but sensor size plays a large part in image quality.
My h300 does not look like this..
Your model is slightly different. The H300 is the entry level model to the HX300 which is the higher end version.
Despite the increase in megapixels, I found the HX300 to be just as good in lowlight, if not slightly better.
I just got this camera today for my birthday, and I can't wait to use it :)
I just got the DSC-HX300 and it's great the video Quality is great and everything is very customizable. Love it best camera ever :)
It is now an older model, but yet I bought another one yesterday from an individual. It was not used much at all.

It's like Toyota vs. Nissan. Or Toyota vs. Infinity even. Toyota wins all day every day.
I bought it and it's amazing. I'm not a professional photographer so this camera suits me just fine.
I got this for Xmas and the quality is AMAZING! I took it to the Rose Parade and the pictures look gorgeous.
I'm glad you're loving your camera =.D
I haven't tried the SX50 so I can't give you a proper comment on them. I suggest you try them both out at a camera store.
Thank you so much for this review!!!!
what camera are you using to make this review?
If you purchase this from the US which looks like you are, the max is 60p which is good for slow motion. In Australia its $100 more.
I haven't used the HS50 so I can't give you a proper opinion on it but I suggest trying them both out at a store.
Lovely review.. Thanks for sharing.. However, just one question is this camera good for someone who just likes to keep it at the automatic settings..
I try not to make the videos too long and didn't find the need to include it but thanks for the feedback.
The NX1000 and the HX300 are two very different cameras as the NX1000 is an interchangeable lens camera with a larger sensor. Its supposed to give you better image and video quality than the HX300. I'd definitely recommend this for entry or amateur photographers or even the a37 or a58.
Another question John which camera do u choose, which is good for photography and video, which has a super auto focus and zoom?
That's a tough cause I haven't used all of those cameras. I suggest trying them all out at a camera store and decide which one to get.
Hey John,
Can you do a review on how to change shutter speed, color change, iso, and such like that? Thanks I am thinking about getting this camera and would like to know how to use it.
I haven't used the Fujifilm so I can't give you a proper opinion on that camera. I suggest trying them both out at a store.
That's wonderful, i made a very informed choice.
what is the lowest possible price i can find the HX300 for as the successor has started online sales?
Steven Jordan Not too sure to be honest. I guess it depends in the country you're in.
its selling for $378 on retail, im in the US.
im making this camera a 24th birthday gift, it retails on ebay for lower, but not that much lower.
i guess i turn to 3rd parties on this, its a truly excellent product, i enjoy taking photos with it, what other cameras aside from the HX300 offer a built in help guide on board them for the type of camera it is?
Steven Jordan I'm not sure about other brands but as far as I know all the new Sony cameras have built in help guides.
Hi John, Compare to HX50V which one for you is better in terms of picture quality and other features? Thanks in advance!
Excellent and Crisp review. Can you suggest me which camera is the best in the market with 50 X zoom?
Best to try both of them in a store as I haven't had extensive use with the SX50.
nice review john ... well i have a question can we uploud the photos directly on facebook please answer me .. thank you
I just ordered it today so looking forward to take pics
Depends on what you want more. HX300 for a long zoom and a57 for better image quality.
I have all those cameras with me at the moment. Just need time to review them but if you have any questions in the meantime, let me know.
Thanks John for the feedback..
+LifeIsAUnicorn18 I had a CoolpixL840 and sent it back because it took forever to focus and probably deleted a thousand pics and 5 came out nice.
Thanks,
Nick Doneff,
Evergreen CO
Hi Nick,
It takes 55mm filters and I would recommend getting one just in case the worse were to happen.
Great you tube site and John does a great job with his reviews.
Thank you :)
Good review, and your commentary was very clear and understandable. When showing video quality, I think the camera should be steady, preferably on a tripod, not moved around. Only very amateur videographers wave their cameras around, and it makes it impossible to appreciate the true capabilities of the camera.
Is this good for making music videos?
hey wheres the tutorial link in description on how to work hx300?
just got one need some help john. New to cameras!
Hi John,
Is there another camera in this price point that you would recommend over the Sony DSC-HX300?
how to pull footage from the dsc-hx300 to my computer?
I haven't tried the P520. Probably best to try them both out in a store.
Would this camera be good for filming makeup videos for youtube? Also can you attach a microphone to it if you would like better sound quality?
You just need to press the viewfinder/lcd button on the top of the camera, just below the power button.
And the 10fps and 2fps impresses me more since none of the other super-zoom cameras have that except for DSLR's. So this is a camera of my need at a good enough price.
John, you are awesome. I loved your tutorial and I subscribed to your channel. Greetings from Egypt :D
Great video, thinking of getting this camera or the nikon p520, which one do you think i should buy?
Thank you
I use the a99 to film most of my videos, before that I used the a77 but you can't really go wrong if you're using an NEX-5R or Slt-a57
Hey John, I was planning on getting this as my first camera just for basic photos and occasions. What do you think?
Exposure bracketing is available in the HX300 at 0.3, 0.7 and 1.0 EV apart
Hi!! John
I am very excited today I got my sony dsc-hx300 today, thank you very much for your help in this video. But I have a question I didn't find the tutorial menu video of this camera. thanks.
Yeah I think its a great camera for basic photos, if you don't mind the bulk.
Yeah its definitely good if you intend to keep the camera on automated settings.
Hi John great review, I have a HX 300 and need to get more out of it. I can't see the link to the tutorial, can you reissue please? Thanks Andy
John, I have a question I am hoping you will answer. Which camera has the best quality video at 50x zoom-the Canon SX50 or the Sony HX300?
The Sony HX300 definitely has the better video quality.
Hello
I'm starting in this world of photography. After researching and reading some books about the subject, I realized that a bridge would be best for now. Do you think this machine is good for my first choice? What about the quality / price?
Thank you.
what is the max frames per second that you can set it to in video recording because i am wondering if it would be good enough for showing videos in slow motion smoothly. another question, how much did you pay for it because at my Best Buy it is $499
Hi John, I just picked up this camera and was looking forward to your tutorial video. Any word on when that will out?
Is it possible to monitor the live camera output via HDMI? (I don't mean just viewing pictures or videos that have already been recorded).
after MUCH research and searching i finally made the choice to buy this camera today :D i fell in love with it the moment i saw it at the store .. i had some photographer friends try to steer me to the canon sx50 hs instead of this one but i just really liked all the added features of this camera over that one (manual zoom collar - flip lcd - scrolling panorama - still shots from video) ... i am however looking to learn all the features - will you be posting a tutorial video??
This is awesome! I am gonna buy one of these cameras today. I think the tilting lcd screen is good and looks professional.
It's not a bad camera for the price. If you want wifi with it you could even go with the HX400.
Great review. I just bought the camera.
Hi John,
Thanks for this review. What I found missing is the review of Manual exposure (M mode) control. Please do a quick review and let us know if that control is similar to that on a DSRL.
Thanks in advance.

Hello, can you help me?! right now im undecided on what camera to buy, this Sony DSC-HX300 or the Pentax XG- 1. which one do you think that will give best experience for a begginer? Thanks!
Wow thank you! That's a big compliment!
I want to buy my first good quality camera for filming videos (I have a old and compact digital camera right now). Which one would you recommend, the H300 or the Hx300? It is mainly for filming videos.
