A really great guy, who is worried more about the young military members than himself. Total respect for you, Mr. Metcalf. I think part of the suicide problem these days among military members is the op tempo and number of deployments. A person can only take so much of that, before they break down in one way or another.
I'm a 25th Infantry vet from the 70's. He talks about veterans suicides. What our current troops are facing is way different situation than in previous wars. My personal opinion is we need to withdraw our troops. Especially in Afghanistan.
I'm a 25th Infantry Division vet, 1956 to 1959. I missed it all but I thank you for your service. I had a friend, Jim Patton. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea. Lloyd Metcalf, U.S. Marine Corps Rifleman. Served from 1967 to ???? Here's a little summary of Lloyd Metcalf's great story: 1- Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego (MCRD) 2- Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton--> 2 weeks of Jungle Warfare Training (mock POW camp, mock villages, booby traps)/ Advanced Infantry Training? 3- Da Nang (coastal city, central)--> there he was assigned to 3° Batallion, 9° Marines, 3° Marines Division, at Dong Ha (coastal city, about 150 km north of Da Nang) 4- Dong Ha--> there he was assigned to “The Rockpile”. 5- “The Rockpile” Fire Base (also known as Elliot Combat Base, important United States Army and Marine Corps observation post and artillery base from 1966 to 1969). Located about 25km west of Dong Ha, fairly close to the DMZ. *At 50:25 Lloyd tells an amazing story involving Marine sniper legend, Carlos Hathcock. *Other interesting/funny anecdotes/stories: (20:20) NVA elephant convoy, (54:53) man-eating tiger, (59:54) Floyd Patterson's nephew.
Austin Panziera decent summary, but you kind of missed the most important part- 1:08:15 when he goes into the suicide rate among veterans and the ongoing lack of training/care/really any kind of assistance with these troops coming back from overseas to re-integrate into society, be it job training, counseling, whatever they need. As much as these people do to protect our country we need to do everything we can to protect them when they are back home.

8 percent dislike is from the disrespectfulness of this man being interrupted by excessive ads. 3 or 6 or 10 but this is insane. The rule should be one per ten minutes or 15 min.
I remember the mock POW camp ate breakfast at 04:30 didn’t eat all day went to the camp sundown the gave us a small cup of white rice and a small piece of carrot the we made the escape and had to head for the camp fire a few miles away. They had the platoon of recon that would patrol as NVA regulars. They were to capture us send us back to the POW camp to start all over again. There was a 4 man’s guard agains a dozen recon NVA and we ran into 2 groups of 4 so now it was 12 of us so we all decided to capture the dozen recon and sent them to the POW camp we took there rifles and there arm strip and they said you can’t do this oh yes we can so when the 6 BI showed they tried to plead the case. So we got to the finish line we turned in there rifles and ended up with 2 days off base extra. Fun
You must have freaked people out when they first saw you. It's a giant. Memories, have to laugh at so many things said here. The shot line was hilarious. We're in our underwear all day walking around doing a normal physical. Guys that thought they were bad asses but passed out in the line. Don't move, you could tell who flinched by the blood. Your welcome was far worse than mine. We landed and were marched to the clinic. Apparently a few guys figured what the heck and visited some lovely young Entertainment Engineers. We arrived with crabs which explained the itching. The Beretta is a piece of junk. I usually just had 1 bullet in the chamber, figuring that if it got to the point we're we had to use a 9mm we were done. Thanks for your service and for your son's as well. God Bless
Very sad about the elephants :( And sounds like the cooks had the same risk level as radio operators, damn! Holy crap, burning the shitters :D :D :D Glad to see this gentleman talk about training veterans... training employees and given them respect is what is missing in the culture of many so-called businesses.
Every American should view this and listen to the raw honesty and courage of this man, and the others; all heroic in their own way. It is 1/24/22---we had better figure out a realistic way to handle Putin and Ukraine. May God bless all of them.
Point of clarification... when he was discussing training on the M-14 he meant to say it was chambered in 7.62x51 (the NATO cartridge). The 7.62x54 he mentioned is a rimmed Russian cartridge.
Yea caught that too.. with the 7.62 x 54 But this Gentle Giant does stumble a tiny bit with getting some words out. I give you the deepest of my respect Sir. You are a treasure to America.. Wow and 25 years as a fire fighter.. tell us what we can do to help these vets with PTSD.. there are many willing to help.
2 or 4 or 10 but 16 commercials??? Its almost an insult to the vets since they don’t get the money and makes people not watch their stories. I have seen all the ones without commercials and respect these veterans for what they did!!!
6' 8 " who would be bothering you ? Daddy always said " it's not the size of the dog in the fight , rather the size of fight in the dog ".........Charlie was a TOUGH DOG ! Thx Marine !
LOL...Ham and Limas were my favorite C Rat because it was a bigger can with more food that you'd get with the other meats. At 135 pounds and carrying a radio in a rifle company I needed every calorie I could get. Most guys agreed with Lloyd about them so I never had a problem trading for H&Ls.
Another fantastic interview. Funny, Lloyd mentions a squad mate named George Washington Carver, then discusses the use of peanut butter for makeshift candles. George Washington Carver is often credited for inventing peanut butter.
I have always maintained our troops were under armed with the 5.56 round. Michigan bans that round for deer hunting. More likely to wound than kill. That is in the rifle zone.
PTSD is an injury to the fight/flight/freeze instinct due to over-stimulation. The injury and the symptoms are automatic. The treatment was not known until the 1980's and is still difficult to obtain. Childhood neglect and childhood stress make adults more likely to be injured in this way when they are stressed later in life, such as in war. The sufferer of PTSD is often stigmatised as "letting it affect them" or "dwelling on the past" or having "victim mentality". Blamed, basically. This kind of blame or persecution can lead to reclusiveness, alcoholism, violent outbursts and suicide.
Thanks for your service Big Lloyd ! It’s shameful how you were treated in this country after you came back from Vietnam. Fun
Great guy, great interview. 50 years out and hasn't learned we didn't belong there?
God bless you sir.
He, knows His bullet's
wiser than his leaders.
Holy crap, burning the shitters :D :D :D
Glad to see this gentleman talk about training veterans... training employees and given them respect is what is missing in the culture of many so-called businesses.
Every American should view this and listen to the raw honesty and courage of this man, and the others; all heroic in their own way. It is 1/24/22---we had better figure out a realistic way to handle Putin and Ukraine. May God bless all of them.
Ty to let me hear what you went through I ty for your courage
Point of clarification... when he was discussing training on the M-14 he meant to say it was chambered in 7.62x51 (the NATO cartridge). The 7.62x54 he mentioned is a rimmed Russian cartridge.
@Rusty Shackleford There y'go Rusty...you learned something.
Lloyd would be terrifying in Krazee-Klown makeup.
Much respect.
Very smart guy, very proud a true American
We got our shot in the cheek, then sat Indian style and rocked from side to side to massage the vaccine in. We called it the Peanut Butter shot.
at 4:19 he was that he and his dad would have "gone to fisty cuffs" if he ever talked to him like that i laughed for 45 minuetes after hearing this
2 or 4 or 10 but 16 commercials???
Its almost an insult to the vets since they don’t get the money and makes people not watch their stories. I have seen all the ones without commercials and respect these veterans for what they did!!!
You can skip them
This man is a badass!
Thank you
Semper Fidelis, Mr. Metcalf.
Great story teller.
Another fantastic interview.
Funny, Lloyd mentions a squad mate named George Washington Carver, then discusses the use of peanut butter for makeshift candles. George Washington Carver is often credited for inventing peanut butter.
God bless you
He mentioned the C-141, i used to be an electrician on those in the air force. Welcome home marine, semper fi!
interviewer: what do you do on your downtime to relax? war vet: shoot elephants and eat canned peaches lol
