  • The young engineer Hans Castorp, the protagonist of "The Magic Mountain", travels from Hamburg to Davos.
What connections exist between the detailed railway journey described in the literary text, the development of the lung spa resort of Davos and the development of the Swiss railway infrastructure? How do social and technical developments interact? And what role did the then Polytechnic, today's ETH Zurich, play historically? Dr Thomas Eichenberger, Historian at the
Professorship for Cartography at ETH Zurich, answers these questions.
