The beauty of Queen was that they had four different types of people on the band and all of them participated in making the songs and bringing in ideas for good songs... This resulted in Queen never having a distinct sound or a specific style... These boys started the whole thrash metal sound too... And had these grease fifties Elvis sounds too. They were extremely versatile and nothing was off limits.
This. Rockabilly. Queen also did "Man on the Prowl", a totally ignored equally fun song, also rockabilly, to my ear even better than Crazy Little Thing but that's just my ear. Very Eddie Cochranesque. Where is the tragic Eddie Cochran? All over UA-cam, if one looks and so worth one's time, pretty big catalogue for a short-lived young guy with big talent. And Stray Cats, yes yes yes 👍🏻.
Get used to Queen being constantly " different" they have done songs spanning across several types of genres, but you always know it's them when you hear it because they are very distinct in their sound overall. This was Freddie's tribute to Elvis. I'm sure that if Freddie came back he'd be very vocal about his opinions on our modern technologically advanced music, then get his bros back together for one song and send us straight back to the 70s and 80s. He'd also be instrumental in shaping how this new generation of children relates to music and possibly inspire a whole new age of classic music and rock. There's actually a band out there today doing exactly that. 4 guys started a band a few years ago immortalizing Led Zepplins classic sound right down to the vocal patterns of one Robert Plant, they have gained a lot of mixed attention for this and scattered opinions; but they took their influences and ran with it, becoming a modern day 70s rock band that sounds great and pretty on the nose to what you'd typically get from rock bands of this era ( band name: Greta Van Fleet, take that as a request if you want but I was bringing them up to explain my point, I definitely think they are up your ally though based on past reactions😉). Regardless of that though, I think we'd all love to have the real rock legends back. If Freddie came back I'd throw away my all savings if it meant getting to meet him just once ( sure, I'd be broke and homeless afterward but.. at least I met Freddie 😂).
Although I’m a huge fan of Led Zepp (they’re my all time favourite band), I don’t really like Greta Van Fleet. The first time I heard them I was like “wow, that’s impressive, they sound exactly like Led Zepp)… but that’s actually the problem. They sound like a copycat Led Zepp, but without the X factor that made LZ so good. It’s a pale imitation, is what I’m saying. I’d like them a lot more if they took that inspiration, but made it their own- more like Wolfmother, which was absolutely heavily inspired by 70s rock, but who made their own music still, rather than just being a copy of a specific band.
I see Freddie being open minded to use modern technology and then make something ahead of their time or beautiful. Queens sound in flash Gordon and highlander still sounds modern but what still makes them great is they can go old school like crazy Lil thing.
agree with your comment - and yeah - would be good to see a reaction to Greta Van Fleet - they really are good -- they throw you right back to 1969-1972 - but even better...
To be honest, I'm a sound engineer most musicians would sell their granny for the chance to record on the older gear, a lot of the plug ins used by digital workstations are digital replicas of older classic equipment trying to emulate the analogue sound. The difference you can hear is possibly more down to the expectations they were mastered to - the average persons listening devices have become so much more improved than they were in the 70's and 80's, so at the time they were mastered to sound ok on the worst possible scenario - mono radio and tv. Another factor could be the added compression automatically added by digital music platforms to try to ensure a consistency in all tracks the site. This track and many others were produced by Reinhold Mack at Musicland Studios, Munich, Germany, a producer who also worked with Electric Light Orchestra - Listen to either Queen or E.L.O. on vinyl through good speakers at the right volume... its something special! (Then listen to Pink Floyd - The Wall from start to finish... it's a concept album and a journey never really meant to be taken as individual songs). Loving both your channels btw 👏
Great post, many thanks for this. The craftsmanship is gone. There are indie artists still honoring craftsmanship but in the mainstream industry, it's all cheap and easy and essentially copycat, it's aural fraud, aural deception, nothing is real, anybody can do it and that's the prevailing attitude. And man, it sounds it. Sound quality, performance passion, all across the board there's a serious cultural loss. To get anywhere used to call for reasonably broad exposure to music genres and eras, talent, drive, some charisma, ability to connect, many many things. Given the depth of craftsmanship, passion, and dedication Freddie Mercury had, it's hard to picture him working comfortably within the low-low standards of now. I wish I could credit this but can't recall who said it - that most music today is exactly like Kleenex, utterly disposable, unmemorable, one paper-thin thing after another, throwaway sound. There's real truth in that.
To be honest I only understood about 2/3 of what you're saying (not a musical tech type person....but I did live through vinyl, 8-track, cassette etc) Today's artists might sell their granny but how many of today's artists would even be a thing without all the electronics available today? Meaning you needed real talent back then.
I agree with all of this, and while modern musicians crave the older sound, I think a musician from back then could get more of the modern sound. They knew how to get all they could with what they had, instead of trying to sound like something it's not, they'd figure out how they could make it the best at what it was. A key difference in modern musicians. Look what synth did to the early '80s, it basically created a new genre.
@@swcoder oh absolutely, you have to sculpt the sound on both older and newer equipment, although modern equipment now comes with a whole load of presets whereas producers of the past had to know how every piece of equipment works and how it would affect the recording
Good point. Queen used to write NO SINTESIZERS on their album sleeves during the 1970s and later they started using them. So yes, if Freddie was alive today he would definitely tried all new gadgets mixing them with his talent and vision.
Freddie was THE greatest vocalist and frontman to THE greatest ROCK BAND of ALL TIME. PERIOD. Until you've seen a QUEEN Concert with Freddie Mercury... you just don't know the POWER they all had over us fans! I attended FIVE of their concerts and between the amazingly poetic lyrics in each song, their sound & lights being second to none, their costumes being simply jaw-dropping AND Freddie prowling the Stage in his flamboyant majesty and allowing each and every one of us Fans to sing along with him... note for note... those incredibly sound-deafening arenas were nothing less than a PURELY MAGICAL MUSICAL & VISUAL HEAVEN for that entire time that both Freddie and The Boys had all our goosebumps poppin' from the back of our necks to the length of our legs the entire evening!!! There simply will never be another Freddie Mercury!!! GOD SAVE QUEEN WITH BRIAN MAY & ROGER TAYLOR!!!
As far as "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"! Freddie wrote this song in a matter of minutes in his bathtub! Yet, it is by far one of his and Queen's more "catchy" Pop/Rockabilly songs ever recorded!! I have been a Fan of Queen since their first Album in the early 70's. Nobody here in The States had even heard of them! In fact, it took a few more albums before the "trendy" Americans would ever finally catch on to Queen's amazing sound. Too bad, that both Freddie and The Boys were WAY ahead of their time for the lagging American music trends at the time. I remember hearing "Crazy" on the radio for the first time... which was released FAR in advance of, what would be later announced as, their forthcoming New Release Album, "The Game"! I'm like... WHAT?!?!?!? They are releasing a lost Elvis Presley song from his archives?!??? THAT is really strange!!! Of course, my Mom was a huge Elvis fan... which caused me to be a big fan of his on the side at the time, but... still?!?? I kept listening to the song and it was SO DANG GOOD and CATCHY, I couldn't stop listening... and THEN IT HIT ME! Brian's guitar solo!!!!!! WOW! THIS WASN'T ELVIS AT ALL!!!!! THIS WAS THAT NEW QUEEN SONG I HAD HEARD WAS SECRETLY GOING TO HIT THE AIRWAYS SOON!!!!! I had only belonged to ONE Rock Band Membership Club... and it was QUEEN'S International Fan Club back then!!! As soon as I knew it was Queen, I began searching and calling to see how I could own the single or the upcoming album!!!! Just like Queen's music AND why I love their music so much, though! EVERY one of their songs is so different. They never got stuck in a rut of sounding the same... even on the same Album! QUEEN: THE GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME. PERIOD.
👑Just can't go wrong with Queen👑 You had to have actual talent back in the day. There wasn't anything to hide that you suck when they were doing live music then. 🤷♀️🤘
Your reactions to the various Queen songs give me joy. Every song that they recorded was unique. You two are so precious and fun to watch. I enjoy your input and takes on their songs. Thanks you guys :)
Lol he literally said “so how do we even react??” As if the person recommending the song was dumb for requesting it since it’s soooo on the surface 😂 and brad STILL can find something worthy of an eye roll within the shallowest of songs… you react to the sound! The simple of message of crazy love, to the bop! The emotional blocking is getting tiresome. Still watching for Lex
Brad & Lex, you should check out Queen's performance at Live Aid. It's about 20 minutes long, but it's considered by many to be the greatest live performance of all time. Freddie & Queen stole the show that day.
Such a fun song, tribute to Elvis. I love the bass and guitar in this and Freddie singing and his flamboyant dancing too. Queen experimented with so much different types of music.
This is the perfect time to break into Dwight Yoakam. He did a cover of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. If you don’t know Dwight Yoakam, you are missing a major nuance of country music.
Dwight's fantastic. He's a treasure. A high-intellect "country" Bakersfield-sound dude. He remade Buck Owens' "Close up the Honky Tonks" brilliantly. Amongst an at this point substantial body of fine, fine work. Anyone who hasn't checked out Dwight Yoakam, give him a shot. He's several cuts above the "country" genre box he's been stuffed into.
This song is from the same album as Another One Bites the Dust. Both went to #1. Check out the studio version of the song Dragon Attack. Don’t Try Suicide is another great one, too. Queen’s versatility is on full display on this album.
This was Queen's first #1 hit in the US. About the "old artist in the modern day" thing: Freddie was always someone who was up to date with music, always open to the newest artists & trends, going with the time. And Queen always went with the times, which was one of the reasons for them staying successful. Queen in the 90s sounded as modern & contemporary as Queen in the 70s. Another artist who was always in his time or even more often ahead of his time was David Bowie. He was a true visionary (in the late 90s he predicted today's internet) who was from the 60s to his last album before his death 2016 has always on the forefront of new music. He would be a perfect example of your idea of an old artist who's up to date with the music of today.
Elvis-y vibes - yes!! The vocal style, the echo of Elvis' early recordings, the love song with a bit of attitude, the "cool" factor... it's all there. Freddie soaked it all up and made a brand new Elvis song. I love it. BTW, I was around when Elvis became famous the first time, in the 1950s. Freddie captured the best of the feelings Elvis created during that time and gave them back to us, to everyone.
I truly love this song it was a number one hit in the US and at least one other place and charted really well in many other countries. Freddie's tribute to Elvis that he wrote in 10 minutes in the bath tub or so the story goes. This video is so cool, the costumes the set, just fantastic. It is easy to see that the boys got into character for this one, they all look like they stepped out of the movie Grease. Thank you for this reaction
That's an interesting question, if the music would sound the same. I think it would all depend on the artist. With Queen, they didn't shy away from trying new things, so I think they'd adapt well.
@@nanner3200 - given Queen's talent, I don't blame them for talking a little smack, especially for those two specific things. But that is different than refusing to use new technology
One thing that I think is great about Elton John's or Queen's music is that they didn't make "gay love songs" they made love songs And anyone who understands how to sing a cover knows that you can interchange words to fit your personal taste. But "gay love songs" aren't written in mind to be sung by just anyone who wants to sing it. So I'm glad that the music they gave us, especially with regard to love songs, were made for 'everyone'.
Thanks for reacting to Queen and Freddie! This is a tribute to Elvis. Story goes Freddie wrote it in 10 min in the bath. He was in the bath at a hotel and got inspired and called out to his roady to bring him his guitar.
I believe it had the Grease vibe, Grease was released in 1978, this song was released in 1979. Freddie wrote it in the bath in 10 minutes. It was written with Elvis in mind as an ode to Elvis who died that year. Lisa Marie Presley was so impressed she gave Freddie one of Elvis' scarves!...
Lex, you are a delight! I admire and appreciate your openness. I saw Queen in New Orleans a few years back with Adam Lambert singing lead. Freddy was a singular talent who cannot be replaced, but Adam shares Freddy's flare for the theatrical which adds a lot to the showmanship. And the music of Queen is so well constructed that it's epic even when someone other than Freddy is singing lead.
Love you two's reactions. Speaking to what Lex said at the end. Check out Gary Numan, Are Friends Electric, or Cars, or M E. Then play his newer stuff like Ruin. He was kind of forget about and broke and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails helped him revamped his sound because he influenced so many later artists.
Queen...I was 15 when live aid happened over here in the UK. And I knew I was watching something special. They are unlike anything..Fred and queen are just themselves. If anything sounds like them they are just biting their vibe.. What other band did complete soundtrack to two major movies that have both become cult classic. And one..well highlander has a epic soundtrack. The other is flash Gordon one and that needs no selling..... If you two have never heard flash by queen, oh my god...😎 I guarantee minds will be blown.... Much luv guys...🤘🤘
I love that Lex got the "Grease" vibes from this. I do too. Every time I listen to it, I can't help but think about Travolta and "Greased Lightning". Also, I like her idea about bringing back past artists... but I would go further back. It would be amazing to have composers like Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Chopin, Tchaikovski, or anyone else on that list hear not only what modern music sounds like, but what contemporary (to us) artists have done with their original works. That would be so cool in my mind.
Someone may have said this already (I looked and didn't see it) but Freddie wrote this song in 10 minutes. He was in the tub in his Munich hotel and got inspired. Shouted for his guitar and wrote the whole song. It's a tribute to/inspired by Elvis.
Freddie wrote it in around Ten minutes in his bath and then went into the studio too record it, I really can't see if Freddie was around now using any auto tuning etc, Dr Brian May, Roger Taylor and others before and probably until the 90's would stick with actual talent over anything else, just look at Sir Tom Jones, Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Elton John, Sir Rod Stewart, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Ringo Starr, the list goes on and on, they move with the times but prefer how they naturally sound on vinyl and live
When I was kid, I never listen to Queen because I don't want people to think I am funny like Freddie Mercury. Later in life I discover all the great songs Queen make and I think it really does not matter he like the same sex, it is just great music, not just about his sexuality. Nowadays I think some people dwell too much on that, there is much more to a person beside what he like to do in bedroom.
I joined a cover band out of bordem back in the mid 90s....didn't last because I didn't know until I showed up that all the song they did was 50's and early 60's stuff, so this song was thrown into the mix to keep me interested lol ......everytime I hear this song I think of that, this was about as rockin as they got.
This was the first of two number 1 U.S. hits from the album “The Game”. The second number one from this album was “Another One Bites The Dust”. Great album
Awesome reaction, you guys! You guys need to react to Queen at live at Live Aid, it has been voted as the best live television performance of all time. And you guys need to check out hard rocking Queen song, such as I Want It All, Innuendo, Hammer To Fall or Princes Of The Universe.
In 1979, everything was modern, comparatively. We weren't riding around in horse drawn buggies. There were planes and trains and automobiles. It wasn't the dark ages. LOL!!
Ready Freddie! Freddie wrote a song when he knew the end was coming from Aids its called The Show Must Go On, you might want to check it out the ironic thing is it was the last song on the last album Freddie was on!
You guys NEED to do some Elvis. He's not called the King of Rock and Roll for nothing. And I'll say it again, Lex has the soul of a poet. Don't ever change.
Today is the anniversary of Cliff Burton's death (original bass player of Metallica) . You should totally check out the song anesthesia/ pulling teeth. Live
Also maybe check out"Dragon Attack" from this same album. Each member of the band has a solo on the song. It's a depth track but well worth a listen. John Deacon's bassline is killer. 🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
Great song. Lex once said that blues rock was his favorite genre of music ... Please react to Gary Moore - Don't Believe A Word (Live) Sheffield, or any Gary Moore live song, you are going to love it.
Brad is right..Legendary artists wants to do music the old fashion way.. they dont want it to be in digital and they dont want it to sound very clean..
I was born in '61 and I *hate* the sound of autotune, so yeah you're right. This song was a deliberate throwback to the style of the '50s which is why it made you think of Elvis.
To piggy back off Lex’s questions: if yall could build your own fantasy rock band, from anyone dead or alive, who would be in it? Ex: my rough draft thought is: Freddy Mercury-vocals. Stevie Ray Vaughn-guitar. David Gilmore- Guitar. Flea-bass guitar. Danny Carey-Drums.
This song was released in 1979. Freddie wrote it as a tribute to Elvis. The genre is rockabilly, an early form of 1950's rock and roll.
The beauty of Queen was that they had four different types of people on the band and all of them participated in making the songs and bringing in ideas for good songs... Perfectly worded, my friend! Queen will always be the GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME. PERIOD.
It’s done in the 1950s, Rockabilly style. You should check out “The Stray Cats” for more of this awesome genre. :)
I don’t think I’ve seen any stray cats reactions. That’s a good idea!

Guys, you need to see the live version done at Live Aid - the crowd were amazing
Do I see a movie reaction in your future?!? GREASE reaction!! Please!! Just to see Brad's face. Haha.
A sign of a great band with staying power, is that every song doesn't sound the same.
Try listening to Freddie singing Barcelona with Montserrat Caballe, an opera singer. It’s wonderful. 😀
Hey guys.. love the Channel .. Mr. Brad.. your open minded and easy going and Mrs. Lex you are ethereal !
1:33 *would be really interesting, what Brad thinks Elvis sounded like.*
Very nice Elvis tribute! Elvis himself would be proud!!
That's an interesting question, if the music would sound the same. I think it would all depend on the artist. With Queen, they didn't shy away from trying new things, so I think they'd adapt well.
true
Hmmm. Not so much. Even today Brian and Rodger talk a bit of smack about lip syncing and auto tune.
@@nanner3200 - given Queen's talent, I don't blame them for talking a little smack, especially for those two specific things. But that is different than refusing to use new technology
One thing that I think is great about Elton John's or Queen's music is that they didn't make "gay love songs" they made love songs
And anyone who understands how to sing a cover knows that you can interchange words to fit your personal taste.
But "gay love songs" aren't written in mind to be sung by just anyone who wants to sing it.
So I'm glad that the music they gave us, especially with regard to love songs, were made for 'everyone'.
Love Queen and this song 🎵
Lex make Brad watch " Grease ".
Lmao....my eldest daughter used to watch it on repeat as a kid...😩
Freddie is so missed he was one of a kind. I love Queen.
Thanks for reacting to Queen and Freddie! This is a tribute to Elvis. Story goes Freddie wrote it in 10 min in the bath. He was in the bath at a hotel and got inspired and called out to his roady to bring him his guitar.
I think I’m in love with Lex. 😍😍😍
To really appreciate this song you need to watch the live aid version, it is awesome
'just a bop" Lex you're awesome
Lex out here describing the plot to Bill and Teds excellent adventure...
QUEEN QUEEN QUEEN QUEEN QUEEN QUEEN QUEEN QUEEN QUEEN THE BEST.
Legend has it that Freddie wrote this song in 15 minutes
Queen: the show must go on. Please. Amazing
If you two have never heard flash by queen, oh my god...😎
I guarantee minds will be blown....
Much luv guys...🤘🤘
It was written as a tribute to Elvis, and the video was done in a 50's style. Freddie wrote it in about 10 minutes while he was in the bath tub.
Omg please make Brad react to GREASED LIGHTNING
Took place in the 50s ..But the songs from 1978
They have a cool song on this album that was not a hit on the radio called "Dragon Attack". Nice & heavy.
yea... dragon attack is awesome
Also, what could a composer like Mozart do with what all is available these days for sounds and instruments
Lex is consistently on point, a real music empath. Lose the stiff! ;-)
One of the VERY few songs Brian May doesn’t play the Red Special he and his father built! I love the Telecaster sound he gets here!
You guys need to find a concert to go to!
NOW it' is time for QUEEN's Stone Cold Crazy!!!
Someone may have said this already (I looked and didn't see it) but Freddie wrote this song in 10 minutes. He was in the tub in his Munich hotel and got inspired. Shouted for his guitar and wrote the whole song. It's a tribute to/inspired by Elvis.
This sound is what you call ROCK-A-BILLY. "The Stray Cats" is a group that has this sound too. Check out their song "Rock This Town".
Total 50s vibe! Rockabilly retro riff.
@tom thumb Same here. That's just how older brothers were back then. They bullied in most loving way.
Queen could literally do anything!
"Bring the artists back ???" That sounds like "The Monkey's Paw" kind of thinking, and you don't wanna go anywhere NEAR that 😜🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 !!!
"Looks like she takin a dump" lol im dead.
LOL!!
You should listen to their rock'n'roll medley at Wembley 86. They didn't play Queen songs, but old hits like Tutti Frutti, it's great and funny.
No two Queen songs are alike. Pure theater ‼️
You should listen to DRAGON ATTACK from the SAME album!!! trust me!!..im from Hawaii..i know!! LOL!!!
Queen is soo damn good!
Ready Freddie! Freddie wrote a song when he knew the end was coming from Aids its called The Show Must Go On, you might want to check it out the ironic thing is it was the last song on the last album Freddie was on!
Queen has so many hit song's and they are so different from one another but Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest front man and singer RIP Freddie
Live
Lex continues to impress with her insight!
Have you done Queen "Somebody to Love" live 1981 Montreal. Best live performance ever!!
Everyone was shocked when Fred came out lol. Love Queen.
He never really came out "officially".
Also maybe check out"Dragon Attack" from this same album. Each member of the band has a solo on the song. It's a depth track but well worth a listen. John Deacon's bassline is killer. 🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
Love the bass!
Autotune makes people who can't really sing sound good to people who don't really know what good singing sounds like.
Love this song and Dwight Yokum does an awesome country version!
To piggy back off Lex’s questions: if yall could build your own fantasy rock band, from anyone dead or alive, who would be in it? Ex: my rough draft thought is: Freddy Mercury-vocals. Stevie Ray Vaughn-guitar. David Gilmore- Guitar. Flea-bass guitar. Danny Carey-Drums.
It feels more like Roy Orbison like. Cool as the other side of the pillow. Thanks guys
I was born in 67, and you are right, I dislike the autotune sound. It sounds fake.
Their song (and video) Who Wants To Live Forever is really powerful
Lex introduces the notion of Zombie Freddie Mercury
