S1 - Ep 405 - Herbertsdale - A Remnant From the Anglo-Boer War!

- Our visit to Herbertsdale marked the start of our 22nd trip and this filled us with anticipation for new discoveries. It was our first time exploring this quaint town, and as we took a slow drive down its main road, we quickly realised its small size. However, our spirits were lifted when we stumbled upon the bustling church community fervently preparing for their annual October festival - the ladies hard at work inside, tending to the meat and other food items, while the men skilfully tended to the braai outside. Further along our journey, we encountered an aged church building, a relic dating back to 1872. As we continued, locals informed us about a historic fort hidden along a gravel road, a remnant from the Anglo-Boer War, which became the next intriguing destination on our adventure. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #herbertsdale

❤ Hi Curtis Sonia and Dusty, it's great to be in back seat again, loving the open road and the little towns, fantastic ❤
The three of us enjoy your company while we explore the little and not-so-little towns. 🚙😁
Just received notice now that the bridge on the N2 at Botrivier has been completed and now open...what a great job done! Thanx for showing us Herbertsdale.
That is fantastic news, I was wondering whether they'll be done in time for the festive season. Thanks for the info! 👍🏻🛣️
Yay, we're on the road again, it's like having my own little family 😊, very nostalgic town . Thanks again & we're in my favourite colour Kwid 🚙 .
So you have a favourite colour Kwiddie! 🚙😁 There is a colour or two in the range which we haven't gotten yet, I don't think the rental companies have them in their fleets.
Good day, I watched your story just now and want to tell you that I grew up over the Cloetes Pass where you travelled on a farm called Bitou. The first farm after the pass is called Grootplaas owen by the Beukes family still to this day.The main church was built 2 years after I was born. Yes in my day the valley just before the pass was called the Langtow Vally and yes it is famous for its Witbliz. The Witzbliz was from peaces made by the man called Piet Britz. That Valley in those days were mainly fruit like peaches and lots of oranges. Where you saw the block house, there are one on each bank of the river. I enjoyed your tour.
Regards Dennis Smalberger
Thank you for sharing your memories of the area with us, it was very interesting to read. We had no idea that there was another blockhouse close by, we had a hard time finding the one! 🚙😁
Gee you folk sure get around !!! ....leka leka & thank you so much
So many places to explore, thank you for coming along! 🚙😁
What nice little town. Look so quiet. The churches are very nice and huge for a town of that size. The vegetation is stunnning. Thank you for taking us there. Till the next trip seat booked
Whenever we see big churches in small towns, we imagine how big the congregation must've been back in the day for such a big church to be built. Luckily they remain for us to admire. 🚙💒
Hi you two! Thank you for this trip in and around Herbertsdale, I'm glad you found the TRADICI after the trying travel on the congested national road! The roads among the green and flower fields were beautiful, especially the gravel road with the rocky mountains around. And the snails and tortoises! The sun breaking through the clouds for a minute to shine on that mountain just as you were looking at it was something special! I think the sight of the fort from far away after searching for it, is even more fascinating than having been been directed how to drive right up to it! The town is really quiet and peaceful with its greenery along the streets and obvious old buildings, whatever they were for. I really appreciate your walk through the big church with "Eternal Father Strong to Save" as background music. We sang it every Sunday on 'church parade' in the Navy, where we referred to it by the last line: "For those in peril on the sea."
I'm eagerly waiting for the next trip.
Keep safe!
I also love that hymn and I'm so happy to hear that it has special meaning for you! 💒⚓ The gravel road we took out of Herbertsdale in search of the fort revealed incredible natural beauty, it was a special experience with a fort cherry right on top! 🚙⛰🌳
Genade mense dit is ongelooflik intresant, het nie eers geweet daar bestaan so n plekkie nie.Al daai ou geboue is so so pragtig.❤
We only learnt about Herbertsdale recently ourselves and what a great place to visit it was! We loved the old buildings too. Thank you for coming along! 🚙😁
Lovely video ! Thank you for sharing ! 😊❤
I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed this one, thank you! 🚙🤩
Great stuff !
Thank you! 🚙👌🏻
On the road again..........🎼🎵🎶 yipppeee. 🙃🙏❤
We were super excited ourselves to hit the road again! 🚙😁
This is a new one on me. That traffic jam looks like a nightmare! The town looks pretty and I love the church. That snail with all its stripes has to be a racing snail! The old pastorie looks like a castle. The architecture of yesteryear is fascinating. I would love to sit and sketch some of those buildings. The tiny church looks like a little chapel, for funerals maybe? Oh the tortoise is adorable! Really enjoyed the gravel road, so pretty.
The lack of windows in the little building made us think a church is less of a possibility. I later thought that it may have been used as a morgue, especially being so close to the cemetery. That is pure speculation though. 🤷🏻♂️💒🏛️
Hi guys sent a message but it doesn't seem to have registered so hopefully this one does fantastic video the greenery and the moonshine was the cherry on top thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one
I'm not sure why that sometimes happens, but luckily I can see this one! 🤷🏻♂️ We also had a chuckle about the moonshine. 😁 It was such a fabulous place to visit and the gravel road with the fynbos vegetation was fantastic to see. 🚙🌿
We just love Herbertsdale, but especially the gravel road and all the fynbos. Where would the road take you if you didn't turn around? I was actually disappointed. It felt like there should be fairies too.
The gravel road leads to Van Wyksdorp which we explored and overnighted at in Episode 389. 🚙🙂
A long drive for the first day

Freemasonry Lodge .
I can't recall seeing one in town. 🤷🏻♂️
