  • One of Park City's crown jewel trails, Mid Mountain is an IMBA rated Epic ride that can serve up an all day adventure by itself. But it's also a killer connector trail that serves up a ton of options along with its own "long bomb" descents. Oh yeah, and the dirt quality feels like someone just went over it with a freakin vacuum.

Did you get to visit in 2020? It was a great year, did 34 van shuttles to the top, we all stayed safe and smart, of course a huge jump in riders, hikers but everyone was thrilled to have an outlet. Latest news out of Park City is an e mtn bike pass to better control e bikes on the right trails-a good thing. (I have a Giant Trance X 29 E Plus 2021 and it rocks these trails like you can't believe!)

Nope. I had planned a long Park City to Moab and back trip that was nixed by Covid. Instead, I did two weeks in southern Utah for St George, Cedar City and Bryce area stuff. Would love to bring my new 990w Range VLT to Park City and do Wasatch laps.

These are inspiring videos, thanks for making the effort. I ride here, for newbies it would help if you named: the lifts as you pass under, some of the ski runs. It's a big place, hard to get lost but lots of options.

I can totally see how people who've first visited this resort in the winter would be oriented by chairlifts and ski runs. If I were riding at Snowbird or Jackson Hole, that's how I would understand where I was because I've spent most of my time in those places in the winter. Conversely, if your first visit to this area is for MTB (as it was for me), lifts and ski runs aren't your reference points because you don't really use them to get around. Which is why they didn't come to mind for me. They were pretty much invisible as I focused on trailheads and intersections. But I think its a good idea because there are going to be a ton of people who know this area mostly from winter visits.

@@outofshapemountainbikersne4243 I ski PCMR and in the summer it's easy to get turned around, not to mention astonishing to see a gully 40' deep that is stuffed with snow in the winter. Think of first responders when you're hurt or need to call in. First step is location, did you pass under a lift? It's' on your summer map. Utah ski resorts are massive, but don't always have cell coverage.
Now I realize you're yodeling along Mid Mtn taking in the incredible view and 99% of the time all goes well. If you do have to self evacuate, bushwhacking vs walking the walk of shame trail home can be no fun. A ten minute Sharpie pre ride session of 'ok, I'm starting at this base lift, oh then Payday/Bonanza/etc can be a small piece of mind. You ride safe, and you're videos are keepers, hope to see you on the Crest/Pinecone/this year. Noted you have a video on Pinecone. Slyfox Moonwillow of Big Rack Shuttle has done that run in (he says) 24 mins. The rest of us mortals savor it. Same snow pack numbers as 2019, it won't dry out up top til June 20th at the earliest.

@@hypersailor Oh yeah. I definitely get it. Had I ever snowboarded there before MTBing it, I'd have called those things out without even thinking about it.

@@outofshapemountainbikersne4243 Thanks for CMG and Mojave videos, vicariously we're right there with you! As to crowds, there are about 8-10k bikers on the Facebook Mtn Bike Group in Utah. There are nights coming down Parleys Canyon after a big rainstorm closes down the trails all at once, where every third car out of hundreds are bikers! Hope to see you at Deer Valley for Taco Tuesdays, 4 to 8pm, $25, both mountains, $3 tacos. You're not out of shape!

@@hypersailor haha! Oh, yeah I am. The logo was heavily inspired by the producer. :) I actually don't live locally in Utah, although I wish so often that I did, but Park City and Moab have become regular yearly destinations for the past four years.

Is there much potential to get lost doing this ride?

There are many intersecting trails as this is really a very long traversing connector trail to all the vertical trails on the mountain. Most of the intersections are well signed and it is never long before you pop of the trees on a ski slope or are within view of the town. So, I think getting truly lost would be quite difficult.

Sadly, it's probably not in the cards for me this year. If it happens, it will be in the Fall. Would love to get my e-bike out there and gobble some miles.

What would you recommend for first time to park city UT area for a beginner

    • @outofshapemountainbikersne4243

I would start with a shuttle down the WOW trail. A nice, relatively easy flow trail that will introduce you to the dirt and rhythms of the local terrain. After that, there's a ton of options but my favorites are 1) any section of mid-mountain but especially the section above, 2) ride the flow descents off Park City chair, 3) Flying Dog trail. After spending some time on one or more of those trail systems, you'll really have the area dialed and may be ready for something bigger. That would be The Wasatch Crest and any of the descent options off that ridge line. If you don't feel up to the full Wasatch Crest loop or the traditional shuttle version of that ride, then a nice easy version is to go Wasatch Crest to Pinecone as your descent back into Park City. That version will let you get you some of the crest ride with a flowy intermediate descent. You may have to walk up Puke Hill, but the technical difficulty of the crest is actually pretty low.
Lastly, if you are going there for something like a week-ish style vacation, I would strongly recommend signing up for a lesson at Deer Valley early in the week. One half-day lesson will be enough to unlock the skills you need for nearly every trail in the area, which will dramatically impact the quality of your visit.
