One of the union officers in Missouri got a Chevy Volt in 2010, or there abouts. I don't know how long he kept it but he drove it for a year and a half and only used one tank of gas. It was a hybrid but he used it exclusively around town and recharged it when he went home every day. He was very impressed with everything about it. My brother in law bought one of the little Honda Insights about a year after they came out. When he sold it in 2003 it had 185,000 miles and the battery pack had to be replaced at 165,000 miles but Honda only charged $1500 for it. He consistantly got above 50 MPG on it and there was no way to charge it except with the engine. When they make an electric car that will go 300 miles and can be recharged in 30 minutes the market for gas powered cars will drop to 25% of the market.

Such a great video! I just ordered my Mini SE last night in the same beautiful British Racing Green! Now I just have to be patient 6-8 months… 💚 I can hardly wait!
80 cents for a charge up is insane. I had been a combustion engine fan until I saw the honda E (which isn't available in the states) which brought me to the Mini electric. They are so affordable and I don't travel across the country so mileage isn't an issue. Loved the honesty!
My guess on the drive selector is that its operation is descended from automatics, where Park and Reverse are the forward (or up on the steering column originally) positions and Drive is back (or down). Mine is in transit from the port to arrive sometime this week! Exciting!
Yes, so annoying copying ideas from automatic cars instead of thinking outside the box and going to push lever forward for forward and back for reverse. Mind you, having driven an automatic car for 100k miles never had a situation of accidently pulling gearstick the wrong way...
I agree with everything you've said and now it's 2024. The proximity sensors are way to sensitive for most garages. For me the level 1 charger was just fine.
Great video, thanks! My wife has the same commute distance, and gets to use the HOV lanes on the 404. We missed the free charger deal and looking at an EVDuty charger. Now the wait until Christmas for the delivery.
@@YNGSTUD78 yes I understand that, it does appear though to be rather ironic or juxtaposed in the buying of an EV in order to save the planet by ditching fossil fuel vehicles only to drive them around a city that has inbuilt transport systems making the concept of the city car as outdated as the very gasoline engines they’re supposed to be replacing, (ignoring the fact that the electricity has to be produced by the fossil fuels we’re supposed to be casting into obscurity.)
Thanks for the explanation, in a couple of months I will buy one. My main concerns was a the charger and this video help me a lot to know what to do. Regards.
I had a car that beeped every second it was in reverse. The sound could only be heard inside the car, so seemed pointless. Fortunately it was an easy fix. There was a small speaker on the back of the gauge cluster. Removing it made the beeping stop.
I suspect you had a Prius. The beeping (in the Prius) is to remind the driver the car is in reverse as the "gear selector" is more like a manual stick shifter. In a stick shift, the "up" position is typically first gear, whereas this position is reverse for the Prius. For folks who have never driven a stick, the beeping makes no sense to them.

Very nice review, thank you. You didn't cover range, which would be important to me. However, I did see on the charging meter inside the car that it said the range was 169km at 99% charge. That doesn't seem like nearly enough range for me. Should be at least double that to be useful. I hope future versions of the mini get a better range.
@@ScottRods I live in Sydney Australia. If I want to visit my parents about 85km away then I can't make a round trip on one charge. @@simongross3122 One day when I'm rich and famous I'd like to get an electric truck, like the f150 Lightning or chevy silverado E. They have tons of range, but also tons of cost, lol.
I think the solution here would be to have a "drop in" second battery as a range booster (for an extra fee). For longer trips, you could drop it in the hatch and plug it in. When not needed, leave it in the garage on a special shelf built into the charger. This way, you'd not be carrying the extra weight every trip. Ultimately, the drop in concept could be standardized and instead of stopping at a gas station for a petrol fill up, you could stop by for a booster battery swap.
I think it is important to have the 2 markets and have cars with less range like the mini. The advantage is that the car is much lighter, which is more fun and cheaper to run. On the issues I've got with mine (Europe 2021): the driver seat is not electric and because both me and my wife constantly swap, she pump the seat up and forward and me the opposite. Great review. I don't know how it is on the e-mini, but on my Kira Niro EV I can turn off the beeping of the rear camera when I want to, and thank goodness because it's as sensitive as yours is!
Interesting. So I've been hearing that batteries in the Chevy Bolt are crapping out after 5 years in northern climates because of using the elecric heaters, and that its cheaper to scrap it and buy a new car rather than buy a new battery. BUT if "fuel" cost is next to nothing then that has to figure in to the total cost of running a car for that time. Might work out even if you have to buy a new car every 5 years.
On any other EV yes, but not with the Mini. They took away that complexity by only allowing 80 percent charge, although it shows 100 when "fully" charged. Pretty smart. They also recommend always charging it, so as you say, don't let it run down too low.
This is my first video I see of your channel and I was no going to watching the video in full but when I heard your Glaswegian accent I was paying attention until the end. 😂
I know this is a few weeks old but thanks for the video.. :) I.. I'm still a dork and I'm super slow making a big purchase like this but I'll try and do a test drive soon. Thanks again!
I see the comments on the regen braking concerning drivers following. Don't understand if you're paying attention and maintaining a safe distance no reason to hit vehicle in front. Can't be multitasking when driving.
EVs are OK if you have a home where a charging station can be installed however if you own a condo or rent an apartment many places still don't have charging stations and this is in Los Angeles. This means you have to make time to go to a public charging station and pay much more to charge your EV.
Best thing we ever did. If you want to chat in detail, send me an email or friend me on Facebook. I'm like a "Move To Canada" salesman.... or person, or whatever.
Drive and Reverse are ok the way they are. They replicate the motion of your body. Putting it in Drive and moving, will make your body go back and Reverse, the opposite. This is actually praised as being the gold standard is high performance cars...well those have shift paddles as well
I'd recommend not charging to 100% unless you need the range. Keep the battery between 30% and 80% day to day and you'll find the battery will will last significantly longer before it stops holding a charge. Sadly lithium ion batteries degrade when they're constantly at 100% Happy trails!
Thanks Mike, but apparently BMW have thought about that on the Mini. When the charge says 100 percent, it's not actually 100 percent, it's lower, so we don't have that degradation issue. Pretty sneaky, but if it works, it works.
Charging history, click on a session then total cost and you can then edit to add kwh rates for the address the charging was at. It will use that for future sessions at this address.
Very informative video thank you. I just picked up my MINI about a month ago and I just had a question about what mode your wife and son have it on when driving? Is it mid, sport, green or green+? I usually have mine on green+ because I drive in city. The only time I had it on sport was when I was taking it home from the dealership that was a treat. 😊
I think they both drive it in Mid, or whatever mode comes on when you jump in and go. Personally I'm a "Sport" kinda guy, but after the police incident, I try not to drive it much, lol.
Hi mate! Thank you for the very informative video! Looking at buying one of these as a second car in Finland. How was your experience with the mini in winter in Ontario? Did you see much of a change in estimated distance?
We calculated the range drop to be about 25% in winter. But we are are talking deep snow and minus 25 degrees for a few months. Totally acceptable figures for us.
@@ScottRods Any items after fuse should be rated same or higher. EV charging is continuous high power for a long time. Think you said charger max was 32amp, so I would drop fuse size. just curious. does this charger allow u to set how many percentage to charge up to. to me. the problem is not slow charging using regular outlet. but not able to program top up percentage or stop charging remotely.
With the lower range on the SE, Mini designed the battery to be charged to 100% as often as needed. So telling it to only charge to 80% is not needed, if that is one of the things you were referring to. The built in buffer is around 8% at the top and 4% at the bottom. The US warranty is 30% degradation over 8 years / 100,000 miles.
How long did it take you to receive the car from the time you guys placed an order at the dealership? Such a pretty car, watching these videos makes me all the more excited for mine to finally arrive! :)
I was the first 2022 SE delivered where I live. I ordered 1/6/21 and it took 101 days to my driveway. However, the popularity of the SE appears to be going up, so delivery times are also going up.
Thanks nice ev .I don't think we will be going over 32amp single phase on AC.This is fine for me as I don't do over 100 miles a day. Could have 200 mile per day but will be paying higher rate electricity on dual tarrif
Question Dave, does your Mini SE have working rear fog lights ? I have a 2021 SE the lamps are there but no switch to turn them on, I was wondering if the 2022 Canadian spec has them and do they work ?, cheers.
The front are built into the headlight and come on automatically with the lights however the rear are manual and the button is to the side of the headlight switches
Yes, you're right. I'm very used to having a nice driveway and garage here in Canada. In Scotland I had a small single driveway and crappy wee sectional garage, but most folk don't have a driveway, never mind a garage. So you will be more reliant on charging away from home.
Charging the mini might be very cheap, creating a cheap overall car cost. But i am wondering what the cost might be when the car's battery needs to be changed after some time?
Battery is BMW and has an 8 year warranty. Battery technology is changing quickly, so if we still have the car by that time, we might be changing it to a non lithium battery, which seems to be the future of batteries. We're not worried.
Hi Scott... just heard that a new Full Electric 2024 MCS will be out soon, and will have a range of 400km... isnt that great or what? Its also gonna have a new display filled with lots of gimmicks :-)@@ScottRods
The problem with regen braking is the guy behind you doesn't know you're slowing down or coming to a stop. I got rearended because of it at a stop light. I had that problem with the honda insight. Touching the brake pedal just enough to light the brake lights solved the problem.
@clockwatcher the Volvos also light up the brake lights when regen is going. I think most manufacturers have figured it out by now, but you are correct - they sure didn’t in the beginning!
Wow, in Canada 10kw is only $0.70 and in California SCE, it is over $7.00 bringing your net MPGe to around 20. No real saving any money driving an EV in California, only more fun.
Re: you don't like the gear shift forward for reverse etc , Aĺl automatic gear shift are forward for reverse ALL , so it could be considered dangerous to make this the only car with it the other way around. Just sayin
Not everyone in the planet is used to automatic cars. 99 percent of The UK and most of Europe learns and drives a manual car, where 1st gear is forward. Just sayin.
Forward to go forward and back to go backward is the most logical and safest way to do it. The arrival of the elecrric car would have been a perfect time to change the old method. The fact that they haven't changed it is proof that it will never be changed.
In cool to hot weather (not cold), you can expect to average somewhere around 128 miles (206 km) on a full battery. In cold weather that will go down a bit. My best trip in 6 months of ownership is 145 miles. (Mostly mountainous back roads on that trip)
Excellent review. Please make another one after 10 years when the battery has degenerated to the point where it needs charging to go 50 miles and electricity has been taxed like gas is now.

I know this is a few weeks old but thanks for the video.. :) I.. I'm still a dork and I'm super slow making a big purchase like this but I'll try and do a test drive soon. Thanks again!
Hey, nothing wrong with taking your time and doing your research. New electric cars are coming onto the market every day.
@@ScottRods so true the market is changing so fast 😶
I see the comments on the regen braking concerning drivers following. Don't understand if you're paying attention and maintaining a safe distance no reason to hit vehicle in front. Can't be multitasking when driving.
Mini thought of that. The brakes come on when you use regen.
EVs are OK if you have a home where a charging station can be installed however if you own a condo or rent an apartment many places still don't have charging stations and this is in Los Angeles.
This means you have to make time to go to a public charging station and pay much more to charge your EV.
Rotary?
How was it moving across the pond? Live in England but would love to hear your experience
This is actually praised as being the gold standard is high performance cars...well those have shift paddles as well
Yeah, we’re used to it now.
I'd recommend not charging to 100% unless you need the range. Keep the battery between 30% and 80% day to day and you'll find the battery will will last significantly longer before it stops holding a charge. Sadly lithium ion batteries degrade when they're constantly at 100%
Happy trails!
Thanks Mike, but apparently BMW have thought about that on the Mini. When the charge says 100 percent, it's not actually 100 percent, it's lower, so we don't have that degradation issue. Pretty sneaky, but if it works, it works.
@@ScottRods very sneaky indeed!
are you on 120v in canada? so at 32A you get 3.8kW? So about 7-8 hours for a full charge i guess.
Sounds about right.
At 32 amps, you would be using a 240 volt circuit, so about 7 kW.
How does your app connect with the power company to show cost of charging? Mine only shows power consumption in a charging session.
It's my wife's app, so I'll need to ask her. But basically you input the cost per KWH, for peak/mid peak/and off peak.
@@ScottRods 🤣Thank you, that helps. I'm going to try it on Mid my next ride out... maybe even sport 😁
@@ScottRods ahh okay! Thank you, mate. That’s certainly manageable! All the best for the future and thank you for responding so quickly!
I would hard wire get rid of plug & socket. 16amp commercial socket is rated 6amp continuous run.
I installed a 50 amp charger with a 60 amp fuse on a 220 line.
@@ScottRods Any items after fuse should be rated same or higher. EV charging is continuous high power for a long time. Think you said charger max was 32amp, so I would drop fuse size. Check manufacturer recommended fuse size for charger. UK electrician our industrial socket get down rated around 60% continuous use. If outlet gets warm each use connections will get worse with time.
just curious. does this charger allow u to set how many percentage to charge up to. to me. the problem is not slow charging using regular outlet. but not able to program top up percentage or stop charging remotely.
No, this charger box is just an unnecessary show piece. It has no function other than on and off. Charging times etc are controlled with an app.
@@minise-focus oh. Is that right. Yeah. I just think that i need to treat it like my iPhobe
Why not get the i3 so you have superior range?
Because it's not a Mini, lol
@@ScottRods one could argue...... Neither is the mini sE 😁. Had 2 i3s and really enjoyed them, Hope you enjoy yours
How long did it take you to receive the car from the time you guys placed an order at the dealership? I ordered the same 2022 SE mini in green back in July and it still hasn't even started being built yet! Such a pretty car, watching these videos makes me all the more excited for mine to finally arrive! :)
mine was ordered middle of June and I got october 1st. so it took about 3.5 months. delivery was quicker too because i'm in the UK where they're made.
We bought him off the lot. We were very lucky to get pretty exactly what I’d have specced anyway without the wait.
I was the first 2022 SE delivered where I live. I ordered 1/6/21 and it took 101 days to my driveway. However, the popularity of the SE appears to be going up, so delivery times are also going up.
Oof, here I am late to the game. Ordered mine a few weeks ago. Guess I've gotta prepare for some waiting.
Thanks nice ev .I don't think we will be going over 32amp single phase on AC.This is fine for me as I don't do over 100 miles a day. Could have 200 mile per day but will be paying higher rate electricity on dual tarrif
We are getting close to a year of ownership. Never had to use a public charger.
Does anyone have a view on a service plan. 🤔
No routine maintenance such as spark plugs, oil change (engine, transmission),
But how much is the vehicle cost?
Our Mini was similar in price to a new Mini JCW.
I want one but I’m extremely concerned about the range. I work JUST under 50 miles (80km) away from my job and I worry that this wouldn’t make it.
Everyone who has done a range test has shown the 110 miles is greatly under estimating the range. We get about 150 on average.
Have a dumb question Dave if every one charges at off peak doesn't that become peak LOL LOL
Don't tell the people in charge of the electric grid, lol.
Can you turn off the alien noise it makes?
Maybe with a Bimmercode software program, but there's no switch if that's what you mean.
Ease of charging wouldn’t be the same story in the Uk, I’ve seen some vids and it’s a right pain in the bum!
Yes, you're right. I'm very used to having a nice driveway and garage here in Canada. In Scotland I had a small single driveway and crappy wee sectional garage, but most folk don't have a driveway, never mind a garage.
So you will be more reliant on charging away from home.
i love the Scottish...
I thought you were in Scotland 🥺
I was..... 9 years ago, lol.
The problem with regen braking is the guy behind you doesn't know you're slowing down or coming to a stop.
I got rearended because of it at a stop light.
I had that problem with the honda insight. Touching the brake pedal just enough to light the brake lights solved the problem.
The manufacturers could put in an inertia switch to trigger the brake light
@@craighough5886 or program the ECU to turn on the brake lights when in regen mode
The mini brake lights come on when you regen. I'll do a video on it.
@@ScottRods That's good news!
The fact that they haven't changed it is proof that it will never be changed.
so how far can you go?
We've not really put it to the test yet. But we didn't buy it for road trips, I have the truck for that.....until we get an electric truck hehehe
Just
Matrix lights in uk even better
What are Matrix lights?
Think it beeps cause it sees that daft flag , hahahahaha och eye the noo
