Awesome work mate! I started square filing a few days ago as I had a big pine job on. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade but also a logger as well . But I'm pretty good with my angles and stuff so got the hang of it really quick and man they do cut well! Also feels smoother too. Keep up the awesome work mate
Truth Professor Harvey! Gotta rotate, come from the bottom up and by feel. For my square chisel I use the 6 sided “triangle” file. Always a great day when we get a new Ironhorse video. And today we got two! Thanks for all of you contributions to the community! And that’s the way gas and oil should be carried in the woods. Lol, maybe I’m just cheap but that’s how I do it to. That 044 sounds great.

Love the videos as always. You are a wealth of knowledge. Maybe a good way to explain the direction of your filing is... sharpening into the chains working edge, puts the sharp cutting edge of the file directly into the edge you are thing to make sharp. You never get the burr and you beat your file to death once you get a sharp edge on that chain. Now you end up with (2) sharp edges opposing each other. Anyway, keep kickin ass, and it's people like you that need to be an inspiration to our younger generation.
You are so right Ironhorse, always file up with the tooth not down. The file teeth grab the leading edge of the tooth, wrecking the file and dulling the tooth. You are a fine teacher. From Petrolia, Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦
I priced a simington and they are over 1600$. I bought a dozen 3 square files for 160$ Going to see if I can learn square fileing. Lot of good tips here.
Harv, I might have mentioned this before....we went to dropping our round file a little just like in your video. Not everybody does that, but just like you said, since the top plate cutting edge drops some toward the inside we needed to do that just to not get blunt toward the short side. We would get even a little curve in the top plate edge - called it a "little moon". The old 72LP chain came round ground the same way, if you tried to fit a file against the factory grind, you had to drop it some just to match up. Thanks for what you do!!

@ Mark Dudley, neither myself or cutting buddies have used any square filed chains, most dealers Ive talked to dont know much, they just replace parts and charge a fortune. Maybe forestry guys would be the ones to talk to.
Been filing for decades. Been doing it wrong all along. Just learned the 3, 45 degree angles on the chisel bit. Works great! Thanks for the confirmation 💪

I ported a salvaged 044 with the help of Harvey and Tinman’s videos and she freaking rips. Sounds great with an openend dual port on it too! Harvey’s videos are long and sometimes he rambles but it’s the good kind. Tidbits and thoughts from a man who has been doing this a long time.
That was a real lesson right there Harvey. I have been cutting wood almost my whole life. I am almost 70 years old and have always had a woodstove for heat. I have always sharpened my saw but never like you just sharpened that saw. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.

We got hit pretty hard up here in Woodgate with snow from December up until two weeks ago, ten miles from Boonville. I know you know where that is, lol! Had the Husqvarna snowblower out thirteen times in three months. I'll be happy to put the snowblower away next month and get the rake, leafblower and chainsaws out of shed again! I love this video! I am shutting down the evaporator tonight and watching this. We were slammed today sap wise (great problem to have). I have taught myself the square filing too. Before I started selling and maintaining chains, Buckin gave me some solid advice in semi-chisel chain too. Round filing is sort of look at it from the side and “See the C”. That square filing for me kinda came naturally, because of nature of my day job lol, precision grinding at angles is sort of if what I do... I am thinking we will send Buckin some .063 and let him mess with his grinder on it....
Weird because everyone says square is harder... I guess I’m a weirdo...I do use a flat file to covert that chain on first file, it saves those chisel files. Run your 45 up cut under the tooth, with flat file, then you just sort of clean it up with that chisel file. I can’t explain it as good as you Harvey!
When i chisel file i do it similar than you Harvey, but mostly full chisel square ground chain does not work for me because the wood is never clean enough. So I round file either full chisel or semi chisel chain. Especially when you are making stumps really low for tractor and trailer to drive around doing thinning loggin I run semi chisel. I only run full chisel square ground chain if i have firewood in a pile that is very clean and it cuts really great.

I been filling for a long time myself and I have learned that I like round better than square... cutting really hard woods like hickory I feel like round is faster in harder woods and definitely stays sharp longer in the harder woods and I have had a few problems with square ground chain when I get into knots in really hard woods it starts to knock off the point on square ground
Ok Iron Horse, I live in the high desert. Sand gets in the Pinion and Juniper bark and dulls me out very quickly. Will "your" chisle file or round file last longer? Everything wears out fast- frnt and rear sprockets, bars and of course, chain. Currently I use an Oregob round grinder. It's fast. My chain lasts me maybe 30 minutes before I change chain. I don't wait till I get dull. As soon as it's not sharp, I change it out. I bring 2 to 3 saws and have at least 8 chain per saw. I can cut for two day with that. I have to ask IRONHORSE, what is the best sharpening for hickory wood that is frozen in the wintertime ??? My saw has a 404 chain that is semi-chisel oregon old chain from the 70s. Roller nose remington bar. Do you think a full chisel skip chain is the way to go that you are sharpening ???
Problem with square ground, especially if it’s a full house version, is it removes a lot of material. I use compressed air, a brass brush and an industrial magnet to get the filings out every other toof’
Question Harvey. Is there a secret to keeping an edge when cutting hickory? A young logger up the road gave me a 20 yard dump load of hickory and I am spending as much time filing as I am cutting. This has got to be the most dense and hardest wood I have ever cut.

Tried this with a flat file i was total rubbish at it, maybe a triangular file like that. My eyes have some days they want to work better than others, vitamin a helps my eyes work better.

Harv: question: Buckin once said he puts the pressure downward. I hope I’m not misquoting him. But he does a lot of square ground as you know. I always use an Oregon beveled chisel and have sworn off round files. Is this just a technique difference borne out of experience. BTW, Stihl skip ground chain has rakers higher than a 3,000 lb Great White dorsal fin
I can round file like a mofo I’m real good with a round file I really been watching videos about square grind n such Those files are a little harder to find around here. But I think after watching this video I’m going to try it!!!
Harvey I love your videos I'm always expecting to learn something new! On the sharpening video I would like to add a word of caution for the less experienced at sharpening ... it's better to rotate the chain forward pulling against the doll end of the tooth when sharpening, if you're pulling the chain backward and the chain happens to stick and your fingers slip onto those freshly sharpened teeth you will lay your hand open! I know this because I've done it when I was in a hurry.. I've even ruined a couple leather gloves that way. Thanks again Harvey love all the stories
On a stone grinder the wheel spins the same direction for sharpening both sides of the chain. Do you think it would be better if the wheel changed directions? Give me your thought because I listen to your advice. I like your no bs approach. Thanks for videos.
@@stephenjambard64, on a hand held training course, years ago, tutor advised machine grind about every 5th filing. Just touch the tooth as lightly as possible. Multiple light strokes to avoid altering the temper. Keep the grinding wheel clean of gum etc. Years ago, certain Japanese built chain was prone to this due to metallurgical composition. Also used to shear cutters in extreme cold. KIS, keep it SOFT. Hope my attempted explanation helps. Keep safe.
When you go to pick your glasses that you need to see with at your local store! Find the smallest print on something that you can't see to read. Get a pair of glasses that make things clear for you! That's what I did

Been falling timber for 18 years on the west coast we run square ground chisel chain and we file the other way outside to in why you file inside out

Sure! Don’t go deep In yer gullet! Yer tooth will be a little more blunt but it will hold its sharpen longer!

Tilting the file 50-55 instead of 45 , so that the side plate angel is more 75-80 will the chain cut faster in softwoods like pine and sitka?

Harvey I love your videos I'm always expecting to learn something new! On the sharpening video I would like to add a word of caution for the less experienced at sharpening ... it's better to rotate the chain forward pulling against the doll end of the tooth when sharpening, if you're pulling the chain backward and the chain happens to stick and your fingers slip onto those freshly sharpened teeth you will lay your hand open! I know this because I've done it when I was in a hurry.. I've even ruined a couple leather gloves that way. Thanks again Harvey love all the stories

On a stone grinder the wheel spins the same direction for sharpening both sides of the chain. Do you think it would be better if the wheel changed directions? Give me your thought because I listen to your advice. I like your no bs approach. Thanks for videos.
I’ve never ground a chain in my life! It makes sense to me if you could reverse rotation it would make a better grind! Worth giving it a try!

@@stephenjambard64, on a hand held training course, years ago, tutor advised machine grind about every 5th filing. Just touch the tooth as lightly as possible. Multiple light strokes to avoid altering the temper. Keep the grinding wheel clean of gum etc.
Years ago, certain Japanese built chain was prone to this due to metallurgical composition. Also used to shear cutters in extreme cold.

When you go to pick your glasses that you need to see with at your local store! Find the smallest print on something that you can't see to read. Get a pair of glasses that make things clear for you! That's what I did
