The question of whether this is a suitable time or social/political climate for this issue is a valid question, but it needs to be asked in even more detail or more specifically. I think it is okay to talk about it now, because the discussion has to happened before the issue can be resolved. The question of equity in society in general is very relevant. The disparities that exist in society in general, are being raised as an issue politically, and I don't know how reparations can be addressed and resolved fairly, if the fundamental inequity of the society and in the economic system and structure, is not also, or firstly addressed.

I think that a lot of very educated white people came to America and their knowledge and hard work greatly contributed to the success of USA. I agree that black people need some help, but the name of this help should not be "reparations". I think welfare program is better name and it go to black people in need from mostly white people taxes. That program priceless as well. Black people in Africa would dream about program like that. Do you think that black people in Africa more happy than black people in USA? Also I will remind you that white people gave freedom to black slaves. They were the first who made black slaves free. I think that all people lived hard life in the past, we should not blame each other because result is good. Look at other countries, can you find better country than USA in Africa?
I disagree with Professor Kennedy when he tries to minimize the need to incorporate slavery into claims for black redress. Slavery is at the root of the problem and if atonement is sought, whites must apologize for what they've done and pay restitution to the descendants of African slaves (as well as victims of Jim Crow and continuing racism).
Direct payments would be a dreadful idea. People wouldn't know how to be responsible. Use it to fund communities.... Oh wait the government already does that.
The term reckon was mentioned a number of times. There is a need for a grand reckoning by humanity. One questioner raised the questions of where reparations as a general concept stops. The reality is that it should not stop. Much of humanity is due reparations for the historic injustices we have inflicted on each other. A just global economic system would be a form of reparations for humanity as well as a global peace dividend. George H.W. Bush and Margaret Thatcher in the 90's pose the idea of a peace dividend to the nations of the world, which simply pointed out how much good could be don't with the money wasted on weapons and wars. The economics and social benefit of it is not difficult to understand. A bit of that thinking was applied in the second Gulf war, when the U.S. resorted to playing Iraqis for their support in the war effort. I still don't know why someone like a Marianne Williamson doesn't promote this domestically and internationally. This pandemic and climate change should give us a respect for the idea that we are all linked together, whether we like it or not. We have a bigger threat than each other to deal with. It is in all our best interest to live, work and fight together, for our survival. The mind is the most powerful force other than the faith and beliefs we hold. Who knows whose mind has the solutions to the problems we face. Every mind should be given the opportunity to discover new inventions, that solve the pressing problems that threaten our well being and existence as a specie. Reparations is not a debt. it is a moral obligation, because of the high standards we are charged with as being revolved, enlightened, and or spiritual, religious beings, who are the product of a supreme beneficent being, who entrusted us to be the custodians of the planet we live on.
Let's take the total dollar amount agreed upon for reparations. Then take the total from the blacks that have received government benefits since available. Subtract and you get whats left, if any.
We were not the only people who receive public help. You need to research and see all race profit off of public assistance. Also research of how how the mid eastern profit right today.
With a good accuracy we can consider that Welfare is money from white people taxes. African Americans pay about 10% of total about of taxes. Welfare program has to be renamed. There has to be 2 parts: white to white assistance, white to black contributions. 14 trillion dollars will be paid in 15 years and after that it should be cancelled. Welfare program already estimated as 28 trillion dollars. At least half of it already paid by whites to African Americans. So in 15 years African Americans will get about 28 trillions dollars. Entire Africa does not have that money, not even close. So in 15 years the problem with reparations will be solved without additional money. After that all Welfare and Affirmative Action programs have to be finished and all people have to be equal.
@M. P. If we are talking about reparations then we have to consider how much money white people pay to black people now. Welfare comes from taxes, almost 1 trillion dollars per year. 90% of taxes from white people. Currently almost half of Welfare money paid to black people. So we can consider that black people getting almost half of trillion dollars from white people taxes every year. During Welfare program 27 trillions dollars paid already, so black people already got more than 10 trillions dollars from white people taxes. Welfare program has to be divided by 2 parts and renamed. There should be 2 programs: 1. not black to not black assistance 2. Not black to black reparations. That is all what I suggested. After that black people will see that white people paying them reparations and white people will see it as well. There will be no additional expenses.

Yes even your mother can get it….not reparations in the monetary since but you know
The UK OWES US AND THE REST OF EUROPE OWE US TOO!
Reparations = cash money 💰, free college tuition , and give us land, giving Black People back homes that was lost during the foreclosure crisis of 2008 because of the discriminatory high interest rate loans given by the banks, and investment in Black owned businesses!
We should get all that and be allowed to renounce citizenship. We were here before the United States was formed so they can’t kick us out.
But why can't people just use old pictures from share crop farms to prove that they are the descendants of slaves they know their stories better than anybody else do
This is one of the best conversations on reparations for slavery I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing this video. African-Americans must continue the fight for reparations. Our ancestors worked very hard, under horrible conditions, to build the wealth of America. We are entitled to the wages they never received.
@James Gray Thank you. Very well said.

If not now, when. The USA has promised on many occasions to repair the damage and reneged every time.
If you're not an American descendant of slavery, you're reparations and my reparations claims are two different claims. Doesn't matter whether you experience racism
We all deserve reparations Africans in America Africans in Europe and Africans in Africa we are one people so yes its same claim. My African American friend
@@commanderrreese8284 This specific justice claim is for the descendants of enslaved Africans, here, in The United States of America. #Reparations

Stop trying to profit from your great great great grandads suffering, it's disgusting.
I met REAL slaves in India [not black], I can understand them getting reparations from their oppressors. But unless YOU were a slave, get a job and handle your business
@James Gray mitch McConnell and Obama never owned slaves. If you're stuck on the past you shall never move forward 💯 🙂 👌
@James Gray there is certainly many injustice in the world and more so in the past. BUT by LAW, you can't be compensated for the suffering of your ancestors, and by LAW, you can't be punished for the sins of your forefathers. This is the case not only by law but also by divine law.
Have westerners held African Americans back? Is there a country in Africa, where there has been no outside influence from another type of peoples? if so, how far ahead or behind are they when compared to a country in Africa that has been influenced by an outsiders? i.e. if African Americans have had been held back 400 years in the USA, how far ahead or behind are Africans that have not been influenced, who have been left to their own devices and rate of advancement? Where are they compared to the countries that had colonial rule from westerners? I don't know the answer..what do you think? p.s. I am white, but grew up in Sudan & Kuwait..
Poor fella. Is this a scenario you concluded all yourself? 🤓
@@SunnyandNova It's clearly a question, not a scenario or statement. Try answering it. I'm sure there are African countries that have no outside influence that have done well for themselves, but I take it you don't believe that's possible then?
It's time we start judging people based on the content of their character instead of the color of their skin. Say NO to affirmative action. Say NO to reparations.

YOU'RE TROLLING Dr. King.... Read From Here To Equality by Darity to educate yourself.
@@rosmickens7568 There will never be equality. Making white people pay reparations for things their ancestors may or may not have done is ridiculous. And giving black people bonus points in college admissions for merely having darker skin is similarly absurd. I'm not going to read your idiotic propaganda.
I know many bi-racial persons who do not identify as black, but perhaps will now that reparations are on the table. In my opinion, their needs to be some sort of test, because everyone knows the more melanated the more discriminated.

teach the people also, how these to words work, that is a big thorn, one that will leave long lasting wounds, Filibuster, and filibustering, and how it works in voting on the left and the right, or even in your house hold between 3 family members ( dad said no to the sons request, the son ask mom, mom said yes, the the three set down to talk about the sons request for a car, who wins and who lose and use reconciliation also. reparation's takes on the same picture, and remember America is a Republic, for white people only, filibuster, and filibustering.
I agree but only descendents of slaves because a lot a blacks owned slaves also, slavery started in Africa thousands of years before whites even went, there is still slaves in Africa, and all the slave owners are black
I am for reparation if it include the native Indians, the Chinese and Asian people . They all suffered from the mistreatment of the past. And for sure, they need reparation. If reparation is to right what was wrong for all people of color, then I support it. But if it is only reserved for African American, I do not support that at all.

There is a problem with terminology, but not with reparations. 90% of taxes from white people money. Japanese Americans got reparations from american taxes, black Americans got Welfare from the same money. Welfare was 27 trillion dollars, at least 50% of it was given to black people. This is huge money. You just need to rename Welfare received by black people and consider it as reparations.
You really need to do research and look and see how many welfare Queen receive millions dollars and they are not black.
@@veronicaharris3857 I know that welfare program not for black people only. But almost all welfare money from not black people taxes, almost half of the trillion dollars per year just for black people, more than 10 trillion dollars for the entire period of welfare program. On top of that many free education, medicare, medicate, foot stamps, low cost apartments... . Affirmative Action program gave black people jobs just because they black. This money can be considered as reparations for black people.

@@61YrsYoung I know that not all black people used welfare program. But I know that not all white people had slaves as well. I know that black slaves worked hard, but I know that white people worked hard as well. Even more Black slaves worked hard in Africa and till now there are slaves in Africa, but there is now any good results of their hard work in Africa. Why America more successful than Africa?
Fund communities. What? That benefits everyone. Listen this is specifically for the Descendants of Africans ONLY. 🙄
I hope they aren’t immigrants 🤓
There is much I want to said about your little comment. but I will not put myself to the devil level.
