@scottaudetat3090 He's very selective with what he buys. He also only buys the best version of those select films. Just so you know he had a huge collection of VHS for a long time but sold most of them years ago and is now rebuilding his collection selectively.
@@Sono460 they have always overcharged. Then they have a "sale" which equates to the SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE. I say good riddance. Partner up with someone else.
yeah it really stinks....I love being able to find stuff and just browse stuff in the store with a cup of coffee in my hand and with B&N carrying Arrow, Criterion and Kino Lorber I could do that....but now that is largely going to be over with...
Your thieves in GA must be classy thieves compared to here in IL. These thieves don't want any main stream studio releases, they go for Criterion, HAHA
Loss and theft are always convenient excuses for poor management and refusing to fully staff stores to increase profit management...I've noticed this in so many stores, not just Wal-Mart and Barnes & Noble...in some cases (like Wal-Mart) they are still ratcheting up record profits, and Barnes & Noble has rebounded from years of disappointing numbers...I'm telling you, this probably has more to do with profit margins...Barnes & Noble probably thinks it can make more money selling cheap puzzles and anime crap than boutique blu-rays with a high price tag that only fly out of the stores when Criterion and Arrow have their sales
@@mynock250 maybe...I have no doubt that loss plays a factor in all of that, but these stores, specifically B & N, are very understaffed-almost never staff the media section...what's the reason? profit...when giant corporations bitch and moan about theft, the real answer is always profit...they don't want to spend their massive profits on properly staffing stores...so they blame theft, the breakdown of capitalist society (which they created btw) etc...always happens...besides, think about it, what's the resale value on a new Criterion blu-ray? $20-$25...and that's gone down cause the average person doesn't have the extra money to spend on a purely boutique item...In fact, I have started selling off some of my own Criterions, and replaced them w/ regular DVDs or Blu-Rays, cause I couldn't justify keeping them...always take anything that a corporation says with a grain of salt.
@@Theomite It's not theft...it's all about profit and the bottom line...if they are worried about theft, then hire more employees...this is the case everywhere from Wal-mart to Michaels to B & N...start staffing your media section...most of the time it's completely abandoned...they don't care, cause the average Criterion Blu-Ray has a very small resale value--even if its stolen...20-25 bucks, that's peanuts...they probably are going to start selling more profitable items instead w/o regard for loss.
B&N has a 50% off Arrow movies that ends on the 29th. In my area their employees confirmed there will be a Criterion sale just after the Arrow sale. I plan to get two Criterion flicks as soon as that happens.
I unfortunately have to wait for the proper 50% off sale. I'm too broke to do otherwise (I might make an exception for the REPO MAN 4K at my local store though)
I don't know if I've ever seen movies at Barnes and Noble? My local public library has an enormous DVD collection for renting. I also rent A LOT of older films through my TV. I just say the name of the movie into my voice command on my remote and it pops up for 3.99 to rent. I just watched "Copycat", I love that movie 🍿🎥.
My local B&N still has a criterion section, but I was in there a couple days ago, and they didn't even know about the Arrow video sale! Nothing was marked down or on shelves! Sad.
I live in Burbank California , home of the film industry. Our local Barnes & Noble took all the Criterion from the shelves 3 years ago because of theft. They have a limited range behind the counter.
Thanks for all the updates. Going into the Wal Mart seeing the Christmas stuff in September. It's not Halloween yet. My wife and I went into At Home the other day to look for some Halloween odds and ends to decorate with and it's like they were already getting rid of what Halloween they had moving it and starting to put out their Christmas. I'm like are you kidding me. What the hell is going on. It's not even October and they are getting rid of Halloween decorations for Christmas already. I guess we have to start Halloween shopping the week after the 4th of July. Thanks for all the updates on physical media.
The one thing I do like about Barnes and Nobles, they are the last place I know of that sells horror movie magazines in the wild. Fangoria, Horrorhound, and The Dark Side magazines are all awesome. They bring me back to focusing more on horror movies with horror movie history. It sobers me up out of dirty adult movies.
My Barnes and Noble has been like this for a long time now. They barely have any movies, as the section is only about 6 feet total. They also keep the Arrow and Criterion behind the counter, but it's only a handful of titles, and it sounds like those will be gone too. While I do think theft is a problem, I don't believe that is the only reason they are doing this. I read somewhere that they wanted to focus more on books, so their movies, collectible toys and such have been really cut back. I love finding stuff in the wild, but damn, it's becoming harder and harder to do so.
finding stuff in the wild is so awesome... I found the Arrow 4k Conan sets at my B&N a couple months ago when they were going for $100 on ebay and it was so fun! now, nothing like that will happen there again and if there are only a few select stores carrying them, those stores will never keep anything in stock because of the demand
My local B&N still has a big Criterion section, but they’re all really expensive compared to Amazon or Orbit. I just ran over there this weekend for the big Arrow sale. Got the Mexico Trilogy at 50% off for only $50.
B&N is always expensive...they mark up so they can put stuff on sale lol - such an old trick... The Mexico Trilogy is a good example, it was only $70 or $80 from Arrow when it came out, so 50% off should be $35 or $40... I saw that in my B&N before they pulled everything... $50 is still not a bad deal though!
@@AVAPopCulture yeah. $50 was still the cheapest versus everywhere else I checked and I didn’t wanna waste my trip up there so I pulled the trigger. Everywhere else I found it was no less than $70
It's your local B&N that made the change not all locations. My favorite local b&n still fully stocks criterion, arrow, kino and even some smaller labels. Just this month I've bought the Fellini and Bergman box sets at mine and they brought in full shelf lengths of seven samari, Godzilla and Scarface 4k's all just came out
@DwayneMaxwell it was the district manager that said they would be pulling back stock in all but their highest volume stores over time...I can only report what they said BUT others who do B&N criterion videos have also noticed stock being reduced and/or removed from locations they've been to countless times...your local store may be one of their higher volume stores...I hope the reverse the trend now that they are expanding store locations
@AVAPopCulture yeah I don't doubt it, I have multiple in my area (sf bay area) and I've visited others to see what they have but their selections are not as good as my favorite location so it's definitely a location that moves product. What shocked me about one of them is it's in a bigger city San Jose and they had a lot but the store was poorly ran all their vinyl records, 4k movies and box sets were behind the registers and their movie section while decently sized was an unorganized mess
@DwayneMaxwell It really stinks because my B&N was about 2 miles away and I'd just drive up there sometimes and grab a coffee and browse and now I have to drive to one of the big "mall anchor stores" to find criterion and other movies that aren't behind the register! They claim to be opening 60 new stores so I hope the way the run them improves and they realize how much business the Criterion and Arrow sales bring to all of the stores...most people, if they have to drive 30 minutes to an hour away to find a B&N with a good movie selection, they'll just end up skipping it and buying online even if they would rather support a brick and mortar store
@@AVAPopCulture I'm driving 30 minutes to get to either of them but luckily my good store is a long my commute route so I often stop there on my way home after work
While in Canada I don’t deal with Barnes, hard time believing the “theft” reasoning, as most bad actors are just scalpers buying to resell out the ass. Maybe I’m missing something not being in the states, but thus far Walmart hasn’t given me hassle the last year when picking up any physical media. Sorry to hear about this hurdle though.
Canda is very different....theft has been on a major upswing in the US the last 3 or 4 years! Re-sell is why they are stealing Criterion and Arrow because regualr studio releases wont bring anything on the resell because they are too common and easy to get
Wow sorry that’s happening at your Barnes & Noble. I spoke to the managers at the 2 closest B&N near me in NY & they said that’s not the case here. They have Criterion & Arrow out on display. They said it may be an issue in the area you live in but it’s not statewide. I do remember years ago the B&N near my office used to hold high theft items (at that time it was anime & Zane novels) behind the counter so it is something they actually do. I guess it’s a store by store/location issue.
Terrible. Esp. cause my B&N was right over the Delaware line in Christiana and only 30 mins from where i live in Maryland so I could save the 6% MD sales tax by going to that store.
I just bought that standard slip release of the movie Halloween the other day at Walmart. I think Scream put out that Halloween standard slip version for the Halloween holiday.
Thank you for sharing this information. I hate to see this happen. My local B&N still has a large section of Criterions, but there aren't many Arrow films left on the shelves. The only other change I've seen in the physical media section is the increase in shelves of vinyl LPs and fewer CDs. We've never had any Kino releases here. I haven't heard of any planned changes regarding Criterions, but I'll ask the next time I go in. One thing you said when you were walking around your B&N caught my attention. You picked up The Exorcist, which cost $40.00, and remarked that you could get it on Amazon for $13.00. The growth of Amazon is a huge factor in the demise of brick & mortar retail stores. They can't compete. Yes, retail theft is a big problem, but Amazon is being allowed to take over the entire retail landscape. They will eventually be the only place you can buy anything, a development I find both sad and boring.
yeah, $13.99 is the sale price on the exorcist on amazon BUT if a profit can be made at $13.99, then B&N doesnt need to try to sell it for $40 to make a profit...they mark prices up so they can put them on sale...that is an old tactic but not one that works as well in the age of online shopping! Hopefully your B&N stays one of the "normal" ones!!!
They are discontinuing the only reason I’ve been into a Barnes & Noble in the last 10 years?! I honestly don’t really care if they do, as I can easily buy movies elsewhere at the same price or less, and with much less hassle. I bought from them to support local brick and mortar stores, and while I was in there I bought books, magazines, coffee, and muffins.
Thieves will be thieves. Economy has nothing to do with for the specific Criterion and Arrow releases. They are targeted because of the high resale value on the used market. Same way Apple products are targeted more than Android products. I remember back in the day when Toyota Camrys and Honda Civics were huge targets. There used part value was high. The only indicator of economy is there is a market out there willing to pay above average prices for Criterion and Arrow video releases. I haven't been to my Barnes and Noble recently but is the only one in the largest metro of the state and movie section is already in a walled off area in the back corner with a security detectors at the entrance and it's own check out register. I am going to assume this location will continue to get titles.
My B&N took the doors off their restrooms because of "vandalism." They even have papers taped to the door frames telling people of why. The only vandalism I've ever seen in the wall of the bathroom stall, which is a given in ANY public restroom, but it was never bad enough to to pull the feckin' *doors* off!
They make it too hard for companies to go after thieves these days. The crooks have more rights than the paying patrons. They steal because they know they can and most won’t pursue them. So aggravating
Very sad indeed. Our B&Ns in NYC has a dedicated security guard constantly patrolling in the physical media section of the store. Hopefully this will be enough to justify not pulling Arrow and Criterion media off the shelves.
I found that out the hard way when I tried to order the Canadian edition of Tegan + Sara's _High School_ for my collection. Found out that 1) no B&N up there and 2) no legal way to import that edition. I live 4 hours from the border and it would've been easier to physically to drive into Canada, buy it and bring it back than it would've been to ship it.
My store got all of the Arrow new releases this week. I am dropping my hunt soon. They also had a fully stocked Criterion section with all new releases. They did put new security tabs on top of every movie in the store.
I have also lamented the loss of places that sell physical media. There used to be a great store called Fry’s in my area years ago that closed that had a wonderful selection. After that I had to turn to Best Buy and we all know what happened there. My Barnes and Noble has almost nothing and my Walmart usually has mostly DVD and a few Blu Rays but nothing special. These days, if you want to stay up to date, you have to do constant research, enable notification spam, and be proficient in python scripting so you can query vendor API’s to keep up with stock updates. Especially for stuff like Conan or the rumored release of The Keep. Done ranting now. Good stuff as always. Keep up the great work.
thanks my friend! yeah, there is something so fun and special still about finding things in the wild and losing places to do that really stinks!!! I found the Arrow 4k Conan sets at my B&N a couple months ago when they were going for $100 on ebay and it was so fun! now, nothing like that will happen there again...
@@Theomite Purely a rumor at this point. An artist had posted some art for sale on a website that was titled something along the lines of the_keep_vinegar_syndrome_cover or something like that. The paintings were definitely of Molasar standing in front of the keep with the unique crosses everywhere. The art was taken down in minutes but not before it was caught by some folks. So now folks are thinking it may be about to release soon.
I am not used to have any physical media in stores here since maybe 2004. Since then its been internet for me. Question is: will they still have Arrow and Criterion online?
@@AVAPopCulture understood! Me too if I could. Not all ship internationally. Orbit and Diabolik do but the shipping costs there are crazy for international buyers. My last Diabllik order had a $157 shipping cost. So I ordered a whole lot to get the shipping cost down per movie. Otherwise it is about $10 extra per item.
I feel kind of bad because a couple months ago I only went into the B&N store to return a Criterion when I bought a duplicate. I was part of the problem.
Pretty dumb of them. Just like Best Buy, they are going to lose money. That's lazy business practice. And they're using Theft as an excuse. STREAMING SUCKS!
Damn that sucks! I’m blessed that my Barnes and noble always has everything I’m looking for criterion arrow must be a lot of collectors here in clearwater Florida lol
This sucks. I don't go often to Barnes & Noble enough anyway. If only for their Criterion sales, which is only twice a year. Sometimes, I end up buying a Criterion title on Amazon if they price match it. There's really only three B&N near me. One of them already discontinued physical media many years ago. There's still a chance that B&N may still continue physical media online only 🤷♂️
Except books? Are you serious? They are a book store. They carry some of the widest selection of books anywhere. How is that even possible? 😳 Maybe you should take another look buddy
Well if Criterion and Arrow movies were not $40-50 a pop, they might have kept them at Barnes and Noble. The only time I can see going to Barnes and Noble is for the 50 percent off criterion sale. Even then youre still paying 20-25 dollars per movie. They are too expensive for the majority of movie collectors.
@@Theomite I always wonder why horror movie collectors foam at the mouth for Criterion releases? I don't get it. Severin Films, Vinegar Syndrome, and Kino Lorber are in my opinion the top 3 best boutique labels restoring classic movies. Shout Factory and Blue Underground are no longer all that great since they are going the way of 4K UHD only and indirectly told anyone who can't afford to upgrade to 4K to take a hike.
@@dustbin5044 Criterion is the OG. Without them, the other labels wouldn't have a model or clout to even get started. They also have prestige, which helps lend credibility to an already stigmatized genre. Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader has some pointed opinions about their choice of Pixelogic for disc mastering because of tiling and compressing artifacts as well. Kino's spotty on QC. Their color timing tends to be wonky in some releases, sometimes they screw up the aspect ratio, and they do little to any additional packaging or special features beyond importing previous ones. Shout! Factory is better in a way, but I think their bit rates are a bit lower than they should be. They also won't cough up coin to interview lead cast members. They also cram bonus features onto the Blu-rays reducing the amount of data space for resolution. Arrow, Vinegar Syndrome, and Severin are probably the top 3 in the game given their selections and care in restoration. The VS restoration of SHOWGIRLS made me re-evaluate the film entirely. Kino get by through the sheer size of their catalog and the dual-format options and frequent sales.
I absolutely refuse to buy physical media from Walmart, they are known for editing the titles they sell, no way! great selection but there's a catch, knew about this for years.
My local BN is a big one and it has no media of any kind at least for the 10 years Ive lived there, another BN close by has a section like you showed but its a little bit more picked through. The new CEO has said, he wants BN to get back to books not toys and movies, so maybe a corporate wide thing.
yeah she made it clear that it would be happening across the board...it seems funny to me though because those Criterion and Arrow sales drive a lot of business to B&N
I was in a Ontario Canada Walmart yesterday and asked why they never have any 4K titles. They said whenever they stock them they stolen right away, and it's not worth it to confront the person when they leave as they could pull out a knife so Walmart just writes them off. Since it was a Tuesday I asked what 4K titles they had in the boxes of new releases... they only had 2 copies each of Longlegs, Bad Boys and Despicable Me. Pretty sad that theft is limiting how retail stores look how they want to handle 4K titles, which is why here retail isn't much of an option
I wasn't even aware that B&N carried physical media at all until I heard about the Criterion sale a couple of months ago. I did buy a couple of Arrow releases from them online this month, hopefully the online thing will continue at least.
Meanwhile mine here in NJ just expanded their movie selection and is carrying more than ever. That sucks, dude. People need to get their shit together and stop stealing.
B&N in store has insane prices to begin with, screw them. If it wasn't for Arrows sale online no one would buy their crap. The same goes for Criterion. Only buy when they have a great sale. On a side note Chase you should know better not to record and drive. It's the same as texting and driving. Come on dude be better than that!!
@@AVAPopCultureNo excuses kid. I died laughing when you said it wasn't a busy area. It will be busy when you are recording and running over someone. We're all guilty of it playing on our phones and driving. Nature of the beast.
Don't know if it goes for every store or how true it is but I found a redit page that had some people talking about how the Criterion Collection sections in there local store were gone and when they asked about it they were told management had them removed because they were the most shop lifted item in the store. Several other people replied that this was also the case at there B&N locations as well.
I believe it, theft has become normalized and accepted. Coupled with no security and employees who are afraid to say anything. They need to lock and chain the stuff up, like at drug stores. The anchor stores have security.
Last year I went into the closest B&N (hour away) for the Criterion sale in November, they had virtually nothing. I was told the next closest store (45 minutes away) had more of them. No thanks. Haven't bothered since. I might have to replace my Nightmare on Elmstreet collection for the Walmart set. Currently have the first collection release in the monstrous box with clamshell cases, takes up too much space. Christmas in September!
@GnrlLee01 the one with my logo on it came from "@ianspumpkincarvings" who I found on Instagram...the others came from spirit halloween 🎃 many years ago
@@AVAPopCulture Guess that could be the case. Seems like it'd have to be people who really know what to look for then. And how many are they stealing at a time? Lol just such a fascinating thing. Feels like security at my BN is off the charts sometimes with the spider wraps and plastic cases they put things in. You used a specific word when going into detail about the BN situation - you said chargebacks , are people placing orders then just cancelling the transaction or something - is that possible? But that also led me to the thought of returns. Is it possible people order online during sales and then do returns/exchanges in store when they received damaged items - that will then sit on a shelf for ages since collectors typically want a non damaged package - could that be hurting their profit margins? This seems almost more likely than the stealing thing to me with the way collectors are.
I don’t have a Barnes & Noble close to me, so this doesn’t affect me, but I still feel bad for people who enjoy finding physical media there. If online sales aren’t proof enough, this is just another reason why physical media is alive and well. People can’t wait to get their hands on this stuff, even if they’re not paying for it. Damn shame though. It ruins it for others
You know what's good news? You wearing that awesome shirt from Spencer's made me know it existed, and I just grabbed one myself. Love any illustrated type shirt that's video store based. Terror Threads has done some cool ones as well.
Sucks to be them but Amazon and eBay sell Criterion and Arrow at every day lower prices not just twice a year. I just bought Lynch’s Lost Highway on 4K Criterion for $28 where my local B&N charges $40. And I’m not going to force myself to have some lowly paid worker physically stand behind me watching me decide if I want to buy something or not. They can shove that idea right up their English Channel.
@@Theomite That maybe true but that’s only twice a year whereas the rest of the year they sit there collecting dust under their $40+ price tags. Hell even when I do have the extra money, I’m not dumb enough to shell out the extra $20 when I know I can get it cheaper somewhere else.
This really sucks. I've been very happy that B&N has been keeping a decent stock of movies and running pretty good sales. Such a shame. At least I got my Arrow tote bag I guess 😂
People been laughing at me when I said the price of physical media was going up because 1. We keep buying it. 2. Theft. People told me I was wrong about the theft part. 😢
I have 2 B&N stores near me. One has hardly any Criterion and Arrow videos in store. The other has a nice huge section of Criterion and a decent section of Arrows. What a contrast. Walmart takes out their steelbooks in their special rack and puts in those Halloween themed video's. That's lame. I did hit my local Walmart the other day and checked out movies and lo and behold, there was a 4K steelbook of Kevin Costner's Horizon. Grabbed that bad boy quick. Also heard a few weeks back that Walmart might be ditching all their movies in October. Can't say for sure, just what I heard.
I don't see how Barnes& Noble is in business anymore. I used to go there decades ago and buy magazines and now I think magazines are 15 or $16 a piece. And their stuff is so overpriced. I just take pictures of everything I like and go by it somewhere else. It is sad to see but last time I went to my local one I live in an area basically where there's five or six and they all pretty much got rid of a lot of the same stuff and made records more popular (because it seems everything old is new again). Maybe they'll start getting VHS tapes back. Haha. My local Walmart is 99% locked up now for DVDs and blu-rays and then there's like two or three sections that aren't. That always confuses me.
- Goes to Barnes & Nobel - Complains about prices and inventory - Doesn't support the store and buy anything - Proceeds to Complain and wonder why Barnes & Nobel is discontinuing their movie section and slowly going outta business 🤔
Interesting perspective. As someone who worked at a B&N years ago, and in the music/movies department, the problem was self-inflicted by the company. Ex - The movie "The Martian". We had the dvd version. We had the B&N dvd version (same movie, just different SKU, possibly different slipcover). We had the Blu-ray version. We had the B&N Blu-ray version. Then there was the director's cut. Rinse, repeat. Too many SKU's for the same movie, all overpriced because the inventory was not selling enough copies so B&N could lower the prices (either that, or they had poor negotiating skills with their distributors). So, which copies sold the most? The cheapest ones, which usually meant one of the dvd versions, leaving everything else to collect dust on the shelves. I should also add that the district manager for the company had his office in our store, and even back then, the company had a very low opinion about physical media, be it CD's or movies. As soon as various sites started mentioning the "upcoming" UHD 4K format, I let the district manager know, and his response was nonplussed. And when the UHD's came out, our store didn't carry any of them.
@jeffcarlin5866 They have Criterion sale along with other bonuses and perks. But the point of my original comment was this guy is phony. He makes a clickbait video about "the downfall of physical media". Gripes about Barnes & Nobel prices and availability, even though you know he probably hasn't shopped there in over a year. Then whines about them squeezing out the video and music inventory, which wouldn't have happened if HE and everybody else hadn't abandoned brick and mortar stores for Amazon.
All Walmart stores are poorly stocked. The employees are only there to collect a paycheck and have no interest in doing their job or knowing anything about their jobs. We don't even waste our time going there anymore. I used to think it was just the Hartford WI store because that one by far is completely horrible, but it's pretty bad at all of them.
Sean, I was at a Walmart that is kind of close to my house and wanted to check out their Steelbook section. I had checked out a couple of other stores before and wanted to see what they had. I could not find any to save my life. I finally asked some goofball employee where their Steelbook section was. He says, only books we have are over there, pointing to an area. But don't have any with steel covers. I said no, not books, Steelbook movies, 4K movies in a steel case. He didn't even know what I was talking about. He was totally clueless. As it was, their entire movie section was about 4-5 ft of wall space.
I'm wondering whether it is a matter of B&N breaking off its sales partnership with Criterion, or is it Criterion ending its business relationship with B&N because of the launch of its own Criterion Closet mobile van?
That van isn't going everywhere, and you still run into the problem of people being able to afford stuff. Most people would go to that van, pick out the 1 they want and don't have and that's it because they can't afford to buy any more.
Kinda of a let down.. but not for the reason specified. I saw you for a millisecond on the recent Joe Bob marathon. Juuuuussst dipped my toe in and I get disappointed by this click bait headline. B&N is actually expanding their PM presence in the stores they feel will support it.

That is really sad. Sounds like it's going to get like how it is in Canada and online purchases is pretty much the only game in town
I hope not....
When that day comes I will erase my gmail account and go permanently offline. I am preparing to go Amish anyway. F- the system.
I agree, but people steal movies all the time they probably lose more to theft then they sell.
The Lego sets and romantasy booktok legions are probably a big part of it. Also possibly the vinyl, but I can't be sure.
You are lucky. Your store must one of the few still carrying them.
Sad.
Well that stinks. Thank you for the news.
I live in Burbank California , home of the film industry. Our local Barnes & Noble took all the Criterion from the shelves 3 years ago because of theft. They have a limited range behind the counter.
it is crazy isnt it? they film a lot here in Georgia too and to think there will only be 3 total B&N where the physical media stays "normal" is crazy!
@@AVAPopCultureWalmart here displays 90 percent DVDs . Limited Blu-ray and 4Ks
I have not been to a Barnes & Noble in 10 years and haven’t bought anything from one in 20 years.
They have good sugar cookies.
Thanks for the heads up. Just purchased a few Arrow 4K’s online at B&N.
my B&N had about 12 arrow releases left and keep them behind the counter....
@@AVAPopCulture if you order online and spend $50 you get free shipping. Picked up tremors and 12 monkeys.
@@AVAPopCulture I'm driving 30 minutes to get to either of them but luckily my good store is a long my commute route so I often stop there on my way home after work
Damn, the Puzzle peeps are taking over!
It really sucks man...as this implementation expands, there will only be a handful of anchor stores where you can find physical stock
"Big puzzle" is mocking us!
@@stickywicked447 🤣
The Barnes & Noble closest to me didn’t have the greatest selection so I rarely went in there. But I still hate hearing this news
mine didnt have the best selection either BUT it was at least "something" to go browse through and look at
While in Canada I don’t deal with Barnes, hard time believing the “theft” reasoning, as most bad actors are just scalpers buying to resell out the ass. Maybe I’m missing something not being in the states, but thus far Walmart hasn’t given me hassle the last year when picking up any physical media. Sorry to hear about this hurdle though.
Canda is very different....theft has been on a major upswing in the US the last 3 or 4 years! Re-sell is why they are stealing Criterion and Arrow because regualr studio releases wont bring anything on the resell because they are too common and easy to get
That’s crazy I just asked my local B&N staff if they think this would happen and they said probably not any time soon
This was rumored a while back, the new ceo is making them all like book stores again. We just got one and there is only books and starbucks.
I had a bad feeling something was happening a couple weeks ago when I went in there and the section was cleared out
Which I don't get, because there's movie adaptations of books, so having movies SOMEWHERE would make sense.
It will depend on the store...they said that 3-5 high volume stores per state on average would not change
Yeah it is state and nationwide...just depends on your areas - it is not ALL stores
Terrible. Esp. cause my B&N was right over the Delaware line in Christiana and only 30 mins from where i live in Maryland so I could save the 6% MD sales tax by going to that store.
@@undericeaxeman hopefully your B&N will be one of the ones that remains unchanged!
I just bought that standard slip release of the movie Halloween the other day at Walmart. I think Scream put out that Halloween standard slip version for the Halloween holiday.
I live in NC and this happened to both of my local B&N stores two weeks ago.
@@AVAPopCulture Good point about price markup!!
Is there a Bull Moose, Fries, or FYE anywhere in your area? One of those could be your saving grace.
@dustbin5044 there is an fye about 30 minutes away...all the fries stores closed up here several years ago
The future of boutiques has everything but the boutique heheh
LOL
They are discontinuing the only reason I’ve been into a Barnes & Noble in the last 10 years?! I honestly don’t really care if they do, as I can easily buy movies elsewhere at the same price or less, and with much less hassle. I bought from them to support local brick and mortar stores, and while I was in there I bought books, magazines, coffee, and muffins.
same for me!
I'm a Canadian and we don't have Barnes and Noble but this sucks man. Sorry to hear this.
@JEFFMAN316 they told me some stores would remain unchanged except security measures as I mentioned! Hopefully your store is one of those
You are lucky. Your store must be one of the few in each state that they are still carrying them.

I am not used to have any physical media in stores here since maybe 2004. Since then its been internet for me.
Question is: will they still have Arrow and Criterion online?
I would assume so, but if I am ordering online, I may as well order from Arrow, Criterion or from a place like Orbit etc and skip the middle man!
I mean, when it comes to theft they can only blame themselves (B&N) for not staffing properly. If they did they wouldn’t have as much of a problem.
I hear they're still paying like $12/hr in most stores.
I feel kind of bad because a couple months ago I only went into the B&N store to return a Criterion when I bought a duplicate. I was part of the problem.

This sucks. I don't go often to Barnes & Noble enough anyway. If only for their Criterion sales, which is only twice a year. Sometimes, I end up buying a Criterion title on Amazon if they price match it. There's really only three B&N near me. One of them already discontinued physical media many years ago. There's still a chance that B&N may still continue physical media online only 🤷♂️
Black Friday at Walmart and Target going to do a very big push to get rid of the Dvds 50% to 80% because next year no longer going to carry them.
My local Barnes and Noble carry Everything except books and Movies. When I do go to far away stores the Movies are at least twice the price.
Except books? Are you serious? They are a book store. They carry some of the widest selection of books anywhere. How is that even possible? 😳 Maybe you should take another look buddy
I highly doubt they don’t carry books. Check again
I'd agree with you a few years ago. But nowadays, most collectors save up all year to prep for those sales.
They need a media vending machine 👍 here in UK the HMV store doesn't carry the steelbooks
Another reason for me not to set foot in B&N.🤷🏻♂️
I was in a Ontario Canada Walmart yesterday and asked why they never have any 4K titles. They said whenever they stock them they stolen right away, and it's not worth it to confront the person when they leave as they could pull out a knife so Walmart just writes them off. Since it was a Tuesday I asked what 4K titles they had in the boxes of new releases... they only had 2 copies each of Longlegs, Bad Boys and Despicable Me. Pretty sad that theft is limiting how retail stores look how they want to handle 4K titles, which is why here retail isn't much of an option
really sad isnt it....smh
I wasn't even aware that B&N carried physical media at all until I heard about the Criterion sale a couple of months ago. I did buy a couple of Arrow releases from them online this month, hopefully the online thing will continue at least.
hopefully they keep your local B&N as one of the ones that is unchanged by this
Meanwhile mine here in NJ just expanded their movie selection and is carrying more than ever.

I'm really not buying the theft reasoning. Who's running into BN and stealing ONLY criterion and arrow discs? Seems insane lmao
Criterion and Arrow would fetch teh most on the re-sale market... nobody is buying newer studio releases on the re-sale market would be my guess
It ruins it for others
yeah, not carrying it in-store seems like a bad move - especially when you consider how big their Criterion B&N 50% off sales are!
You know what's good news? You wearing that awesome shirt from Spencer's made me know it existed, and I just grabbed one myself. Love any illustrated type shirt that's video store based. Terror Threads has done some cool ones as well.

Where did you get tge hat and shirt??? Those are sweet!
As long as they have it during the July and November sale months we are good.
They aren't going to in most places...that's the point
Sucks to be them but Amazon and eBay sell Criterion and Arrow at every day lower prices not just twice a year. I just bought Lynch’s Lost Highway on 4K Criterion for $28 where my local B&N charges $40. And I’m not going to force myself to have some lowly paid worker physically stand behind me watching me decide if I want to buy something or not. They can shove that idea right up their English Channel.
Amazon has a lot of the Arrow titles half price too -- but I also have additional 30% off coupons to stack on top of 50% off.
The 50% off sale does better than Amazon. You just have to wait for July and November.
@@Theomite That maybe true but that’s only twice a year whereas the rest of the year they sit there collecting dust under their $40+ price tags. Hell even when I do have the extra money, I’m not dumb enough to shell out the extra $20 when I know I can get it cheaper somewhere else.
@@CryWolf-sm9iw Right, I was saying that by waiting you can get 50% instead of settling for 30%.

I usually go to mine about every couple weeks just to browse th emovies and grab a coffee....now I have no reason to go...sad
People been laughing at me when I said the price of physical media was going up because
1. We keep buying it.
2. Theft.
People told me I was wrong about the theft part. 😢
it is playing a huge part!!
Just finished your video, Im thinking the theft is real, almost everyone at BN looked like they were stealing something.
- Goes to Barnes & Nobel
- Complains about prices and inventory
- Doesn't support the store and buy anything
- Proceeds to Complain and wonder why Barnes & Nobel is discontinuing their movie section and slowly going outta business 🤔
Their prices are way too high -- twice the price as other retailers.
@jeffcarlin5866
They have Criterion sale along with other bonuses and perks.
@@ekahnoman7331 This man shops at Barnes and Noble whenever they have a Criterion sale -- twice per year.
Yeah Walmart has about given up on trying at this point lol
Sean, I was at a Walmart that is kind of close to my house and wanted to check out their Steelbook section. I had checked out a couple of other stores before and wanted to see what they had. I could not find any to save my life. I finally asked some goofball employee where their Steelbook section was. He says, only books we have are over there, pointing to an area. But don't have any with steel covers. I said no, not books, Steelbook movies, 4K movies in a steel case. He didn't even know what I was talking about. He was totally clueless. As it was, their entire movie section was about 4-5 ft of wall space.
I don’t like this news 😢
me either! hoepfully the B&N nearest you stays normal!
@@AVAPopCulture unfortunately they don’t carry any physical media except for some CDs and maybe a couple records in Vegas
But Chase... our economy is great! Bidenomics, baby! 😆
I wish someone would tell my income and bills (looking at you food, gas, and interest rates) that the economy is great hahaha
@@AVAPopCulture here's your 'joe biden I did that' sticker here.
Kinda of a let down.. but not for the reason specified. I saw you for a millisecond on the recent Joe Bob marathon. Juuuuussst dipped my toe in and I get disappointed by this click bait headline. B&N is actually expanding their PM presence in the stores they feel will support it.
LOL "clickbait"? I literally showed you the evidence and reported what I was told by the district manager of B&N
you saw me on Joe Bob? I didnt know I was on there lol
@@AVAPopCulture Last few minutes of the marathon when they were showing the fans. I had already seen a couple of your videos and recognized you. 👍
@@akubrick1 oh damn! I didnt even know lol
Is it against the rules for you to record audio hearing what Barnes and nobles manager says? That woulda been interesting content , someone needs to give you sunglasses with a camera lol jk , great video 💪🏼
I didnt want to shove my camera in her face lol...I dont use my phone so it is pretty obvious I am filming and she probably would not have said much on camera...but I repeated all of the meaningful details she told me
@@AVAPopCulture most definitely 👍

This past three years has been tough for myself and my Dear Friend who lives just under 200 miles away.
I have been supporting two houses on one wage so I Deeply Appreciate Where your coming from.
From February this year I have been without my Home Theatre TV as it finally broke down, and am not able to replace it until around December.if all goes well.
I have two weeks of annual leave to take from the end of September and November, but have decided to stay home to save a good deal of money.
It's tough Friend it really is and I am also in the process of getting our online business off the ground however this takes money.
The Good news is that I am in Good Health, I have a Roof over my head, the bills are Paid, I have plenty of food to eat and clothes on my back.
Everything else is a bonus.
You take good care and feel free to reach out anytime.
No pressure just mentioning

How about actually reporting the issue instead of spending 5 minutes repeating the same thing " i have some big hews etc etc etc .boring.
How about don’t be a jerk?
I live outside Toronto, finally went to Vinegar Syndrome the store the other day…amazing store, and they even carry Arrow, and Synapse and other labels…I went for a copy of Road House and Texas Chainsaw 2. The guy at the store didnt have any copies of road house in stock but then he pointed to a copy of HP Lovecraft’s From Beyond with the slip cover…and hes like: this one is OOP, and its just sitting here brand new and It goes for $150+ on ebay.
So I bought it for $45 cdn which is like $30US…wild find…being in that store for 15mins was hard…i would have spent way more than I had if i did not have a conscience. Having some of those movies, with the packaging, the boxes, the slip covers in my hand - just magic..its a shame that these shops are dying out
To be fair, their Arrow section is tiny anyways. Criterion...does anyone buy them unless they're at 50% off?

You literally just repeated the same sentences to setup the video 4 times in the first 3 minutes 🤷♂️
Gotta stretch that runtime for the algorithm 🙄
my B&N music/movie section has been slowly getting smaller and smaller. two-three years ago the media section was mostly funko pops. its truly sad to see physical media is dying out.
