- The lyrics to 'I am Australian' were written in 1987 by Bruce Woodley of 'The Seekers' and Dobe Newton of 'The Bushwackers' and set to music composed by Bruce Woodley.
The Seekers were a group of musicians from Melbourne, Australia who came together in 1962. The recording was made during a Melbourne performance during their 25 Year Silver Jubilee Reunion Celebration tour in 1993.

I’m a first gen Aussie. My parents were born in Lebanon. Whenever I sing along with this song, I break down. We are so lucky to call this place home
Just became an Australian today, this song actually brings tears to my eyes.
I know this is really late but congratulations
Every fucking time i listen to it
BlueAnimations BAHA no its not! This is the original! :)

Welcome to Australia!
I migrated in 1988. My tribe has increased with 2 Australian born daughters and 3 grandchildren. 🇦🇺🇵🇭 proud Filipino Australian ❤️ 💙 💖
My family came to Australia 132 years ago. I am proud to be an Australian.
Should be our national anthem. Has every significant aspect of Australian history. Incredible song.
Definitely agree as well. But the problem is Australia already has a great national anthem, Advance Australia Fair. So it would be hard to chose between both, and the public prefers the current. Its both ways for me. :/
***** The verses we dont sing in advance australian fair are all about how great the british are >.>
DoYouEvenScience Oh, I didn't know that. Are you sure?
Positive. Here is one of the verses.
When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
"Brittannia rules the wave!"
***** and another.
Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand;
Brittannia then shall surely know,
Beyond wide ocean's roll,
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep a British soul.
In joyful strains the let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

I came to Australia 20 years ago as a Chinese international student, I graduated from university, build my career, married, and have my child. I am very grateful for what Australia gives and I am very proud to be an Australian.

My favourite Australian was formally Chinese. And now the comedian Aaron Chen is every bit as Australian as I am.

I was born in England and came here as a ten pound pomme with my Mum and Dad when I was 5. I am now 70 and have experienced floods, droughts, heat, flies and bushfires. I have seen Australia grow, and have seen her people struggle to eek out a living, while never giving up. I have seen her young men go off to war too many times. But this song to be epitomizes everything that is Australian. I am proud to call myself an Australian.

Absolutely! No song ever written better sums up a multicultural society and unifies it. Everyone who contributed to making this country what it is and will be in its 50,000 year journey is celebrated for what they bring.
Your right it should be our national anthem and I also live in NSW

I came to live in Australia in 2011. And I one thing that I want to say is that I'm grateful to Australia for accepting me. Really great people here. They are the most sincere and open people in the world. Not the most soft-speaking and a bit rough around the edges at times, but definitely genuine, straight and hard working ones, they are.
I'm proud to call myself an Aussie.
I really am glad to hear that. I loved it too, but hated the way their native people were treated - worse than happened in Nazi Germany but because of the way it was done , it was acceptable- same in Canada etc., etc., Anyway, like all my friends at the time ("80s) we all had a good time , and worked hard while on Oz but nothing could compare to Irish people and culture , so we returned Been back twice and although loved the out back and sea . The political situation leaves a lot to be desired along with now being one of the most expensive places to live . So we feel here, like you do that we live in the best country in the world. ❤
Albert Abuzarov ❤️ 🇦🇺 thank you for your kind words😊

Despite our different climates, and subtle cultural differences, we are more similar by many observable metrics, and share more common values with one another than perhaps any other countries, even your southern neighbours. We love our Canadian mates too.

+Joyce Capewell Isn't that pretty much every country at some point. I'm an Australian but lived my life in NZ, I'm proud to be both despite the bad things for both countries. Every country has their pros and cons but this song just makes me feel more connected to Australia, maybe it's just because I grew up with the song, that and Waltzing Matilda.
Both songs are hypocrisy 'colonialism lies'. Excuses for 'colonialism Apartheid terrorism'
is not something to b proud about.

Poor Lazarus - somehow I get the feeling you do not love the truth.

It's just 1 min more than our national anthem and we don't even sing the whole song anyway we could just sing the chorus or something. But it's true this is much better than our national anthem, but I think they are keeping it because it has been our national anthem for over 43 years. I came from the dream-time, from the dusty red soil plains
I am the ancient heart, the keeper of the flame.
I stood upon the rocky shore, I watched the tall ships come.
For forty thousand years I’ve been the first Australian.
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian
I came upon the prison ship, bowed down by iron chains.
I cleared the land, endured the lash and waited for the rains.
I’m a settler, I’m a farmer’s wife on a dry and barren run
A convict then a free man, I became Australian.
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian

I’m a child of the depression, I saw the good times come
I’m a bushy, I’m a battler, I am Australian
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian

I am Clancy on his horse, I’m Ned Kelly on the run
I’m the one who waltzed Matilda, I am Australian

And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian

I’m the mountains and the valleys, I’m the drought and flooding rains
I am the rock, I am the sky, the rivers when they run
The spirit of this great land, I am Australian
We are one, but we are many

We were new here in 2004 just moved from U.A.E.
as we are originally Indians but were living in U.A.E for 20 plus years and all kids were born and brought up there.
When my eldest son was 18 yrs old and my husband decided to move some secure and good country for kids future...and so we decided to move to Australia, and we were here than on Business and investors Visa..
My youngest Daughter was than 7 yrs old and was in Grade 2, She attended her School, it was her first or second week in new School in Australia,.. and Teacher in Class was teaching them
"THAT WE ARE ALL AUSTRALIAN, WE SHOULD RESPECT OUR COUNTRY, WE SHOULD LOVE OUR COUNTRY".
and my Daughter told her Teacher ,I am not AN AUSTRALIAN, I was born in MID-EAST,
I AM AN INDO-ARAB GIRL....WHY SHOULD I LOVE THIS COUNTRY,
MY FRIENDS ARE ALL IN MID-EAST,...I AM ALL ALONE IN HERE,....I HATE TO BE HERE,
her Teacher called me and told me about what had happened in the classroom,
I explained her ,we have just moved here, she misses everything she had left back, KINDLY PLEASE help me and my Daughter..
The Teacher was so much AMAZINGLY GOOD, UNDERSTANDING my situation , she immediately told OK "MRS R" you don't worry we will take care of this, WE are TRAINED to handle this SITUATION and she promised me
"YOUR DAUGHTER WILL START CALLING HERSELF SOON I AM AN AUSTRALIAN GIRL."
I THANKED HER, but was still worried how can I help my girl feel home here , BUT to my amaze when she came home from school, she was different and was so much HAPPY, telling me MOMMY my Teacher "MRS BROWN" have given me a singing part in my School Concert...
I have to learn this SONG, come mother help me memorize this part of song... I told ok what's the song is show me... and this was the song. The words of this song made me cry..
.it made me ALSO feel that we belong here.. and made me love this country more n more n more forever..
"WE ARE ONE BUT WE ARE MANY
AND FROM ALL THE LAND OF EARTH WE COME
WE SHARE A DREAM AND SING WITH ONE VOICE
"I AM , YOU ARE, WE ARE AUSTRALIAN"
and really from that time my girl started making new Friends in school , she started to stay HAPPY..
I THANKED TO TEACHER AND TOLD HER I AM REALLY VERY GRATEFUL TO HER.
I APPRECIATE HER KINDNESS..
she had given me so big huge PEACE of mind and soul...
MAY SHE GETS ALL THE BLESSINGS OF GOD FOREVER N EVER FOR HER.
.no words can thank her ... cant thank her in words...
now my Girl is working with Bank full time and studying her masters and she is so happy ,calling her self a proud AUSTRALIAN GIRL...

I have to say, out of all the Anglophone nations, Australia and New Zealand are the most blessed. They are both home to two different groups of indigenous populations which have greatly shaped the cultures of their respective nations.
In Australia, the numerous indigenous nations and their tradition and the "Dreaming" are certainly so unique. When I think of Australia, I can't help but think of things like the Didgeridoo.
Over in New Zealand, I like how the Māori culture has greatly influenced the Kiwi culture. The Haka, the relatively high tolerance and togetherness of both the Māori and the others, and the usage of Māori greetings like "Kia Ora".
Compared to Canada and the US, Australia and New Zealand really stand out in this aspect!

As a daughter of a migrant parent this song makes me proud. It's even more touching because I'm overseas at the moment and totally makes me feel homesick. 😊
Spent time working overseas so know what it's like to be a homesick Aussie. There's nothing quite like being home, is there! :)
Is it just me or does homesickness affect Aussies the most? haha.
P.S Braeden stfu and you can leave the country.
Same
Being humbled by this beautiful song can put a lump in your throat.
I love this beautiful country. I love you Australia. Third generation and I respect all Australians. To the Aboriginal People I say salute and thanks. God bless
Played this at my daughter's wedding reception last month in honor of the 25 Aussies who came to the USA for the wedding. She married an Aussie. Very nice people who know how to party, by the way.
Even when you may now live 10,000 Miles away, you still are and I am still an Australian and it will always be the country that I love... Happy Australian Day, from the USA.. :)
Thank ya so much mate!
+Tony Hutton - Australians are hypocrites.
+Joyce Capewell And you are just a poor bugger.-
+Lazarus0357 this poor bugger is doing very well - and full of truth and been around in the 'real world' to witness the ongoing immoral shame of colonial Apartheid Australia - unlike you.

+Joyce Capewell Congrats! I'm doing prety well too, don't you worry about that. As for being around in the "real world", I've worked and lived in 8 countries, European and not, enough to realise that nowadays Aborigines have it prety good, better than other native races around the world.-
I recently had the privilege of hearing this song performed by the Bushwackers, led by Dobe Newton, one of the writers of this beautiful, poignant song. I had never heard it before. I am migrant, I've been here for 24 years. listening to him singing these incredible lyrics, tears welled up in my eyes. I have never felt more connected to this amazing land and all it's people. when a song can evoke that kind of emotion for your country, it definitely deserves to be considered a national anthem. I think an abridged version could be unbelievable. I can so picture this being sung in a stadium before a sporting event, with real passion and emotion. the current anthem unfortunately has none of that. this song is it for me. I can't believe that Rugby Australia chose to sing waltzing matilda before wallaby test matches instead of this song. in terms of evoking national pride I've never experienced anything even close to the emotion i feel for Australia when i hear this song.
Die Stimme von Judith Durham erschlägt mich seit den 60er Jahren. Unglaublich!
Everytime we sang this song in school assembly my eyes would well up with tears. There's an Aussie spirit in all of us.
If I was Australian, this song would bring me to tears. It is the most patriotic song I've seen from the big red continent. Blows their real anthem out of the water.
THIS SONG CAPTURES ALL OF US, IN UNIQUE VERSE AND WITH A UNIQUE POPULATION, WE ARE ALL AUSTRALIAN, NO MATTER WHERE WE CAME FROM.
Exactly. And if we weren't all different we would be bloody boring.
Australian from birth and havent been more grateful 😢❤
So grateful to be Australian after migrating to this beautiful country 40 years ago. Love this song!
We sung this at school today, I really wish this was our national anthem!
I'm not Australian but cry every time hearing this song about the history and nature of this country. This song should be the anthem!
My eyes are never dry hearing this song truly magnificent
MINE EITHER. VOTE NO. NO DIVISION.
If only this anthem and its sentiments were embraced by all people living in this wonderful country of ours. It is far more embracing than our present one will ever be.
Love this country - Best place ever
I forward that!

Thank you for your beautiful songs. RIP, Judith.
Three generations here. We came from English Irish migration by our brave ancestors in the eighteen hundreds. We love our sunburnt country ♥
I love Australians. When I was deployed to Iraq in the Army the Aussies ran the Air Traffic Control Tower in Baghdad and were always the best. I was eating MRE's 3 meals a day and the Aussies were grilling burgers and drinking Fosters! You folks are some good people! May the Gold and Green prosper!
Such a great song and video, it should be played Every Australia Day. 🐸
MaZEEZaM well it is
MaZEEZaM ,I love you white people ,as long as you love us
MaZEEZa
You have to be kidding me. This is awful. So embarrassing. Was it made in the 70's? This DOES NOT represent Australia in any shape or form. BS
you are loved and respected dude man :)
