Right that's what I was thinking because you could use it to heat a car in winter in an emergency like he says. I know people that keep them as a source of emergency light and heat in their home. He's actually heat a small bedroom pretty well. And then there's some of us that just prefer candlelight sometimes over anything else.

I LOVE my 3 candle UCO! It has lots of applications (probably not suitable for ultralight backpacking) and very well designed. I have added a chain and hook to the bail of the lantern so I can adjust the clearance from the top of my tent to the UCO. I use it a lot in the winter when it's not practical to use lights that rely on batteries. It produces much more light than the single lantern and produces enough heat to boil small amounts of water. I also use the single candle UCO but I seem to use the 3 candle version more often. Great product!

Al Nelson, I could not agree with you more. It is a fine product and I have used it many times in different situations, and it worked great. I am afraid W.W. is a little on the slow side, as candles do not produce carbon monoxide. Also if he is worried about burning a hole in the top of his tent, then a small chain, or a bent coat hanger would move it down low enough to solve the problem. As far as cost, Coleman fuel is more expensive than the candles per cost of burn time. Let`s be real here, W.W. does not like the three candle lantern, it does not fit his style, but he should not trash a very good product just because it does not fit his need.

I did a cost breakdown and determined that you can use paraffin wax in shot bottles for about $1.65 for three (I assume 100 uses from a shot bottle and amortize the cost in at 2 cents per use per bottle) and it supposedly burns hotter but I don't know how long. But, overall it's hard to swallow the initial price tag for what you get and you need to buy candles in bulk to get the price down to around $150. My biggest complaint is years ago I was camping and had a single candle unit hanging in my tent. I went to adjust it and missed what I reached for and grabbed the globe, which instantly burned my hand big time. I spent the rest of the night with my hand in a bowl of ice to bring the pain to a reasonable level. Blister city. Gotta watch what you are doing with these things.

I’ve used my uco 3 candle lantern for over 30 years. On the side of mount Baker and various other places in a 4 season tents Sierra Designs and North Face. Both have strap loops in the main tent body ceiling. To safely use any candle lantern in a tent simply use a lightweight hardware chain 18in. long and a couple S hooks. Connect the chain with (1) S hook to tent body and the other end to the lantern. Light and enjoy a safe warm tent. My handle is such that I remove one side of the hanger and slip the hanger through the chain and the replace the end on the handle back into the lantern body. Now you only need (1) S hook.

My father (retired Army SF) advised me that his worse night in the cold, he used two of these compact candles (not UCO but similar) and that was enough with Mil Spec issued gear (not as insulated as private sector gear). I bought one but I will order a second before I trek out into Plumas backcounty this winter with a Snugpak Scorpion tent. 2 or even 3 single candles still pack down smaller than 1 - UCO latern. Plus, 3 singles candles spread the light and the heat. Finding a way to have all three in a tent without knocking them over will be my main concern.

Or Hurricane Sandy where I remember people being without power for 8-9 consecutive days. Roads were impassible. Frozen food went bad in the supermarkets. Batteries only go so far. And there was nowhere to drive to, since the roads were covered with debris and the places you wanted to go to had no power, anyway. So, candle lanterns and fireplaces sound like a good thing. I have one 3-candle lantern and I'm thinking of giving a few for Xmas.

Like all good technicians would tell you about using a tool. Its not enough to have the tool ...you have to find a good and regular use on how to use it.
I have seen Carpenters and other technicians destroy their tools because they did not find a regular use.
As far as how much heat it can produce:
1 unscented candles typically burns at a steady rate of 0.1 g/min and producing heat at 80 W. If a candle produces 100 BTU, and you need 20 BTU/sq ft to heat a room, then 1 candle would heat a 5 sq ft room.
So these numbers give you a starting point.
I cannot think of a cheaper way to produce energy then using candle.
One of your most significant objections seems to be the price of candle.

Dude, you are just missing the point of this thing. People like candlelight dinners even though they have electric lights in their ceiling, right? Same idea, only for outdoors. Set one of these in the middle of your picnic table when you are out car camping, or hanging out on the deck with friends after dark. That is mainly what it is for - to create a nice atmosphere. Yeah, you can use it when the power goes out, and you can boil water (eventually) by putting a pot on top of it, but there are a lot better ways to do both of those things. If you were to run it constantly, it gets expensive, but how many car camping trips do you take a year?

I think it’s important to remember the physics and mathematics of it. When you say someone could boil water on it, it’s important to remember that we’re only talking about a small quantity of water. A candle simply doesn’t generate enough BTUs to boil much water at all.

So I think the issue is that you live and camp in an arctic or subarctic climate. Your complaints seem related to that. Here in south Texas, winter camping is much more comfortable and it’s a rare day when things freeze outside. I have this and it works great, I changed out the candles and made shot bottle burners, more heat and longer burn time. Also more light. It does get very hot along the top but that’s the point. I use a metal carabiner and chain with a deflector. It heats up a small tent, camper or car very well for about 10 hours using clean oil burners. Always crack a window but very little co. It could use a redesign so the heat is deflected out more. But it works great for small to medium size campers and tents with care.

Actually you can create oil lamps from alcohol bottles or other items that last longer and don't make wax waste and it IS a good cheap way for emergency heat especially in apartments with no fireplaces and the fact that you can also heat up food and water etc on it is an additional bonus. Have to disagree with you on this one though people in tents should keep what you say in mind. Take care.

1:30 Use 3 carabiners to hang it in your tent. Problem solved.
$3 for 9 hours of 5,000btu is a steal. There's literally nothing that can do that at this size and price. The next best option are the $80 little buddy heaters that are too big to carry and use propane tanks that are WAY more expensive and heavier than candles. After all that you're getting only 5 hours of 4,000btu for $5. Plus you have no stove top. Plus that heater costs double what the Candlelier costs. That's also the lightest and cheapest propane set up available... The deluxe Candlelier fits in a 10L pouch (with room to spare) on my 50L bag.

if there is no electricty, batteries will deplete and you will have nothing unless you have a solar battery option. this 3 candle heats and give light. it also will heat snow or water to purify. to get 9 hours at the cost of about $3.50 per (3) its hard to compete i think. i appreciate you comment about hanging the candelier too close to the top of anything. this is logical and like that you point it out. your title is click bait and i clicked on it (lol) and learned a little something but in general consider your comments narrow minded as there are so many pluses with this thing even though you are stuck on a few negatives that affect you but probably not others.

There is no way in hell that 3 candles produce 5000 BTUs. That’s as much as my Coleman heater, which can heat my whole living room during a Michigan winter power-outtage. A dozen candles couldn’t do that.

    • @pearll_abcdgarcia2906

No, it is more like 250 btu/candle so about 750 btu. Not sure who started the 5000 claim. That is the output of a 1,500 watt space heater.

Beware. I bought one and substituted little shot bottles with parrafin oil and wicks per another youtube. It was hanging on a chain in a shed, fortunately unlit. I accidentally bumped the bottom while moving a level and was shocked to see the bottom and all glued in bottles fall to the floor. I was sure I had twisted the ratchet bottom on properly, so I took a closer look and was shocked again to see that the so called locking mechanism was not interlocking, but only several small bumps of metal. Twisted past these bumps it is nevertheless very easy to just pull the lamp base straight off, or in my case bump the bottom and have it fall apart. Beware.

I absolutely love mine. You don't have to burn all the candles at the same time. I burn 2 for about an hour before bed time to warm up my 3 person tent and it's good to get me through the night in freezing conditions (your tent may vary ).Candles only cost about a buck a piece. Cheaper than gas canisters. As far as hanging it. There are a million obvious and easy fixes for the short handle problem. A little sturdy wire or even an old wire closet hanger bent into shape and problem solved. The product works 100% as it is supposed to. It's just not what you want or need.
