From '95 to 2001, Iced Earth was hitting on all cylinders, and I think they were putting out the best thrash metal out there. Alive in Athens is a monster live album that takes a listener through a lot of the best songs of their early to middle era. To my mind, they've never been as good since Matt Barlow, the lead singer, left the band. He returned for a while, but I don't know that they ever fully recaptured the magic. No disrespect to the newer singers, but that deep, potent voice will always be the sound of Iced Earth for me.
I saw them headline in Chicago in 2002 touring on their Horror Show release. Jag Panzer opened (w/ Chris Broderick) and In Flames, it was one hell of a show.
Dante's Inferno Birth of the Wicked Stormrider Path I Choose Ten Thousand Strong Tragedy and Triumph Vengeance is Mine When the Night Falls *Travel in Stygian* *A Question of Heaven* And much more supreme classics.. IE 💙
I saw them two times - first time in a small club in San Francisco (Jon Schaffer was a really cool guy) and the other time in LA during their Glorious Burden Tour.
Thanks for doing this one! You made my weekend! No need for words as your facial reactions said it all throughout the song haha. Not many are willing to take on long songs like these, so props to you! They have a new album coming out soon, can't wait!
Larry Tarnowski provided some eerie awesome playing of the guitar! Heavy song and ecclectic to say the least. A true epic live rendition of a great intricate song. Barlow at his peak!
fantastic to hear Ruben! :D speaking of epic journeys, if you're willing to test your limits on long-running tracks at the expense of discovering something even more epic, check out the following three (no reaction required, just for your own personal enjoyment as you'll see why ;) : 1. Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design (A sound-track to a never-made Swedish horror movie that is essentially one single track broken in to 61 segments running at 45 min), 2. Edge of Sanity - Crimson (a single 45-min long track), and 3. Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness (a single 1-hr track). I believe these will truly redefine the words "epic journey of a song" for you ;)
Your reactions to every alternation of the song were great ... I would suggest you to listen all the songs from ''Alive in Athens'' album ... This live album contains 31 of Iced Earth's best songs for all tastes and I think neither the ''studio version'', but also neither any other live version of these 31 songs are better than the performing in ''Alive in Athens''. This live album in Greece, in 1999... is a Fucking Masterpiece... and one of the best live albums of all time !!!!! Also... their album ''Horror show'' of 2001, is very good and my favorite songs from this album are ''Dracula'' and ''The Phantom Opera Ghost''... As for their new album of 2017, these days I can not get out of my mind the song "The Veil"...
Ruben, if you ever want to do another Iced Earth song, do consider 'A Question of Heaven' from the same show. It may not feel as epic as this, but it's by far the most emotional song I've heard! Matt's voice is just angelic on that track!
need to try more of these guys if you are missing stuff still at this point! I understand if you've devoured their entire discography numerous times over though but unless you are going with the audio of Alive in Athens of older songs - stick to studio versions!
Great reaction, amazing song, incredible that they play it live. Love this band as well, seen them live twice and never dissapointed Great long songs, the gettysburg trilogy by them and one by Blind Guardian, and then there was silence. The original and not the re-release
Hey man, listen Demons & Wizards, a project with Iced Earth's guitarist, Jon Schaffer and Blind Guardian's Singer, Hansi Kürsch, I think you will like. Listen Heaven Denies, Fiddler on the Green, My Last Sunrise, Crimson King, Dorian and Down Where I Am.
Another great song from this band? from this very live record? Travel In Stygian. A bit less epic but still awesome. Imo, one of the most underrated live record.
There's few bands that deserve a 10 out of 10, Iced Earth get an 10+ from me. This song alone is better than most bands entire catalogue but this is just one song from them.
Haha that look of disbelief at 10:36. Many of those moments in this song! Changing mood changing pace and it immerses you into the proper feel for the inferno Dante experienced.
LOOOL i was searching yesterday through Iced Earth videos to link you and thought "well Dantes Inferno is great but its so long aswell" and today you post this reaction Vid ;-) my browser history shows my search yesterday...its so funny, instant delivery so to speak :)
as for recommendations, heres another one of my Fav Songs from them (but they have soo many great Songs): "Travel in Stygian" from the same show as Dantes Inferno was. I`ve seen them live only once, Summer Metal Meetings 1996 along Gamma Ray, Running Wild and more Bands. Was awesome ;)
I've seen them live in Belgrade back in 2014. Here is suggestion: Ten thousand strong, The wolf, Iced Earth, The Hunter, Travel In Stygian, Pure evil... They have a lot of great songs, great band!!!
Great review. I'm glad you liked it. I've seen them live four times. Once with Barlow, twice with Owens, & once so far with Stu. Try the entire Alive in Athens album or Burnt Offerings album (very dark & heavy) . Some favorite songs - Travel in Stygian Pure Evil Something Wicked Trilogy Dracula A Question of Heaven Gettysburg Phantom Opera Ghost When the Night Falls Desert Rain Angels Holocaust Burnt Offerings
Try more songs from them. Coming Curse either live 1999 or 2008,Travel in Stygian live 1999,Dark Saga live 2008 or Burning Times live 2008. They are still touring with a different singer and have released a few songs from their new album. This is their best singer, his name is Matthew Barlow and he has another band called ashes of ares, which is good but nowhere near Iced Earth. They have an amazing discography and are criminally underrated. This song is considered their magnum opus along the song Melancholy, and rightfully so.The fast and galloppy rythms along dark and poetic lyrics is their trademark, and is a backbone to their style, along with kick ass vocals, this song does not show Matt Barlow's full vocal prowess.
Great band! And certainly a masterpiece! The divine comedy is my favorite book even when I am not a religious person. There are too many good songs to recommend from them, but try with Dracula. Greetings from Mexico!
Thank you for the review. I had the same reaction when a friend first introduced me to them,...I'm going to need some time to process what I just heard, I am a huge Thrash metal fan and I thought I knew it all....that said, they have become one of my favorite bands of all time....the whole Live In Athens Show is one of the best live performances you will ever see. The Barlow days are my favorite..other singers...meh
As i commented on this video i would recommend the 2013 version of Dante's Inferno of iced earth and i want your opinion which singer is better, i like Barlow better because his vocals are powerful hope to see ur reaction rock on Ruben!!!!!!
Dante's Inferno is definetely their masterpiece it is their ''Black Rose Immortal'' if you know what i mean they've got a lot of epics and it's so difficult to choose for start i'd say Raven Wing from their brand new album Incorruptible the official lyric video there is no live version of this song yet I think you're really gonna get into it!
Hey man,you should listen to the Burnt Offerings album of 1995 if you're a fan of vinyl this song takes up the entire fourth side of the record! Truly amazing album! If you're a fan of this song I'm sure you're gonna love it!!! ;)
I read Dante's Divine comedy at University. One messed up medieval view on religion. I'm pretty sure "Trapped under ice" by Metallica is based on the book. In the innermost circle of hell it was cold, not hot, and the worst sinners were incased in solid ice but still alive. Pretty crazy stuff
Ruben Buijs that's a tough question. I love 1984 as well as Animal Farm (almost prefer that one). Lord of the Rings, the Shining, IT, Shakespeare if you count that, hard to pick a favorite. (But then again I majored in Literature at University). That was a monetary mistake but it enriched my mind rather than my pocketbook 😉
Ruben Buijs thanks my friend. The last few years have been a bit out of my hands. Not to get on a long story, but I am the younger of two brothers. My brother moved 1000 miles away about 10 years ago now and around then my father was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. A few years ago he was getting worse and my long time girlfriend left me and I could no longer afford the rent on our apartment. I moved back home for what I thought would be a short while but have ended up being an inhome caregiver for my father the last 5 years. Sorry for the rant. Not trying to seem pathetic or feel sorry for myself. Sometimes the cards life deals are grim. Anyway, cheers my friend! 🍻🤘🏻🍻
yes u should have listen sooner, and when u was jong?it`s never to late buud xd,it`s getting real wild man.I`m 52 and know them for decades thaha, lucky me.Ihope u did listen the last 3 years to them,it`the best metal band EVER.I love this song even more with the years.Only pitty that Barlow is gone.Stu is gret to,but i am a Barlow fan.Still till this day i go see them whenever they come to belgium.See u at 9

Iced Earth is amazing and if i can recommend any song it would have to be "The trilogy" Prophecy, Birth of the Wicked, The Coming Curse. The story of the 3 is reflected in some of there later albums such as when Tim "The Reaper" Owens joins the band with "Ten Thousand Strong" which is also a really fun song but personally it was Matt's vocals that always torn at something in me.
I'm glad you get to experience Iced Fucking Earth for the first time! Matt Barlow's voice dude!
Matt fucking Barlow is a beast.
I love Stu, but yeah Barlow is king!
Iced Earth honestly has had 3 fantastic signers in Matt fucking Barlow, Tim 'Ripper' Owen, and Stu fucking Block!
Tiago Valcarenghi he did amazing when he was with Pyramaze
hi

His reaction at 12:00 is priceless.
If you have never heard them and this is your first song.... welcome to the fan club.
Iced Earth is the real deal.
No one had the balls to review this is song on UA-cam. Ruben you are awesome.
Jon Schaffer (rhythm guitarist) is one of my biggest influences as a guitar player. One of my favorite songs from Iced Earth.
Dante's Inferno
Birth of the Wicked
Stormrider
Path I Choose
Ten Thousand Strong
Tragedy and Triumph
Vengeance is Mine
When the Night Falls
*Travel in Stygian*
*A Question of Heaven*
And much more supreme classics..

I forgot how much of a fucking riff factory this song is. My gawd!!!!
Thank you for picking the correct version of the correct song
Iced Earth! The best live band on earth!
I saw them two times - first time in a small club in San Francisco (Jon Schaffer was a really cool guy) and the other time in LA during their Glorious Burden Tour.
On ICED Earth!!!
I would give my right hand to have Jon Schaffer's right hand. Noone playes riffs as fast and clean as he does. The riffmaster.
That's the reaction i was looking for. One of the most underrated song ever created.
I WAS THERE....hell yeahhhhhh....
Thanks for doing this one! You made my weekend! No need for words as your facial reactions said it all throughout the song haha. Not many are willing to take on long songs like these, so props to you! They have a new album coming out soon, can't wait!

That song is simply AMAZING!!! And Matt is DIVINE. Love your T-shirt, a greek metalhead

Iced Earth is a very good band. I saw them live in De Pul in Uden it was my first time but really great love ur reaction video's keep up the good work
"I want this song to be played at my funeral...;)" me too!!
best live performance ever!

Check out this personal favorite Iced Earth - Damien / Horror show tour 2002 (Philadelphia)
You did it Ruben! Hells yea! so glad you enjoyed it :D this song's such an epic journey! Jon Schaffer was probably the king of riffage back then ;)

Other amazing songs are When The Night Falls, Travel In Stygian, A Question Of Heaven, The Coming Curse ! Huge Iced Earth fan here ! 😀 cheers 🤘
@drealmerz7 z Alive In Athens is incredible ! But why are the first two albums tough to listen ?
@drealmerz7 z Do you mean the original versions? Because the production on the remasters is much better, those are also the ones I heard first
React to Iced Earth - Dracula Live (Metal Camp Open Air 2008) or the studio version :)
jcrosato Barlow butchered this one ^^
