Duncan Laurance was a vocal coach at Vocal Center. Who helped him get the most out of his voice. They teach a singing technique called Vocal Essence, which combines techniques from all singing methods and focuses on the essence of singing and what an individual singer needs. One of his backing vocalists you see on stage with him in the end is also Duncan's vocal coach at this event, Marcel Swerissen (an incredible singer who has his own youtube channel).
He wrote this song himself, with inputs from the Swedish composer and producer Joel Sjöö and Dutch producer Wouter Hardy. Inspired by the death of a very close friend, who was still in love with the man that left her. She kept loving him until the moment she died at a very young age.
The blonde woman joining Duncan on stage is Ilse DeLange. She was part of The Common Linnets, the runner-up at Eurovision 2014. She was Duncans vocal coach during The Voice Of Holland and was now part of his support team. Duncan wrote Arcade himself, with the help of a producer, and it was a real "pain in the ass". It took about 2 years before they finished the song. He dedicated the song to a loved one who died and couldn't let go of a love that was lost.
Duncan ended in 8th place in the voice of Holland, if you were wondering. He did well and was on team Ilse, who was 2nd on eurovision 2014. Trijntje was sent in 2015, she didn't even qualify. That's ironic since she was a coach and didn't turn for duncan.
He wrote this song during my study at the Rock Academy. It’s a story about a dear person who he lost at a young age. He always had a hard time dealing with this los. She had the love of her life but suddenly wasn’t there anymore. And until the end she had the hope that her loved one would come back before she died. But he didn't. And that hope is what he put in this song.
Breaking down a song minutes after someone wins the biggest song contest on the planet, and is filled to the brink with emotions, incredible happiness as well as adrenaline is perhaps not the best moment to judge someone's singing abilities that you still liked it is testament to his vocal skills under perhaps the greatest pressure.one can feel. After all 200 million people are watching and seeing how "often" the Netherlands has won the contest will most likely be repeated locally for the next 40 years or so.
We finally won again after 44 years and I couldn’t be more proud. I also find it so funny how Duncan wasn’t very famous and won and the most famous Dutch artists lost every year
Many thanks for the detailed explanation! Love the song and love your professional analysis of the song.❤️ Also the term explanation, which i didn't know! I am dutch and i am so proud and in fact i live very near where he grew up!
I’d love if you sometimes reacted to some italian music! Being italian myself, paradoxically I don’t like much from here but there’s some good stuff to be heard, too! ❤️
I loved this performance the best out of them all. And its also the story behind the song that I think only we Dutch people know. He actually wrote this song years ago, not even for the song contest, when he was still in College. Abd its about a friend of his who died. and she died still heartbroken and yet in love with the man that left her. Her death and story affected him alot and so he wrote a song about. So the emotion hes showing. I think he felt reliefed that someting good came out of her story and like she was heard. Through him.
He was very emotional during this performance, which is very logical since he won and probably felt really close to his friend in that moment. This performance is emotional in a different way as the first one, you’ll have chills from the very first note and you should definitely watch and react to that one!☺️ I’m very proud of my country! Let’s just pray they don’t let Jan and Cornald present it next year lmao.

He studied at the Rock Academy in Tilburg (the Netherlands). He is a singer, piano player, song writer .... and vocal coach. And yes he wrote this song himself ;)
Yes, he did write it himself. Also, I like the press conference afterwards where he was asked to compare the two times he sang the song that night and he explained how the first time he gave it his all and it was his best yet, but then about this one he said "the second time.... not so good"
He was a vocal coach at Vocal Center. Who helped him get the most out of his voice. They teach a singing technique called Vocal Essence, which combines techniques from all singing methods. As all the reactions below already state, this was after he's won. The initial preformance is smaller, he plays the piano and beautiful lighting. But... he indeed wrote this song, lyrics and music and it is a story about a loved one he lost. You should look at the original preformance, it is beautiful.
Yes, this lovely guy wrote this song. His friend died, she was sick and waited for her (ex)boyfriend to come visit her before she would die. But he never did. So...a sad true story. The backing vocals that you hear were also done by Duncan Laurence himself. Every time I hear this song I get goosebumps !

I've never been this proud to be from the Netherlands. I saw him winning on TV, he deserved it
OMG! 2 of the greatest things ever! You bathing in shivers (I'm really trying to not sound creepy there), and Graham Norton is ABSOLUTELY my favorite!
Your expressive and delightful reaction has piqued my interest. I will have to search Eurovision to see this and the other acts.
Thank you again for the burst of joy and have a most lovely day!
Love your explanatory breakdowns! Excellent!
I’m so freakin proud to be from The Netherlands omg. I screamed my lungs out at the final omg
As all the reactions below already state, this was after he's won. The initial preformance is smaller, he plays the piano and beautiful lighting. But... he indeed wrote this song, lyrics and music and it is a story about a loved one he lost. You should look at the original preformance, it is beautiful.
This was after winning, you can hear the emotion in his voice...i nearly cried 💖
Have waited for this video :)
Albania was goooooooood! Jonida Maliqui and her backing vocalists were on point!
Karin Seregni in the final she was spot on i enjoyed it so much
Thanks to Duncan, we Dutch feel like we've won the world championship singing!
He wrote this song when he was still studying in Tilburg♥️♥️ so proud to be Dutch 🇳🇱❤️
Goosebumps all over the place. Fantastic singing won,!! At last.
when he changes the melody it gets me every time
Thank you for the review and yes it's almost time. The Eurovision here in The Netherlands (Rotterdam) lets make it a nice one!!!
Finally a country who took this seriously and refused to scrape the camp bottom of the barrel and actually sent a quality singer and songwriter. I almost think Eurovision doesn’t deserve this
And now I want you to react to all the songs or something like that :D This is the first video I’ve watched from you and I’m already loving your channel
Thank you so much
This is the kind of person that should be sitting in jury.
it is about a friend who died at a young age. She remained in love until the last time with the man who had left her ", ♥️♥️
He wrote this himself 😍 proud of him, I hear this all time on my school (I live in the Netherlands)
He wrote this song years ago on the rock academy. A good friend died and this is a song about it.
Yes, he wrote this song by himself🍀greetings from The Netherlands 😘
Please can you react to Kate Miller Heidke Zero Gravity Eurovision 2019 Performance Grand Final her song IS about her depression
I think she was the best vocally on the night. She's such a great singer with a unique voice, and while singing 20ft in the air!
