  • Maintenance trimming an overgrown portulacaria afra bonsai forest. This forest was gifted to me by my good friend Bob in 2016 and I've been working on it since (5 years). Hope you enjoy!

My favorite new channel I have found. My brother left a jade plant at my house before he deployed to the military and I didn't know what to do with it and it just kept growing then I found bonsai and I now have 10 or so of them all in the small 1 to 2 year old range and this channel has been a great resource on what to do with them. Cheers!

Lol! You pruned more off than you received from your friend in the first place! How nice to have such a concrete memorial of your friendship and still more bits to pass along to a widening network.

Gilbert, nice work. I'm a Port afra enthusiast also and have many forests ranging from small ones like this, to ones so large they're too big to move. I really like this one. My only suggestion: Look front-on at the composition, and just to the right of the main tree, there's a small 'Y' shaped tree in the back which distracts the eye. I would replace it with a single stemmed tree that's more in keeping with the rest of the forest.

Love this video! Excellent info! I’m just getting started in Jade and can use all the info I can get. Love the way you explain everything! What do you fertilize with, how much and how often? I’m hearing that Jade doesn’t need lots of water. Not that often. Any tips and tricks you can pass along would be helpful, and appreciated! This forest you just created is amazingly cool!

Just started planting from cuttings 2 years ago just using potting soil.
Then your channel pop up two weeks ago and im a big fan already.
So I bought some turface and landscaping mix for repotting
My question now is how often do I need to water them and fertilize them as well
    Thanks

Hi. My twin brother and I are looking to start trying bonsai for the first time. After watching your videos I decided I want to try and do a jade forest like you. What are your recommendations and steps for me to take to create something like what you have? I haven’t been able to find a place that sells a large jade plant to be able to create multiple branch cuttings to make the forest so what can I do? Also where can I find inexpensive bonsai pots for forest type bonsai? I mainly been able to find regular size pots for individual plants but not big and shallow for a forest.

Anything works for the port. afra. If you have long rain seasons, plant in a very free draining soil with lots of aggregate. If you have very warm long summers and cant water everyday, use something with a bit more organic matter and a substrate that holds back moisture. It really does depend on your climate. That being said, these little guys love lots of air in their roots and cane take drying out really well.

If the tree has healthy roots, a high Nitrogen fertilizer can be used to speed up growth. You can also use a regular regiment of slow release fertilizers over the entire growing season. The more you cut, the more they grow!

If you want a large bonsai, plant your cuttings in a very big container or in the garden. Let it grow for a few years until you are happy with the size, then dig it out of the ground saving as much roots as you can, and cut the top back to start your bonsai. First grow the trunk, then grow the branches.
