  • My friend Mike visited (despite what California's governor wants) and we took the all original, completely unrestored 1929 Ford Model A fordor sedan for a ride on the most gorgeous Saturday afternoon you ever saw.
    Mike had a little trouble, but towards the end, he did much better. Hey guys and gals, they're only original ONCE! Keeping a preservation class antique car going is a lot harder than a restored one. But, so much more worth it.

    i got my new 31 home the other day and first lesson i learned was how not to give it gas before starting. i flooded it. then burned out starter. 350 dollar mistake but hey, i learned. now if it hasnt started in about 5 seconds i will give starter a break to cool off then try it again. gotta wait till may 5 for it to arrive though. great videos. when mines tucked comfortably in my garage i enjoy watching others on the road. i guess youtube is good for something. lol. great video.

    One other thing. You could tie an elastic band around that windshield wiper arm and loop it around the wiper motor to prevent the arm from wandering around in the breeze. That's what I did until I found a way to put more tension on the arm.

    • @ModelA

    This makes me wish I had an opportunity to try driving a similar model A. I've never driven anything with a non-synchronous transmission. I've only driven a three speed once, briefly. It was a '60s Dodge van with three on the tree.

    I'm understanding that the friend owns a Model A, but he's driving as though he's never driven one. I don't understand how the shift lever being positioned a couple of inches more forward in Paul's car could result in overall poor operating skills. His seemingly unfamiliarity and overall awkward operation made me nervous. Maybe the poor guy has a motor-skills dexterity issue. (Motor Skills as in a bodily function involving the precise movement of muscles, not relating to engines) Or, maybe he's had a stroke. What I got out of this video is that it proves Paul is a good man because I wouldn't let this guy drive any of my car's.

      Many restored Model As on UA-cam are described by their owners "scary" past 45 MPH. I don't know why, it just is. Also, many Model A owners do not adjust the mechanical brakes properly and they do not stop well.

Said "theres hardly anything in here this feels unsafe" lol. These people probably get into 100 year old cars and expect them to drive as smoothe and straight as more modern cars and they just never will be. Great to see that A on the road except for a couple of things. The driver didn't advance the spark lever at all. I'm surprised the engine didn't overheat. And he was wearing one of those stupid masks. If they're so damned important then why doesn't the government buy them for us? You'll need Depends underwear before you need a face mask.

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  4 роки тому

      Thank you, Jim. The spark advance lever was at the 1/2 way point when he was in the parking lot and it was at the 3/4 position when driving on the neighborhood roads. When he was on the highway, it was about at full advance. Perhaps him actually moving the lever was part of the boring parts edited out. This engine never overheats.

    • @jimervin387
      @jimervin387 4 роки тому

      I think I would know an advanced Model A spark lever when I see one, at least on my '30 A. And that lever sure didn't look advanced to me. If it was, that's an important part which you shouldn't have edited out.

    • @ModelA
      @ModelA  4 роки тому

      Since this was not a "how to" video, when editing I didn't pay any attention to the how or why of the driving, only the fact that he was. I probably know my car better than anyone, and if the spark was not advanced enough or too much, I would have certainly corrected it.
