  • The Cessna L-19/O-1 Bird Dog was a liaison and observation aircraft. It was the first all-metal fixed-wing aircraft ordered for and by the United States Army since the U.S. Army Air Forces separated from the Army in 1947, becoming its own branch of service, the United States Air Force. The Bird Dog had a lengthy career in the U.S. military, as well as in other countries.

That’s awesome! He makes it look so easy. Most people wouldn’t appreciate the skill this pilot demonstrates.

I worked on the bird dog in 1968 in. Phu loi Vietnam . . It's a super airplane, mechanics and I rebuilt more than one that was severely damaged .. pilots would take finished machine on test flight and do extreme climes and dives with smoke on wing mounts..
Ours carried m-60 machine gun on one wing and circular rocket pod on other side , think max 4 rockets,, not sure how many gun rounds carried. Sighting was by an x grease penciled on windshield.. watching this video brought back great memories, many thanks. Bill

What unit were you with and when? I worked with the 74th recon airplane company at Phu Lou I never saw any M60 on an airplane or a pod of four rockets with the 74th. 1967-1968.

POV: You're looking for Charlie but your eye sight is absolutely tragic and your Co-Pilot traded your glasses for a pack of smokes.

As a pilot I have to respect the skills while also questioning the common sense of flying or allowing spectators that close. There is a reason the FAA has minimum safe distances from the ground and spectators.
