rhiannon giddens is opera trained but she wanted to go back and sing songs from long a go. i've heard her live once and the quality and strength of her voice simply overwhelmed me...cant put it any other way. she is a wonderful talent
Rhiannon is a grammy winning artist, author, and actress. She is quite versed in various musical styles and is very knowledgeable about early folk music. She is quite the musician and performer.
Rhiannon Giddens is magnificent! She’s incredibly versatile, and she can’t really be put in one box or another. Others have mentioned the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and her work with Our Native Daughters is also stellar. I especially love their song Black Myself which features the powerful voice of Amythyst Kiah. (Amythyst also made a single of it, which is stunning. You might like it a lot, Asia. Very deep and strong.)
So many to recommend from her!! I honestly wouldn't have started with this particular song, unless you are really into folk music. Others I prefer: Build a House (featuring Yo-Yo Ma), Come Love Come, Better Get it Right the First Time. Anything on her Freedom Highway album is fabulous
Y'all should also check her out from when she was with Carolina Chocolate Drops. "Cornbread and Butterbeans" is a great song by them. I was fortunate to see them live. Great show
Rhiannon is a musical scholar x that wasn't yodeling. Listen to her Patsy Cline covers x your opinion will come around. Try Wayfaring Stranger. She's one of the great voices x it would be a shame to list her as a yodeler.
I play Birmingham Sunday every September 15th…. Song is about the Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham Alabama in 1963…. Rhiannon’s version is haunting… she does not do just folksie stuff…. There is also a video of her doing Wayfaring Stranger in a Irish Church… her playing banjo and accompanied by an accordion…. Stunning
The "instrument" the man is playing is the BONES! As in... actual bones lol. The oldest known instrument to man... and they INCREDIBLY difficult to play (hence looking kinda goofy while doing it).
All i can add to what others have said is when i started playing the mandolin i thought i could go to my grave happy if i could gain her approval with my playing. The rest have said it all. But I'll reiterate, She is one of the greats of our time of any genre. That is a Resonator mandolin. Don't see many of them.
Wife here..., Ms.Asia ❤ your shirt!!!...Ok.., there's several original BLUEGRASS songs I ABSOLUTELY ADORE..."RUBY "is one of them...This is an AMAZING cover..!!! I really 👍like it!!..That voice..WOW!!!..Liking the Folky Roots" Terminology!!!...Traditionally Mandolins were always acoustic Ms.Asia..especially in the BLUEGRASS genera🥰
think he's playing the spoons - she's amazing, she's like a cross between alot of styles like Bluegrass, Americana, Country...You should check out Otis Taylor - Blue Rain in Africa....he's amazing
I think she might be one of the best modern singers that most people don't know about. I've been randomly checking for reactions to her for a couple years now, and you two are the only popular reaction channel that has reacted to her. I first sought her out after playing the Red Dead Redemption 2 video game. She did a few of the tracks in that game and her voice just astounded me every time.
Love Her ! She’s from my town Greensboro NC. Check out hit ‘em up style by the Carolina Chocolate Drop which was her first band that ended up winning a Grammy before they broke up .
Thank you, thank you, thank you🎶🎶🎶🖤🎶🎶🎶. This is just a small taste of her , she can do just about everything. She plays guitar and fiddle too The wooden things are a form of “spoons”. I Believe this song was written in the 40s by Cousin Emmy
This version of Ruby is really along the lines of today's amazing Blue Grass. Blue Grass is an amazing art form filled with this type of amazing musicianship. I do t think you can really label Rhiannon as she's all over the place in her influences. Many people were surprised years ago when David Lee Roth participated in. Blue Grass recording of Van Halen Hits. Ioved the recording as the musicianship was stellar paying tribute to the music if Ban Halen but many disliked it as purebred Rock fans. To me. It's always interesting to hear other musicians interpret and pay tribute to other artists as we are all influenced by various artists in music especially musicians. You should check out that Van Halen Blue Grass recording.
Rhiannon has been made artistic director of YoYo Ma's Silkroad Ensemble you should should check out the 2 of them on Build a House also her rendition of Wayfaring Stranger is 2nd to none. The precession instrument you see is referred to as bones
This is Piedmont style blues, using. folk instrumentation. The banjo is an African instrument and this contributed to American Country Music. The bones, the mandolin...This style contributed to Bill Monroe's Bluegrass .
Many people think the banjo is a “white hillbilly” bluegrass instrument, they don’t realize it actually is a black instrument, it came here from Africa with slaves. She is an incredibly talented lady, good stuff!
Great artist and historian she is. Great reaction and introduction to her unique genre. Read her history. Just a teaser: the banjo is an African instrument.
The odd rhythm instrument he’s playing is bones. Two sets of rib bones clacked together to make to make noise. A very old traditional percussion instrument.
Listen to her do Patsy Cline or Irish Folk. The Woman got her Master's x a Rockefeller Grant to Study x elaborate on, African American Folk. The Banjo she plays is as those enslaved would've played.
Good song, talented band and singer! How rude was Asia and detached from this “reaction” to a Rhiannon Giddens song - i cannot believe Asia applied chap stick. Clearly BJ appreciated this song, knew what instruments were.
Those instruments are nothing but rib bones. Back when we had nothing you made music with sticks, bones, spoons, strings of fence wire tied to a nail on your back porch.
I really approve of what Rhiannon Giddens does, but ... her singing doesn't move me, particularly; she's still too close to her formal training for my taste ... think I'm kinda with Asia here ....
rhiannon giddens is opera trained but she wanted to go back and sing songs from long a go. i've heard her live once and the quality and strength of her voice simply overwhelmed me...cant put it any other way. she is a wonderful talent

This amazing woman can sing anything. If you want a real treat, check out her version of "St. James Infirmary Blues," with Tom Jones.
Another reactor called it "hillbilly soul."

She's a wonderful singer, songwriter & musician.
An amazingly talented musician. You should hear here sing Celtic music too.
Y'all should also check her out from when she was with Carolina Chocolate Drops. "Cornbread and Butterbeans" is a great song by them. I was fortunate to see them live. Great show
I remember Rhiannon from the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Very good band.
Rhiannon is a musical scholar x that wasn't yodeling. Listen to her Patsy Cline covers x your opinion will come around. Try Wayfaring Stranger. She's one of the great voices x it would be a shame to list her as a yodeler.
She is an incredible vocalist!
Rhiannon has been America's best kept secret for years!
Opened a box here guys. She is one of the most talented and versatile musicians at the moment. Seen her three times now and she is a force of nature.
I play Birmingham Sunday every September 15th…. Song is about the Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham Alabama in 1963…. Rhiannon’s version is haunting… she does not do just folksie stuff…. Look up some of the tunes she and her band did with The Chieftains !

What a great song, with the most famous bluegrass version by the Osborne Brothers.
She was a member of the Roots group The Carolina Chocolate Drops. She an American treasure for sure. Try another member of the CCD. Leyla mcCalls.
Rhiannon is an accomplished player of the very rare Fretless Banjo. There are only a handful of Fretless Banjos in the world.
She is amazing the CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS have a song called corn bread and butterbeans I love it and sing it to my wife lol! She sang for them .
This is Piedmont style blues, using. folk instrumentation. The banjo is an African instrument and this contributed to American Country Music. The bones, the mandolin...This style contributed to Bill Monroe's Bluegrass .

You should listen to her song Julie. It's pretty powerful. Lots of good stuff.

@Lois Rogers, the gentleman is playing what mountain folk called playing the spoons. You should check out the Spoon Lady on youtube.
@@patriciakeith6755 thanks Patricia
The concept is similar to spoons but they're actually called bones and were originally made of animal bones: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bones_(instrument)
I really approve of what Rhiannon Giddens does, but ... her singing doesn't move me, particularly; she's still too close to her formal training for my taste ... think I'm kinda with Asia here ....
Down home banjo picking hotness! Boy that jam had some smoke coming off it!! 🔥
