4 Noggins sells CH in bulk so I bought 4 ounces…It was so overly cased that it left an after taste in my mouth which I resolved by making a batch of 2 parts Ch and 1 part VELVET…This is my everyday smoke and SO SO SATISFYING..Has that codger room and beard note that reminds me of my grandfather.
Forty plus years into it. Never met a Codger blend i didn’t like. I have twelve okay factory briars, but, the new Carter Hall in M.M. Legend (no filter) is boss of my small world. Cheers from the South Carolina Lowcountry (September 2024) and, yes I do English in the winter.
Now you have me interested in trying some of the new versions of these old blends. I have them all but just the older versions. Very true though, don't be afraid to stock up due to availability, change or price.
There is a difference for sure. I thought the new had a chemical taste but after decanting into a non airtight glass container it dissipated. So it's certainly the humectant and or topping. I have grown to enjoy it now, I'm used to it. The old prince albert had a bad chemical taste and the new doesn't. I just thought the new ch tub smelled like bourbon laced chewing tobacco with a hint of cheap ryo burley lol. The bourbon is really obvious. I don't have any left of the old usa pouches to side by side sadly. I'm glad I didn't give up on the new stuff because it's really good after airing out. I agree with ya on codger blends my main smokes are PA CH and 5 bros, I mix the bros w either the other. Thanks for the vid.
The changes in the coatings are subtle but noticeable. The older version was a little richer in cocoa sweetness, which I am okay with that difference. But I think the new version is lacking in that wonderful natural Burley leaf sweet sourness that I love, which is a bummer. Interesting note on the moisture and your prognosis seems logical. Also, one that I have found that hits the same mark is H&H's Chatham Manor.
The box was my first CH and it was great in my cobs, the tubs were a little different but i enjoy it a lot! I have been trying to make time to get back in the YTPC ao its so good to see you Pat! We're in Anchorage now and looking to buy somewhere in the quieter places out of the city but juat been busy with all the fieldwork for work and then wrangling the little one haha. Hope all is well, smoke something good!
I had a tub 7oz tub of SWR, from SP, in mid-Feb. 2024, and I returned it for credit. It was so strongly sour and bitter, both in smell and taste, that it wrecked my taste for two days after just one and a partial bowl of it. And then I did begin to notice all of the Codger/OTC blends acquired by STG, that I had gathered since starting in Jan. 2024, have the same hint of vinegar in them. And so I find Carter Hall to be the only Codger blend I enjoy. I threw out my tubs of Paladin, Velvet, Granger, and pouches of Capt. Black and Borkum Riff; both were the original blends. All of which I should've also returned. But I smoked these before the 'SWR-vinegar blend' and just thought "I don't like these at all." Those I threw out didn't have the vinegar smell as much, but the taste of vinegar was there for me.
Yep. I find with the other STG blends if you let them air out that essence dies away pretty quick. Not SWR Regular though. I swear they use vinegar as a topping. It’s strong. Makes me sad.
@@PaladinPiper I should've done so, tried drying, with all those I tossed out...to give them a chance at least. SWR though....🥴 yes, is quite potent. Not sure if this was an issue that could be corrected. I phoned SP, regarding the SWR before returning it, and they said they are aware of the issue and are crediting buyers. What I don't understand is why they continue selling it...knowing the vinegar is too strongly applied in it. I was sad to try all of those blends I was aware of, for all those years prior to me picking up piping, to discover STG owned them all. And how displeased I was after being excited to try them all. I commented on them all, on SP reviews, and remarked "I don't think STG is doing the Codger/OTC blends, they've acquired, any favors. But for not having tried them prior to their acquisition by STG, I couldn't know. I'll likely avoid buying tubs again...and might try a pouch of all I tossed, except for the SWR, and give them a good drying and retry. BTW, looking forward to the upcoming "Basic Codger Stuff."
Tubs still available, bought 1 today. Love it. $40ish online. Bought at mom and pop for $50. Yes I got ripped off but I make decent money and don’t mind local shop profiting
@@Ram-dq1gq I agree but it's hard to ask some one to lie. I have had people send me small amounts of tobacco from the US and, lets say, gave a different description of the contents in the parcel. Without me even asking.
Try the Milan’s “Our Prince Albert,” “our Carter Hall,” “our Kentucky Club,” and “our London Dock.” I think you will be satisfied, especially with their PA.
Man. I loved CH when I bought my first box. So I bought a tub and couldn't taste anything. I thought my tastes were. Canging, now I'm wondering if it was the different process.
Ok…I had some old CH (that came from a box) again last night sitting in front of the campfire. I enjoyed it & it was decent, yet it was unremarkable. If I smoked my pipe all day long or frequently, I think it would be a decent all-day smoke. I have a pipe so infrequently, though, that I’d rather smoke something that I really like! So I probably wouldn’t reach for CH regularly, but CH is a good one to have stashed away. I may try the new stuff, too, just to see how it is.
I’m still on the hunt for great aros. Super flavored. Not much luck. My palate is not good at all. I watch all the reviews & hear all the stuff everybody says they can taste but me….nada. Got any favorites to suggest? 👍😃☀️🌵
I very much liked the old Carter Hall from about 20 years ago. Got an ounce of the new stuff from 4Noggins and thought it was horrible. No sweetness whatsoever. And no taste. You are absolutely right: find something you like -- stock up on it. You won't regret it.
Interesting video showing the differences. Too bad they got rid of the small ones because I certainly wouldn't buy a big can without trying. It's beyond my understanding why all the codgers can't be made in America anymore. I'm hoping the heavy vinegar SWR was a mistake. I haven't noticed it on the pouches I've had, including the from you, but I do like vinegar.
Your impression of the new CH vs old is similar to what I get but I prefer the old - the chocolate. They can use glycerin as a humectant as well as PG with the added benefit of a touch more sweetness than PG.
Great video, I’m smoking some codger corner(old stock) as I watch this. I was wondering if you have mixed any up with the new H&H and SWR. Maybe would be a good video. Have a great holiday weekend😊.
I agree the old CH is sweeter and the cocoa in not as pronounced in the new stuff. I also think there is more Black Cavendish in the old version. That’s for sharing Pat. Happy smokes
Sounds like i'll have to get myself some of the new stuff and give it a go if it's PaladinPiper approved. 😉 You were talking about how the Danes are using vinegar as a humectant in the codger blends they are now manufacturing. I made a few videos recently talking about how the SWR tin i recently purchased was basically unsmokable, the vinegar smell and taste was so overwhelmingly overpowering. I thought the tobacco was off-gassing ammonia it was so strong. After stoving it a few times and airing it out ALOT it seems to be smokeable now. Maybe there was a batch that had the "vinegar humectant applicator nozzle" stuck open for a bit too long, and basically turned it into picked tobacco! lol Anyways thanks for the insight my friend, I had no idea they were actually using vinegar in their recipe...that explains alot. I most certainly will not be buying anymore SWR if this is just how it is made now. Cheers! -Andre
Vinegar nozzle stuck! That’s a great way of putting it!!!!! Yeah I don’t mind subtle changes in blends, after all it’s a natural product but when they go and do some random craziness like that! 🤢 Very off putting.

Never had Carter Hall, but I’ve noticed the difference in Prince Albert, the stuff in the older pouches was definitely sweeter and nuttier then the new tubs… I definitely prefer the older PA, but here we go - things aren’t the same anymore! Enjoy your smokes!
Love some CH. I smoked a bowl in a Medico while watching this. Lol I am very thankful that some scoundrel loaded me up on it 3-4 years ago. Btw…I am not interested in your shorts. That’s just disturbing!
Ive always had a strange relationship with carter hall. Id always smoke a few pouches during the summer but eventually it would become cloying and i just didn't want it. Haven't tried the new stuff. I opened another 7oz tub of sir walt after finishing my last one. Holy crap! This has even more vinegar. Its unsmokable. They screwed something up bad. Its 💩. I watch pat mac also. I'll be curious to see another pat doing basic codger stuff.
The new Carter Hall is one of my favorites!
