    Banging video. I was a kid in 2000s Britain and while all this flew over my head, I definitely had a very clear vision of what a 'chav' was and that they were bad - mainly cause my middle-class family would happily throw it out all the time. Kyle is the lowest of the low.

    Many years ago, I got a call from a producer of the Jeremy Kyle show. A former friend of mine who I was forced to cut out of my life because of her mental illness and unstable personality had called the show claiming that she was pregnant with my baby and that I had abandoned her. I was being invited on to take a lie detector And give my side of the story. No way on gods earth was I going to degrade and humiliate myself like that and I made sure to tell the producer that. But they were relentless, they just would not take no for an answer. They pushed and pushed trying to get me to change my mind. Even when I hung up on them multiple different producers kept calling for days. I would block one number, but they would call on another. It was only when I threatened to report them for harassment and that I had the logs of every time they had called they finally stopped. This despicable show should never have been on television in the first place.

      Thank you for sharing this story. I wish I could say I am surprised, but it's clearly another example of the callous nature they had in harassing and abusing people for entertainment.
      It shouldn't have been on TV, and Kyle (alongside the producers) should not be working in the industry now.

    Damn good video, so thank you. The class obsession in this country is being kept alive and well, it's hard to accept and depressing that it's only getting worse. As a working class person I've never felt the need to behave accordingly because of that, we really do beat the individuality out of each other. Sad. @DrNewVeg4s Sitcoms like The League of Gentlemen portray a more dark world that isn't close to reality. But that's delivered more intelligently by making us feel for the characters (especially Season 3). And Little Britain copied from most of this.

    Good video but I could not disagree more about little Britain. The working class do not care and love the show. We welcome fun being made of us and any fictional comedy show should be left to make us laugh and make fun of anyone and everyone. The only people that seem to care is content creators who make videos about it

    • @DrNewVeg4s
      @DrNewVeg4s  2 дні тому +1

      I think the point has slightly been missed. Little Britain was beloved at the time, I said that in the video. It’s playing off of stereotypes that we see in daily life (often comedy is good when it gets it right). The problem is, the narrative around the stereotypes were the most disadvantaged or excluded in society. It set the stage to morph into reality with the “reality shows” that would appear only a year later.
      I didn’t say the working-class didn’t enjoy it, but it did emphasise negative stereotypes that reality shows then capitalised on.
      Edit: Little Britain was not the only one to do this, but it was the most successful so it’s a good case study to use.

    Good video, I was born in 1990, so very much grew up in the early 2000s, I'm also very working class, and looking back at the 2000s reminds me how much this country hates the working class, but I feel it's actually gotten worse since then, they are just more subtle about it.

I remember all the classism and I think some racism sometimes, it’s been a while. glad to see people talking about this show in hindsight instead of just brushing it off because ‘it was a product of the time’ and whatnot.

      No, it’s a lovely comment and good analysis. I remember it too. I am one of those people where I don’t “conventionally” sound working-class, but my dad was a bus driver and my mum a council worker. We grew up in poverty. Of course, people didn’t stigmatise me and I was lucky in that sense. I saw it for myself and Kyle contributed to those antagonisms. Racism played a part as well. It might be something to explore more in a future video.

    I have a story to tell about my bad experience in special needs primary school in the early 2000s but I’ll save that for another comment. Honestly though why can’t they make sitcoms and fictional shows about good people and entertaining subjects Britain use to make great sci fi shows and car chase/action shows. countries like Brazil have female dancers on at the weekend and Japan has no reality tv. I would give anything just to have good people on British tv for once 😢 everything doesn’t have to be positive that’s what drives a fictional shows plot. I really miss shows like captain scarlet and the likes. we need some more adult cartoons here in Britain we made a few in the 90s. • @DrNewVeg4s
      @DrNewVeg4s  День тому

      It's interesting. I think because the characters are so "out there" and the world is fantastical (and morbid), it is able to escape reality and pose less of a problem. The jokes often come out of Pauline's expense and dictates power over the people that don't have have jobs. The jokes are not merely "your fat".
      That being said, you will still have an upper-class Mark Gatiss, who is entirely privileged playing the stereotype of a working-class person. I do think League of Gentlemen also suffers from the same problem at times, but the focus on the characters running the job seeker workshop and the morbidness of the world softens the blow (a bit).
      TL;DR: Better, writing, better characters and more nuance in the story lessens the portrayal of stereotypes!

    Obviously, teenage years 15/16 you start working and actually understanding how the world works, these TV companies sole aim was to shame and exploit these people on the doll for cheap labour and the reality is they’ve grown up in a rough area and making do with their limited options.

    Do you not think that some people deserve to be criticised? Shows like Jeremy Kyle weren’t picking on the working class. They were making fun of people on benefits that could easily work, but chose not to. I understand if you have a disability that doesn’t allow you to work, but the majority of people on JK could work, but were lazy and they relished in their laziness. They also spoke like idiots, had horrible attitudes and took very little pride in their appearances. I think it’s funny how the exact same people who were laughing at the guests on the show are now the same people ranting about how cruel it was to laugh at these people. Just a bunch of social justice warriors coming to the rescue again. I grew up working class, and all my friends did too, but none of us acted like the people who appeared as guests on the Jeremy Kyle Show. I don’t think the show was demonising the working class, but I think they were demonising people with bad mouths and bad attitudes who would rather scrounge off the government than work. They just happened to be working class. As I said, I know nobody that is working class that acts like the guests on JK. These people are not victims. They went on the show for attention and they got it. Nobody forced them on that stage

    • @DrNewVeg4s
      @DrNewVeg4s  2 дні тому +6

      I think the allegations presented in the video about what was happening on JK speaks for itself. The media are very good at trying to create a narrative, a narrative which I’m afraid you seem to have fallen for. “People are lazy”. Is the same as David Cameron’s “strivers not scroungers”. They have now cut benefits to the bone, meaning that benefits have become pretty much meaningless. That is the lasting legacy of shows like Jeremy Kyle.
      People aren’t lazy. In most circumstances, people are desperate. Our primal instinct is survival. There’s no need to shame others for living off of benefits, when greedy billionaires live off of state hand-outs because they have mates in government. Aim your criticism at the right people, not what Kyle’s false narrative was.
