John Is our most loved John. We are so proud of him and know that he is recovering well. There is another artist I have put in the magical box with John - Ren Gill (UK). I want Ren to do a cover of The Voice for John so that this version is passed on to a new master performer. I have written to Ren and asked him if he can do it. I would love to see what Ren could do with this song.
Especially as this was just a sound check/warm up. They didn't know they were being recorded so it was no holds barred, just let her rip. Result was extraordinary.

You just saw and heard the greatest and most versatile male vocalist of all time, with over 50 years of performing there’s a lot more of John for you discover. One of John’s concerts in Melbourne John did the Beatles version followed by his own version which was incredible and gives you a good idea of the difference between the two, personally I think John’s version is better.

And this this was his 3rd encore after a 2 1/2 hour amazing concert. He still had the same power and range right up until his early 70's when he had to stop due to his cancer of the mouth diagnosis in 2022 where he had some of his jaw removed and then reconstructed and is now cancer free!!

He's probably best known for his Anthemic songs like his most well known song, You're the Voice. NOTE Always react to live performances with John. They are even better than studio recordings😂
Blimey is British. The h in Farnham is silent and Melbourne is pronounced Melben. The Beatles wrote and recorded Help but John fixed it. Many years ago Richard Marx found John on radio by accident. He tracked him down in Australia and they became great friends. Richard was amazed that John sang 13 different genres naturally and said he is the greatest voice alive anywhere today. He is right but John doesn’t know it. Celine Dion calls herself his number one fan and last time they sang together they both went all fan over each other. Tom Jones came to tour with John here and they became lifelong friends. John is still surprised that famous people know who he is, no one told him he was famous and he can hold his own with anyone. He is humble, wonderful, caring, first there for a charity event and very much loved by us all. Listen to John sing Ledd Zeppelin’s Black Dog. It is only on here in audio but totally worth reacting to.
Great comment, mate. 💯 One suggestion, with Melbourne (and Brisbane) I think the 2nd syllable is more like “bn”, so Mel-bn and Bris-bn, we drop the vowel all together. Anyway, thanks for the interesting read.
What a beautiful response. Aussie here-I’ve watched this clip countless times and it never fails to make me cry. John is a beloved Australian icon and we adore him. I just loved your considered and passionate response, it was a joy. (P.S. Farnham is pronounced Farn-m. Melbourne is pronounced Mel-bn)
You need to try listening to many other songs from John Farnham...He is so phenomenally talented that can and has sung all types of music...All Genres! He is the GOAT and has been for 50+years!
You need to listen to him do “You’re the Voice” and “It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock’n’roll”. John is a phenomenon in Australia. That concert was in 1989, so John was 40.
The first time I heard John Farnham was in the 80s, he was big in his home country, Australia, then POW, and he had an Nr1 hit with that powerful voice, and I was blown away, then it went quiet for some time, then came the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, and there he was, sounding just the same as before, fantastic, in England we had Tom Jones, and Tony Christie, Tony's voice comes close to John's, but it was different music back then in the late 60s and early 70's, motown was picking up speed, Rock was still relevant, with a touch of blues and Jazz, of course we still had the classical Ballards, Tony Christie who still sings today as far as I know, always had a great selection of different songs, his problem was he came out a few years after Tom Jones and the Beatles, so his carrier was not as big as it could have been, shame, he deserved more recognition, now John Farnham had a similar problem, even though his voice was just fantastic, would love to hear a duet with Morissette Amon from the Philippinens, a power vocals as no other. 😊
If you are after some rhythm and blues, I would recommend you react to Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham singing a Sam & Dave song, When Something is Wrong With My Baby from Jimmy's Soul Deep album; l would suggest the live performance from either the Hey Hey It's Saturday show, or the 1991 ARIA(Australian Recording Industry Association) Awards. John is also a great ballad singer, his performance of a song written for him by Richard Marx is pure magic; l would recommend you react to his performance of The Reason Why from the 1994 ARIA Awards.
Awesome reaction , Gee can't wait till you get to hear audio only clip concert warm sound check of Led Zeppelin "Blackdog " and his back up vocalists and guitarist mezmerizing 👌
Hey!! I’ve just found you through John Farnham reaction to HELP. Always a good way to catch Aussies 😂 & I LOVED your reaction!! I remember watching this concert live on the telly and, recording it to rewatch many more times later, John was at the top of his game (30s?) and beginning to hit his peak vocally (I think he hit the peak 20+ years later). John is a freak, listen to Black Dog, Grenada, Please Don’t Ask Me, Playing To Win, You’re The Voice, etc. also, FFS, watch The Beatles!! 😂🙏😊😍
John first performed his version in 1970, at the Sydney Opera House in front of Queen Elizabeth II; this is a bit more ramped up than his original performance. John was 21 when he first performed this song; this concert for tv was in 1989, which makes him 40 years of age.
For ROCK, check out John doing his AC/DC cover and his Led Zepplin cover.....both with the MSO. Long Way To The Top is equal to AC / DC , maybe better......Black Dog is audio only as it was the sound check and warm up song. For soul, his duet with Jimmy Barnes.....a cover of When Something Is Wrong With My Baby, by Sam n Dave. The live version from the ARIAS is the best......The Australian Recording Industry Awards ( ARIAS ). Musical theatre live......Gethsemane, final night of the 1990's Australian Jesus Christ Superstar tour. A young John Farnham taking Paul Simons " Bridge Over Troubled Waters " to a new level.
Aussie legend right there ….thanks for the appreciation of John if you like more blues/soul check out John and Jimmy Barnes singing something is wrong with my baby live at the ARIAs ❤❤❤
This was one of 2 enchores after a 2.5 hr show with his awesome band plus The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The Beatles song was written as a 'boppy' song quite fast as per their style...John takes it to another level with his slower more emotional level....even some might say a prayer like plea. You could do every performance from this show and be totally blown away. Liked and Subscribed....waiving to you from Australia ps your dad would love Johns cover of Led Zeppelin's Black Dog & from this same show AC/DC It's a Long Way To The Top ...lol
From Gethsemane to Black Dog, and every genre in between, John Farnham is the equal of anybody in vocal skills. Add to that his stage presence and audience involvement, and he is exceptional. In any GOAT listing, he would have to get a mention.
As you have done 2 John reactions that bring back memories on you mothers side. Check out John doing “a long way to the top “AC/DC COVER must be the love version or black dog he used this song as a sound check/ warn up. These songs will give you memories from you from your dads side
If you like Rock then watch his cover of Black Dog , which was a sound check . Many consider it better than Lead Ziplines original . He also does ACDC ,Its a long way to the top and can go all the way around to Grenada with Anthony Warlow , an opera. He can sing anything really and was considered as a replacement for Freddy when Queen was looking for another front man . John has a great relationship with Tom Jones and especially Celine Dion amongst other great singers .
If you liked “help” checkout Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham’s song “when something is wrong with my baby” live on hey hey it’s Saturday. You will enjoy. Cheers mate. Welcome to the rabbit hole.
Note how he uses the mic and how far it is fro his mouth..... that is how pure his voice was..... sadly after surgery I don't think we'll hear it the same ever again... I hope, but its small. It's sad for John too, because this video shows just HOW much he loves to perform... he is a showman through and through... so my heart breaks that he can't do it right now, if ever again.
Haha, this is pretty much unrecognisable from the original Beatles' classic..imo this is much better! John's voice is so powerfull and explosive as you noticed, yet he is always in full control of it. His annunciation is always perfect. Enjoyed your reaction!
John Lennon didn't tell John directly, he and Paul said this separately from each other in comments to others in 1980, sadly it was not long before .John Lennon was murdered.
Most concerts were advertised as John Farnham and Band, or his band, or the JF band, this one was John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol This song is one of the last songs that he would sing at the end of the night after he had already sung his heart out for nearly 3 hours. Some have pointed out that this particular recording of the concert was closer to 2 hours of actual singing during the TV special, but it was also on the 4th or 5th night that he had sung like this. Either way, it was one of multiple nights that he did this on January 4-10, 1989, so his voice is still worthy of the accolades. Not many other singers can belt like that for even 2 or 3 nights without a rest. And besides picking at the exact details or this exact performance, Farnsey also has a way of getting deep into the emotions of your soul. A couple of songs worth checking have been mentioned below, plus these are worth a look also. The reason you haven't heard of him is because the US music industry is a closed little club. When John Farnham went to the US they didn't know which genre to put him in so his US promotions manager got him a couple of gigs in a little jazz club, where the MC introduced him as Jack Phantom. Couldn't even be bothered getting his name correct, so being a bit disheartened he wandered home to concentrate on his loyal fan base. The experience did give him inspiration to write a couple of good songs about missing his family, like this one. -Burn For You.. ua-cam.com/video/4PPvOhPspEA/v-deo.html -Angels.. Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers. JF with Lisa Edwards, a top singer in her own right, and one of John's back up singers for 20+ years. ua-cam.com/video/5_2NJRIdBO8/v-deo.html -Amazing Grace.. To show the calibre of his other back up Singers, showing you have to be good in your own right, just like Lisa. This is Vanetta Fields and Lindsey Field. ua-cam.com/video/_x6N94OEkZQ/v-deo.html -Please Don't Ask Me.. This one with Olivia Newton John, who we have recently lost. John has also had major cancer surgery including removal of part of his jaw and we may not hear him sing again. So let's enjoy this one as well.. Edit- JF has announced he is free of cancer, but has not mentioned anything about singing again. ua-cam.com/video/2uV_tZODfK8/v-deo.html -When Something Is Wrong With My Baby.... And even when he is singing with one of the most powerful voices on the planet, Jimmy Barnes, he still put the mike away from his face and closer to Jonny Diesel on guitar. ua-cam.com/video/AU_bCchDWF4/v-deo.html Or this version, both are great, but slightly different.. ua-cam.com/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/v-deo.html -When The War Is Over… Possibly one of his greatest vocals. ua-cam.com/video/lfWrXc5eN8g/v-deo.html -Or is the greatest. Gethsemane.. ua-cam.com/video/k5woMZtClhI/v-deo.html -How about a mike test. He has the power and ability to distort microphones, blow up amps, and get speaker stacks jumping. So this sort of setting up the venue test is a must. Lol Black Dog. ua-cam.com/video/F2Yi6TVi-sU/v-deo.html Besides having the best voice ever, JF can adjust his tone, pitch, volume, to match the person he is singing with to either match them or sing just under them depending on who's the head line act, he will even back himself down when he is the head line to give others their moment to shine, and if my ears were sensitive enough, I wouldn't be surprised if he could vary his vibrato, timbre and all of those other things that voices can do so he could accentuate the other singers.
@@devilsadvocate2548 I see that you still don't read what I have written above, so I will copy and paste the same response that I have replied with to you at least half a dozen times before... Because he also sung this song after 3 hours of singing, on multiple nights, as the last or second last encore, as mentioned by others who attended the gigs during that week, which neither of us did. Some had even watched more than one concert. And I have acknowledged that this particular recording was after 2 hours of concert for the telecast and recording, as you had pointed out. Yeah, you would have to ask the people who were there, I'm only repeating the first hand experiences that those people have said through the comments sections for that last 3 or so years. JF also throws in a lot of jokes, introductions of his band and back up singers, and does a lot of story telling in his shows, so yeah, it' would likely not be continuous 3 hours of full volume singing. But, I've made this comment to just cut and paste the JF story overall and to highlight his brilliance rather than to be absolutely minute perfect on each and every individual performance he has ever done. The reason for doing that is to get the reactors to look deeper into his career and not just follow what other reactors have got many views from. If you do find some of the ones I haven't corrected yet, please let me know so that I can update them like this one has been, but you need to read the comments first before responding. Thanks.
@@stevegraham3817 then why did you say 'after he had already sung his heart out for 3 hours' then? Seems you don't even read your own posts! It also appears you didn't read what I actially said either when I referred to THIS concert ie the one recorded, or this video/DVD which I have in my collection, hence why I know he only 'sung his heart out' for about 2 hours. I didn't say a thing about the other nights and I wasn't denying that the other nights may have been 3 hours instead of the 2 hours for THIS concert, the one that was recoded THAT PARTICULAR NIGHT. John was always known to mix things up which is why I was only referring to THIS recorded concert/night because it was highly likely he may have 'sung his heart out' for 3 hours those other nights and not the 2 hours he sung for THIS PARTICULAR concert/night/performance/recording! 😀
@@devilsadvocate2548 Because it is a part of a sentence, so it has to be read in the context of the whole sentence... Take note of - 'that he would sing', not that 'he did sing'... And then straight under that sentence, is the correction that says... Some have pointed out that this particular recording of the concert was closer to 2 hours of actual singing during the TV special, but it was also on the 4th or 5th night that he had sung like this. You said - "It wasn't 3 hours for this concert." And I had already acknowledged that in the original comment.
Seeing as you mentioned, you like Rock, Blues, kind of I suggest you check out John Farnham It's a long way to the top with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, From this concert. And also Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham singing When something is wrong with my Baby, live. Make sure you pick one of the 3 live performances. Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham are Australia's two greatest singers. Jimmy started out with Rock from the 70's and 80's then in the 90's went into Soul and Blues. His voice is one for the ages.
Damn, I was actually interested to hear your reaction to the original at the end, here. It actually would have been better to hear the Beatles version first so you could fully appreciate this arrangement, but you loved it anyway, which is always the goal. Thanks for the reaction, if you want to hear a great original by The Voice (our local nickname for Farnsy here in Aus), check out “You’re the Voice” from the same concert.
Yes his in his 70’s and still sounds the same… the last time John performed live was the Fire Concert in early 2020 to raise funds for those who lost everything in the 2019 bushfires. Anytime there is a charity concert John is the first to sign up to perform
It wasn't the last song. There was another encore after this one where he sang Sadie and It's a Long Way to the Top for a concert that had about 2 hours of singing and not 3.
After a while you realise John is unmatched...which must mean he is the best male voice of the last 50 years.
In case nobody has said this, ALWAYS listen to this man LIVE! PHENOMENAL!!!
Absolutely. Especially when you realise that this performance was his second encore..... after more than 2 hours on stage 🤯

Well done. You said it all.❤
Great comment, mate. 💯 One suggestion, with Melbourne (and Brisbane) I think the 2nd syllable is more like “bn”, so Mel-bn and Bris-bn, we drop the vowel all together.
Anyway, thanks for the interesting read.
John Farnham is the GOAT. He can sing any genre. Check out 'You're the Voice' and 'Long way to the top' same concert with the MSO.
Yes indeed. One of our best ever. Thankyou for your great reaction. Gives me goosebumps every time. Luv from Australia ❤️🎼❤️🎼❤️
Best Aussie singer ever, and one of the best voices world wide. JF rocks 🥰 Aussie pride
John is the best, amazing singer since the 1960. The best my daughters and I listen in the 1980. Love him. Wish him the best. 🙏🙏🫶🫶
You need to listen to him do “You’re the Voice” and “It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock’n’roll”. John is a phenomenon in Australia. That concert was in 1989, so John was 40.
Please remember this was his second encore after a 2 hour concert.
You NEED to listen to the audio of John singing Black Dog.
The Hey Hey one is very hard to find these days, but it’s here for I don’t know how much longer. ua-cam.com/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/v-deo.html
Early 40's at this time, I would say. ❤ man! Thank you so much for watching him xxoo
This is 1979, the last song of the second call back after a 2hr plus concert. John was born in 1948 same as Olivia Newtom-John.
Welcome to the world of John Farnham, have a look at the song You're the Voice live with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra ❤❤❤
I grew up listening to Jon, he is an Aussie icon
He usually wore his hair that way.
Played pubs too.
Friendly and down to earth...Jimmy too
John first performed his version in 1970, at the Sydney Opera House in front of Queen Elizabeth II; this is a bit more ramped up than his original performance. John was 21 when he first performed this song; this concert for tv was in 1989, which makes him 40 years of age.
1980
Oh! I'll make sure to check those out, thanks!
John Farnham is our Australian Icon. You should listen to his song. "Your the voice".
Aussie legend right there ….thanks for the appreciation of John if you like more blues/soul check out John and Jimmy Barnes singing something is wrong with my baby live at the ARIAs ❤❤❤
John is our National Treasure. Such a beautiful man.
Help by John Farnham was released in 1980 he was 31 years old (born 1949)
This was recorded in 1989 and was a final encore so he was getting tired.
He was 40 and Fatnham is pronounced FARNAM and Melbourne is MELBUN . 😂❤🎉
John homage to the Beatles and what I feel is soul music along with feel with all his has Is immortalizing and stirring
From Gethsemane to Black Dog, and every genre in between, John Farnham is the equal of anybody in vocal skills. Add to that his stage presence and audience involvement, and he is exceptional. In any GOAT listing, he would have to get a mention.
Known as The Voice in Oz ❤ One of our legends x
Your face said it all. No more words needed
Known as the voice in Australia ❤❤❤❤
There's a reason he is called 'The Voice' in Australia
John Farnham is the best Aussie singer.
As you have done 2 John reactions that bring back memories on you mothers side. Check out John doing “a long way to the top “AC/DC COVER must be the love version or black dog he used this song as a sound check/ warn up. These songs will give you memories from you from your dads side
He is a National Treasure. Known in Australia as 'The Voice'
John can sing all types of music including Opera
And this is an encore ….
With another one after it!
John could sing anything!
Haha, this is pretty much unrecognisable from the original Beatles' classic..imo this is much better!
John's voice is so powerfull and explosive as you noticed, yet he is always in full control of it. His annunciation is always perfect. Enjoyed your reaction!
Wait until you hear his sound check performance of Black Dog by Zeppelin.
Joh Lennon - told John that was how he wrote it not how the Beatles performed it.
John Lennon didn't tell John directly, he and Paul said this separately from each other in comments to others in 1980, sadly it was not long before .John Lennon was murdered.
@@CWEMorgan thanks for the correction - good to get it right
Great reaction mate , play any live reactions from John as all Aussies will let you know.
Rabbit hole you will go and be backed from Oz bud.
Amazing Grace with him and Vanetta Fields and Lindsay Field 1987
This was at the end of a 2 ½ hour concert and was the encore!
John Lennon loved this version
Everyone is affected by beauty, art form.
Most concerts were advertised as John Farnham and Band, or his band, or the JF band, this one was John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol
This song is one of the last songs that he would sing at the end of the night after he had already sung his heart out for nearly 3 hours.
-Burn For You..
ua-cam.com/video/4PPvOhPspEA/v-deo.html
-Angels..
Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers.
JF with Lisa Edwards, a top singer in her own right, and one of John's back up singers for 20+ years.
ua-cam.com/video/5_2NJRIdBO8/v-deo.html
-Amazing Grace..
To show the calibre of his other back up Singers, showing you have to be good in your own right, just like Lisa.
This is Vanetta Fields and Lindsey Field.
ua-cam.com/video/_x6N94OEkZQ/v-deo.html
-Please Don't Ask Me..
This one with Olivia Newton John, who we have recently lost. John has also had major cancer surgery including removal of part of his jaw and we may not hear him sing again. So let's enjoy this one as well..
Edit- JF has announced he is free of cancer, but has not mentioned anything about singing again.
ua-cam.com/video/2uV_tZODfK8/v-deo.html
-When Something Is Wrong With My Baby....
And even when he is singing with one of the most powerful voices on the planet, Jimmy Barnes, he still put the mike away from his face and closer to Jonny Diesel on guitar.
ua-cam.com/video/AU_bCchDWF4/v-deo.html
Or this version, both are great, but slightly different..
ua-cam.com/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/v-deo.html
-When The War Is Over…
Possibly one of his greatest vocals.
ua-cam.com/video/lfWrXc5eN8g/v-deo.html
-Or is the greatest.
Gethsemane..
ua-cam.com/video/k5woMZtClhI/v-deo.html
-How about a mike test.
He has the power and ability to distort microphones, blow up amps, and get speaker stacks jumping. So this sort of setting up the venue test is a must. Lol
Black Dog.

Besides having the best voice ever, JF can adjust his tone, pitch, volume, to match the person he is singing with to either match them or sing just under them depending on who's the head line act, he will even back himself down when he is the head line to give others their moment to shine, and if my ears were sensitive enough, I wouldn't be surprised if he could vary his vibrato, timbre and all of those other things that voices can do so he could accentuate the other singers.
It wasn't 3 hours hours for this concert. It was closer to 2 hours of singing by the time he sang Sadie and It's a Long Way to the Top after this.
You said - "It wasn't 3 hours for this concert."
And I had already acknowledged that in the original comment.
Amazing
Best of the best
John takes the stage, turns to Elvis and says. 'hold my beer"
You like that one then check him out singing Your the Voice from the same concert......................there's none better
He can sing opera,rocck..anything
Farnham, the h is silent, or just call him Farnsey like we do. We don't say ss in aussie, we put in zz instead. Like we live in Oz.
Welcome to the wormhole that is Australian music my brother, there’s lots more where that came from
Farnsey is the greatest
...and then this same bloke does "Black Dog" or "It's a Long Way to the Top"
He does it all.
Listen to John Fareham & Anthony Warlow singing together
John Lennon said this was the best version of this song, and the way should have been sung.
And this was the envore after s two hour concert.
A little education. Not melbourrrne, it’s pronounced Melbin. Short & sharp. John Faarnhim pronounced. Now glad you loved this. 😊
He does randr and can dohard rock.He and Jimmy..Last song after a 3 hour concert
It wasn't the last song. There was another encore after this one where he sang Sadie and It's a Long Way to the Top for a concert that had about 2 hours of singing and not 3.
