Great video, a different view of the bush off the beaten track. I grew up in Gwalia (‘71-‘79, I’m 57 now). This whole area was my playground. The house we lived in is still occupied. The area has changed quite a bit over the years by the looks of it. Many old shanties have been removed for scrap, a bunch moved to appeal to the tourist crowd, and also to make way for the mine operations. It looks much emptier. The original mine closed in 1963 and remained mostly dormant until the 1980s (after we left). The open cut mine (24:53) has completely consumed the original mine site, expanded considerably starting in the 80s. What’s not seen is the underground workings: the mine descends underground for about 1800m or more. It’s the deepest gold mine in Australia, and the deepest in the world that utilizes full size trucks (60-tonne Capco as seen here) all the way to the bottom. A round-trip down and back is 4-5 hours. Last I read, there’s enough gold in the mine to last at least into the 2030s.
I really get a kick when I receive feedback and comments like this from people who been there/lived there/ know the background of some of these places. I bet you could tell some stories of Friday and Saturday nights from the front bar at the State Hotel. Good times. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
@@mongreldogproductions You’re welcome! The hotel closed when the mine did, in ‘63. For many years it also was dormant, and even faced the possibility of being torn down. Western Mining Co. occupied it as offices for a time. It was saved, along with many of the shanties and other historical buildings, by an American couple, Don and Donna Reid, who lived in and restored the Hoover House. Don was a geologist in the mining business. Donna was especially instrumental in keeping the old houses from being scrapped; as an artist, she sketched many of the buildings. She restored the little train, “Ken,” up near the museum. The headframe also almost meant for scrap but was relocated to its present spot, later rebuilt to keep that history alive. It’s the only wooden headframe left in Australia, as far as I know. The hotel is occasionally opened to visitors but is largely not open to the public. The only time I saw the inside was when it was briefly used to hold church services, oddly enough. My first exposure to religion. The Reid’s later moved to SA. Don passed last year, but Donna is still going strong.

Nice one Steve few of those places on my bucket list as well, How you finding that OA 4?..
Maiden voyage…not a fan of GoPro! The Osmo 4 has some more sensitive microphones which tends to pick up more background noise. I’d recommend them (maybe I should ask for sponsorship lol).
Hey Steve, you're back on the DR650,RAY 😊.
Hi Ray, I do lean toward the R1200 but it’s off the road getting some well earned love.
Just don’t let the spare tyre brake your other bikes subframe 😂😂😂, I will be coming over your way next year on my BIG around Australia ride , some fantastic old towns hay, would like to meet hopefully and go for a ride with you mate 👍, you have such different country in WA .Maybe old mate could upgrade his suspension to help his back handle the roads better .
Allow lots of time for your journey…so much to do and see. See on the other side.
"Maybe old mate could upgrade his suspension to help his back handle the roads better" Funny you should say that - new shockies on the way, although it wasn't the roads or suspension that did for me.
@@Mr_Mxyzptlk have you changed your name by Deed Poll???
@@mongreldogproductions More like Opinion Poll, happens to be Superman's nemisis. I was searching for a name with no vowels, almost impossible!
Great video, any update on the BMW?
It got back to Perth a week ago…currently preparing a quote for the Insurer. I’d like to think it’ll be back in the game in a week or two. 😀
Steve. Is your next adventure the Holland track with your wheelbarrow 🤗👍🏴
Funny you should mention that. Later this week, myself and a small group of 4WD'ers are doing the Holland Track and have a look around the Woodlands. Watch this space.
@@mongreldogproductions Steve. Great opportunity to wear turndown wellies to go with the wheelbarrow. I can imaging the opening scene to the video. 🤣🤣🤣
@@alasdairhamilton1574 turndown Wellies and a Mankini perhaps???
@@mongreldogproductions whatever floats your boat🫣👙😜
A good bit of a tour around, great vid thanks Steve 👍🏻
Did you get the beema fixed?
Not yet…still a week away maybe and then back in the game. Watch this space. 😊
Nice one Steve O, how’s he GS goin? Get her back home yet?
The bike finally arrived back in Perth for quote and repair…6 week wait for the paralever torque arm ex GermNy. Apparently, not many riders break there’s. Go figure.
@@mongreldogproductions maybe they don’t break often….. your ones been round the solar system a few times though!! Love your work mate👍🏼👍🏼

Back at ya.
I guess the pioneers didn’t have milk … how would anyone even feed a goat out there much less a cow
Powdered milk perhaps....if they had enough water???
@@mongreldogproductions Trying to put events in their order. The Southern Cross, WA gold find was in 1888. Coolgardie was founded in 1892. Kalgoorlie was founded a year later. Obvious water scarcity problems, leading to the rail line construction Northam to the Goldfields during 1894 to 1897. Up to 5 water trains per day, before the Goldfields water pipeline was completed in 1903. Condensed milk & milk powder are 1850s & 1830s developments. The Page Brothers (Americans) set up a condensed milk factory in Switzerland (1866) that later merged with Nestle. Australia became the 2nd largest import market for condensed milk, before the first Australian condensed milk plant was built in 1908. The Australian production of Powdered Milk started in 1910.
@@alanb9337 thank you for taking the trouble to research this…I actually found it intriguing when you start to join the dots. I know that some pioneers were visionary (CY O’Connor for example) who were instrumental in opening up the Goldfields. Thanks for watching.
What happened with the the repair on your frame?
Still a work in progress…should be back on the road in a week or two.
What were the line up of bikes on this adventure
Suzuki DR650’s, Suzuki DRZ400 and a Ural sidecar. 😊
😁
Broken leg Tom isn't ex Army is he?
He is…did time on Active Duty in Afghanistan and some peace time duty overseas. A good man to have on your side. 😊
@@mongreldogproductions known as Horse? 1 RAR? If so we served together. Looks like him. Been a long time. About 91 I think, if it’s the same Tom.

@@mongreldogproductions Ha, what do you know eh. I looked at him on the video excerpt you had from when he broke his leg, and I thought I know that bloke. We were the the machine gun team. @@adamusher he reads a lot of these comments…and we are having coffee tomorrow so I’m sure it will come up in conversation. 👍
How’s the GS doing ?
Any updates on the damage?
Thanks , great video again.
In getting repaired atm…won’t be long now. It probably needed a good rest anyway. 😂
A real bummer for the Beamer !
Hope the repairs won’t brake the bank ! Fingers crossed!
