Thanks. Leaving the ballistic tip in my guns, in honor of Paul H. Come winter next week any round will have to be able to get thru a flannel shirt, insulated hoodie, insulated overalls and a Carhartt jacket. 😂
But are they effective after going through a box of pop tarts?... What we're going to use here today is critical duty 124 grain Plus p polymer tip... We're going to try them on the pop tarts... And today we're going to be using our high-tech fleece backstop... And then we're going to test with the polymer tip removed, 💨 Okay... Those were interesting results, for the most part the pop tarts are still intact... With a through and through into the fleece backstop, with minimal expansion... OK now with the polymer tip removed, here we go.💨 Okay um, that was catastrophic, it's still raining pop tart crumbs... OK now we have total expansion and the pop tarts seem to have departed With extreme prejudice... So in conclusion, are the critical duty 124 grain plus p More effective without the polymer tip? You be the judge. And once again I'm what they call a professional don't try this at home. 🎶🎵🎶
I agree that the 124+P is the best of the Critical Duty breed and it is my 9mm choice ammunition in restrictive states such as New Jersey. I wouldn’t bother removing the tip for use in other/normal locations. The cartridge works fine with or without the insert.
The state Police here in Michigan run the critical duty round in 9mm and I think they use the 135gr +p, I know my county sheriff dept. uses the critical duty in a 9mm 135gr +p loading
Yeah, I agree. I don’t think you can underestimate what happens to terminal ballistics when you send a bullet through various barriers. In other words you can’t assume what happens in the gel is what happens on a barrier.
Some brands might be a bit better or cheaper but Hornady seems pretty good and consistant. I believe per round Hornady is gonna be a bit cheaper than federal or speer gold dot and as far as real world effeciveness probably about the same. Its common for stores around me to have it so thats just what i have. As long as your confident in the ammo the shooter is the limitation.
Are you a cop ? If not, being able to go thru windshields seems like a situation that a citizen would rarely encounter. (Of course if you live where there are frequent drive-by shootings, I could see the preference for that.
@@Black_0pCar0linaThe ammunition used by Law Enforcement will go through a windshield fine. In training, you can shoot through the windshield to engage a hostile subject.
I dont run the Critical Duty but am a fan of it. Love the 17 inches of penetration. Just wish Hornady would pour in a little more powder and push it another 50-75 fps.
Awesome test Tools. This is the Only Hornady Self Defense Ammo I would consider carrying personally but its expansion sucks compared to Federal and others imho. I guess thats what You have to give up to go thru auto glass. It only expands to a 45 cal from a 9mm. That shallow HP seems to keep their expansion small. I will stay with Hydrashok or gold dots. But its a 3rd option to me if I need to shoot thru windshields I suppose.
Added the insert weight this go around! You saw my comment last video and I feel like you did that just for me. Something special right there, much appreciated.
Love your content. Maybe you could try this through barriers to see if it’s going to work well. This round was made more for barriers. Love the critical duty
I used to use Critical Duty as my main self defense cartridge until I saw your Federal Punch video. That convinced me to change out my EDC since it well out preformed the Critical Duty and was less expensive.
I have 40s&w 165 grain Federal punch in my Glock22 it's a wicked round. Speer gold dot 165 grain used to be my CCW round but it over penetrates way too much.
@ it does over penetrate a little but at my house I have a 50/50 chance of my threat being a black bear or cougar. I agree with tools on the idea that too much is better than too little.
My EDC is Hornady Critical...either Defense or Duty. I run +P when I have it but am ok with standard. I buy 124 grain. I just prefer 124 grain in 9mm all around. I have no evidence that the Hornadys are better than other defensive loads but I do believe in testing what I carry and limiting my carry loads to Hornady cuts down on wasting expensive carry rounds. Nice to see my choice validated. Thanks.
I really enjoy all your tests this was excellent I've been shooting for 50years and hooked on ballistics and projectiles since I was 10 and found out what a drop of oil on my bb did back in the day we didn't have any tipped, insert ,controlled expansion, expanding copper we had to modify existing ammo by grinding tips off ,cutting skives, etc love to see more tests like this one👍👍
@ToolsandTargets check out the David Tubbs nose ring cutter i think u tube has videos too this guy created a die that cuts skives into fmj rifle rounds it's adjustable for depth and width starting at 1000th/in skive around the tip that cut creates a low pressure zone less wind drag increases BC thats why tipped ammo is better BC the line between the tip and bullet if you cut deeper it will expand some if you cut deep and wide it pushes the tip back and it frags like a varmint sst check it out
Hornady just never expanded well, it's the same as always. I have a lot old Triton 9mm Hivel, It's all hornady old rounds. It's the same stuff as ever. It'll work, but not the best. I'm getting more convinced to just move to HST in general for modern. SXT/Ranger T/Gold Dot all good, but I never liked Hornady XTP and this is the same stuff.
Great video, I like that the velocity going into the gel was only a one foot per second difference. Those rounds are pretty good I have the 124+ p and the 135+p.👍
Great test. Both of these with and without tip tests answered the question a lot of folks have been asking, is it a gimmick. Clearly it is not. Appreciate you as always
Another excellent video review. It was particularly interesting because Critical Duty 124 gr +P is one of the rounds I use in my carry and home defense guns.
I like these videos. Years ago I had some WWB 38 Special HP and I drilled out the HP cavity a little wider. Never tested them but alwaus figured they would over expand and under penetrate.
Very cool test!! I mostly run 45. In 45 I use Critical Duty 220gr +p. When I do carry 9mm on occasion, I use 135+p Critical Duty. NJ we cannot carry HP's, yet.
I like critical duty because heavy jackets are a thing. I prefer the 135gr because it will run no problem in all 9mm hand guns, and a good thump to it. +p is great but I don't like to run it in all pistols. Also the testing I did with it on pumpkins we quite impressive. The recovered slugs opened up beautifully and did not over penetrate. They expansion on mine, looked more like yours without the insert...
An issue with the critical duty is they won't chamber is some firearms, any chambers on the small end of the specs will have the bullet jam in the throat preventing the round from fully chambering and prevent action from locking, I emailed hornady with photos of rounds showing where the rifling jammed on the bullets when attempting to chamber them reply was that they were aware of the issue with some firearms.
Good stuff Tools. I have probably 7-8 boxes of the 135gr +P stuff in the safe. My first choice is 124gr +P Gold Dot or HST but wouldn't feel out-gunned with either Critical Duty load.
I've had some 110 vmax tips mess up in my 300 blkout and pulled em out. They shot fine but wondered if it changes terminal effects. Pretty cool video tools!!! Happy shooting Hoss!!! Bang bang!!!!
I keep the 135+P in my Beretta apx a1 for home defense. They run flawlessly and with that pointed shape and inserts, I can't see how they could FTF. The Beretta also has a heavy recoil spring and the 135 +P makes the perfect home defense ammo for me.
The Hornady critical line is what i use most over others because of what my wife calls over buying in the past. As always, appreciate the videos keep them coming 👍.
I remember hearing the insert was more to prevent wall board and such from clogging…it does however seem to attribute to deeper penetration.. Might be a case of trying to ace the test vs being optimized for clothing barrier.
Dooo-ty!! Fantastic test man! But my luck is so bad I’d cause the round to fire by trying to remove that polymer tip. Any thoughts on doing a similar test on some rifle rounds?
These both would work for me eventho Im a cheap charlie with my Winchester WB 115 grain because they do the job, but 9mm is cheap enough to where I do typically buy a box of spicier stuff to shoot at the range to have a bit more fun.
Great performance either way in my book. I have several boxes of these and the 135s just to have some on hand. I always like the penetration the Critical Duty get. Another great jelly test good sir👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

Thank you for looking out for me it was hard to stay engaged without a second video playing say subway surfers so thanks for clarifying the test with words.
Have you ever tried to replace the insert with wax? I'm wondering if the wax would act as an in between insert and melt away causing better expansion then the polymer insert.
Would love to see that 50ae cyclops on this channel it makes a lot more sense for a derringer than the 45-70 it’s got pistol powder and a lot shorter case that doesn’t take up the whole barrel …. If your gonna have 1 shot that thing seems like a winner
Hey tools did you use a heavy clothing barrier? Great vid. Interesting idea though I expected more change similarly to with the crit defense. Also how do you think it would preform if I pulled a 165 44spl critical defense and loaded it in a 4” magnum at around 1400fps?

Even without the insert, it DID expand! And very well. It looks good to me!
Just more evidence of a good choice in your EDC ammo!
The state Police here in Michigan run the critical duty round in 9mm and I think they use the 135gr +p, I know my county sheriff dept. uses the critical duty in a 9mm 135gr +p loading
The tip can cause feeding hang ups in 1911 style pistols.
With or without the tip both performed well. Haven’t tried the CD, use either 124 or 147 HST’s. Thanks for the jelly test Tools!
😎👊
Test much appreciated!
Appreciate you!😎👊
The tip is more important when going through drywall and auto glass. Both of those will stop many hollowpoints from expanding.
Critical duty is designed to penetrate auto glass while still meeting min gel requirements with proper expansion.
Yeah, I agree. I don’t think you can underestimate what happens to terminal ballistics when you send a bullet through various barriers. In other words you can’t assume what happens in the gel is what happens on a barrier.

Been carrying Critical Duty for years. It was the only hollow known to go through windshields at the time I started buying them.

I second that. Test some of the PSA 300 Black Out rounds with the red and black tips removed.

the wound channel was better with the tip 😂 even so, solid performance from a reputable company I've come to expect excellent performance from.

It's gel. The wound channel in gel is not indicative of what it would do in living tissue. This is one of the biggest misconceptions of gel testing.
