The oldest running car in the world! Named "La Marquise" after the Count de Dion's mother, this 127-year-old automobile had single-family ownership for 81 years and currently has only four owners from new. La Marquise was even a participant in the first automobile race in 1887. To be offered in Hershey on Friday, October 7, 2011, this historically significant motor car is certainly an opportunity not to be missed by serious collectors. I saw this make and model ( one of six remaining) sold at an R&M Auto Auction held at Hershey PA about four years ago for a princely sum of $ 4.3 million US Dollars plus buyer’s commission.
I love how much can be learnt from these short documentaries. =)
37mph HOLY!!!!!! this was pretty fast back then O_O
A runabout! I'LL STEAL IT! NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW!
Hahaha! That's 👍👉right!
No one.
And it's worth the same as a Bugatti Veyron.
Quite a contrast!
Dommage que ce n est pas en français je suis fasciner
surprised it only sold for 5million if it is in fact a real vintage one.
in 500 years the oldest running car will be a Lada
In 490 years
Wonderful , Thanks !
This thing was faster than Benz's benzine-fueled car.
Yet the Bugatti Atlantic is being sold for $40,000,000.
What year was this car shown at the Pebble Beach Concours? That's where I saw it. Amazing piece of history.
Esses carros eram incríveis apesar de suas limitações era um grande avançado em um época onde animais eram usados para se transportar.
Jay Leno will be the buyer.
this car looks very fast for a steam engine, imagine the fear it would have instilled on the horses, people and cats of that day it came out of the workshop or should I say horse barn in 1884...exhaust emmisions seems clean white steam very clever engineering when people were still using axes to cut down trees and there was no friskies or whiskas for cat food
fidel catsro people were very used to steam trains. It would be like seeing a convertible Veyron today. A rich man's toy, that brings out many emotions based on the viewer.
Up until the 1980s the French taxed automobiles based on equivalent steam horsepower.
Why is the car on auction?
I have never seen a car that goes with coal!
its not a car its a motorbike
Didn't they have electric cars in 1884 or was 1830
what program is this from?
1997 is the year you're thinking of...
Correction, it's 1884.
Wow, you found a steam car older than the first internal combustion car. Except the first steam car was 1803 and they had big locomotives by 1820. Wow, this 1884 steam car is not special at all, then.
Just before the flash boiler so which really improved steam. Even so it is special because although not old it is the oldest running. That is important. Another 30 or 40 years until petrol engines got the electric starter so making them as easy to start.
Andrew Lohmann
First petrol car with the electric starter was a 1912 Cadillac.
Thanks for the piece of information. A number of the big expensive cars had some sort of starter mechanism such as compressed air. Although these cars were never made in volume. A lot of Cadillac's were made I guess? If so your point is important.
I expect none of the cheaper £200 cars in Europe had electric start.
Andrew Lohmann
The electric starter was invented by Kittering who went on to found Delco
You're right, no big deal, they built so many, and there are so many still around and running. 9 _ 9
Imagine a17 year old guy like me cruising with my crappy ass Mazda portage at that time, I would be the richest mothefucka in town
All talk and no nuts and bolts
shit looks cool
What!!! America did not build the first car!
*****
I believe the first to fly were the Russians.
+kickdje YEA!! SYRIAN BUILD FRIST CAR. FIRST CAR IS BUILD BY OTTO VON BENZ, 1885 BENZ PATEN MOTOR WAGEN
Nor the first plane or rocket. And we had to kidnap scientists to create the atomic bomb. We went to the moon in a sci fi movie and every war is a black flag operation to justify it. Ya...there is some truth to learn.
+steve nunua The first American car was an 1805 Oliver Evans, which was the same as the 1804 Trevethick made in England.
+hyzercreek Sorry, 1803 Trevithick, the London Steam Carriage
Teenagers didn't get to own cars until the 1960's when the baby boomer generation in the USA got their parents to buy them cars.
