I return Solo to my Natural Primitive Shelter for a Winter Bushcraft Camping Trip. I bring a Fur Blanket for Warmth do some Campfire Cooking and Build my shelter for Winter conditions insulating it to accommodate the frigid temperatures. I use Bows Sticks and Snow to close in the sides and really create a warm space of dead air. The Fire reflected back off the rocks to keep me warm despite the -26 Degree Temperatures.
I was quite pleased how it all worked out.

I Enjoy watching you videos very much. Keep up the good work Ted 👍🏼
@@daveware8054 Thanks Dave! Appreciate it my man👊👍
Brings back memories of years gone by. Now I'm over 60 and can't walk 10 ft, from the truck. I wish I could have been camera litterate 50 years ago. Thanks for the memories Ted. I'm one of your biggest fans. Keep them coming. Bless you and your family.
Thank you Brian i appreciate it. The stories of the days gone by would have amazing to see today for sure. Take care qnd Thanks for the support
From a Sunny 70F Texas, than you for all the video of the snow. I'm not bragging about the heat, I am lamenting. We need several weeks of good freezing weather, or the bugs will be apocalyptic this summer. We've had only a handful of days with below freezing temperaures...so seeing the snow is wonderful. Thanks for taking us along.
Hey Thanks for coming along I hope you get that cooler weather you are hoping for. Even here I miss the winters of yesterday they keep getting warmer. Thanks for watching take care
Love the fact that this is just natural sound, no music. just look at the amount of snow on that roof - wow real survival skills at - 26C
🇨🇦 awesome channel Ted. From an older Canadian women I love your content. Camera work amazing. I also want to give a huge thumbs up for not adding filler music. I turn away from those bushcraft channels that do that. Part of the experience from a viewer’s perspective is nature’s sounds and human sounds such as foot steps on crunchy snow. It all makes us feel like we are there with you. Thanks for awesome skills and efforts.
Thanks a lot :) yes I like to share the sounds of nature snow fire etc in a lot of my videos. Some other videos I have a mix of commentary and nature. I figure it's good to share it all. Thanks for the feedback. 😊
Ted Baird it’s a perfect mix. Love the commentary too. I’ve learned so much from you.
I watch a lot of winter camping and truly enjoy it but you take it to a whole other level. You show with hard work and a ton of creativity you don’t need any of the commercial equipment that most campers need. There are only a few of you that perform so much with so little. Keep the adventures coming and good luck with your future.
Hey Phillip Thank you I appreciate that. I enjoy the practice and love getting out even with modern gear as well but just doing things by your own sweat and blood is how I like it best. But really I enjoy it all. Loving the bushcraft right now. Got a new winter bushcraft shelter build coming out Tomorrow morning. Catch a later cheers
Excellent, I watched you build this tree bark shelter and it stood up to the test. So nice to see a return trip. The use of the time, energy and thought into the amazing number of camera angles are what sets you apart from anyone else I've seen. You are a master of your environment in these type of adventures. Action speaks louder than words but I also thoroughly enjoyed your most recent upload, "Winter Camping in a Canvas Hot Tent with my Wife and Dog - Wolves and Wood Stove". That was tough as well with the adverse weather. How nice that must have been to share that experience. Thank you for sharing with us arm chair enthusiasts. From the UK and my personal perspective, number one, uno my friend a big thanks. Look forward to the next one.

Hello my friend. Thanks a lot for your kind words. Its much appreciated and is great to hear the feedback. We like to mix it up as well enjoy many different kinds of activities.
.
It was awesome to see the shelter held up well for sure Its still standing even after another food and a half of snow so Id say it passes the test lol. Ill have another bushcraft Vid out this Friday. Take care
Ted, you are definitely one of the most efficient Bushcraft outdoor survivalist guys I've seen so far on UA-cam great job great work very inspirational man
Much appreciated thanks a lot great to have you here 🍻
Nice quiet natural ASMR'ik vid..
Gorgeous snow shelter insulation as long as your bark roof holds..
melting from an early global warming spring-like day in March could be a problem..
I wouldn't want to lose the insulating, isolated feeling you must get..
Nice job, again, man! You rock! Keep'em quiet..
Those are the benifits of lone hiking and camping experiences that last a lifetime!!
Hey Michael. Yes I agree it is ASMR'ik I gotta say I love commentary but I also go to the woods to just open my ears and senses and listen to the forest. Who I'm solo and working away I sometimes I get in a zone. no need to say much, I enjoy all the aspects so I like to care all the aspects in different styles. Yes a melt would make the walls in need of repair. the roof is holding up great not sure how it will fair come spring. time will tell. Cheers mate
Very well built overnight shelter. Very cozy, you are truly dedicated.
Thank you
Mr. Baird, you have worked extremely hard in making this camp site, I know you will be very tired and most like sleep well, just hope you’re warm and comfortable.
Thanks Nancy it was a surprisingly cozy night it all worked out great:)
- I love going camping in heavy snow ! There are tents, sleeping bags, cooking pots, tea and drinking water. At the same time, having one or two more companions, that's enough.
Dec, 15 - 2020.
Yes i agree
You have something rare that is lacking in most people these days....Awesome work ethic!! great video thanks for taking us along.
Thanks Marshall appreciate it. Thanks for tuning in 🍻
Your caban house is very beatiful and confortable !!!
Thank you :)
Ted you are so fortunate to own a Musk-Ox pelt, they are worth a fortune. Did you know the yarn that is spun from this majestic animal is in a class of exotic yarns called Qiviut yarn and that it is the most expensive yarn in the world. Just a toque knitted in this yarn will set you back $210.00. I once had the opportunity to knit with it and I'll never forget the luxurious feeling as it passed through my fingers. You work so hard to achieve your goals, it's a pleasure to watch your videos.
Thank you for you king words Amy. I didn't know that about the yarn my brother and I traded for it when in the high Arctic with our Inuit friend it's a really amazing thing to own we r fortunate for sure. Thanks for letting me know about Qiviut
Impressive. When you first came back to this shelter I thought your going to get cold and wet in that thing. Then you started with all the sticks & I’m like ok well that will help. THEN you added the pine. It all made sense then. You definitely know what your doing. I used to make all natural shelters as a kid. Granted Mom never let us kids stay in the woods but it’s so cool to see those transform. No one shelter will ever be the same. Very cool.
Hey Thanks glad you enjoyed it. You're right about how no one shelter will ever be the same that makes it very interesting to me every time. Its always dictated by the materials at hand and the vision of the builder. Glad it brought back fond memories for you. Take care
You're as tough as they come, Sir! Ranger's lead the way!
Tha is Alan! Appreciate it. Cheers 🍻
Excellent, particularly the wall.
I would've cleared the sleeping area of all snow, and set some traps for wild foods😋.
Fantastic little shelter.Altogether a very relaxing watch.Thank you.
Thank you I appreciate it. Glad it was relaxing also. My bushcraft style vids on here tend to be in this style. Some of the canoeing ones with my wife are also a good mix of relaxation and commentary. Thx for your thoughts. Appreciate it
Yep--you really bring my blood pressure down, the un-narrated way these vids play through. Thanks!
Bring Tyvek on your next trip. Keeps out the wind. Better than twigs and snow. Weighs nothing. You don't have to kill a tree. Doesn't radiate cold like snow does....just keeps in the heat
Tyvek is an awesome tip waterproof and super strong. Snow is def a better insulator and I was avoiding using tarps etc but the Tyvek tip is great for camping in general. Thanks for sharing Cheers
Very good little shelter, protected from the snow. I would put wood down and pine leaves as bedding though, it'd off the ground and would be warmer.
Thank you and ver good points. Its hard to tell but there is a raised wood bed and platform with bows so I am high off the ground. You can see it being built in my video called early winter bushcraft build natural primitive bark roof shelter if you are interested. Thank you for watching
@@TheRealTedBaird Oh okay, it's good you have bedding off the ground from the cold. I'd also suggest windbreak in the front too, as covered from the wind and snow as possible.
@@Righteous1ist Yes that's a good idea especially if there was a strong driving wind snow or rain something removable in the front would be great in that case
Great video. Very nice adventure in blistering cold weather.
Thanks!
You are really a brave guy, thanks for this nice and adventurous video.
Thank you! Appreciate that. 🍻

Great, someone left a shelter for him, hi hi!
Yes I was happy it was still standing. I built this a few months earlier
Was hoping you came back to this spot.thank you for sharing !
Glad to hear it. I felt like it deserved a revisit for sure. Super pleased with how it turned out
Nice to see you guys again today
Thank you. Same to you
At first I thought you were just sleeping with that fur. Then I saw the -15 F and thought “wow Ted is a hearty dude to survive a night that cold wrapped in a fur. I was glad to see you emerge from your sleep system, made me feel better about myself having never open bivouacked at that temp! Haha. I’ll keep my -20 F down bag!!
Haha I hear you I think with my Parka and cloths I would have been ok with that Fur it's a Musk-Ox and is crazy warm i could have rolled it around myself but it would have half fallen off at night so would have been cold then hot etc lol. Cant beat those sleep systems. At those temps u dont wanna mess around. Cheers bro
Wonderful creativity, brilliance and flair for interactive response, I love you
Thank you 😁
Cool video Ted! Did the shelter hold the heat pretty well? Good to see you're getting some good use out of that fur!
thanks Jim. Ya the shelter was an awesome dead space the roof dripped off the sides when I was in there with the fore. Def went above freezing. cant beat that pelt
Boys back to Shawn's in the spring to skin some ash trees and work on your bunkies.
@@douggibson9084 I know right. That project is dieing to be finished
Ted Baird that’s great. I imagine the snow helped as insulation some too.
Doug Gibson indeed we will be
no butterflies or snowflakes here - men only. And I have this vision next fall of a mama bear cautiously poking her head around the entry corner and checking out the beautiful shelter and thinking.....whooaa this is cool!! Great video. Thanks for the great show!
Thanks a lot! Yes I wonder if a bear will spend a night there lol.
Hi. Here in Kanaltal this winter is proving to be very strange: it has snowed very little and the temperatures have remained above average freezing. Little snow means little thaw and little water for this spring. The winters of the past century enveloped us with a blanket of snow of at least one meter, from mid-November to March with temperatures of -12 C. Your shelter is more and more comfortable and that fur blanket is wonderfully suitable. Ermes Ivo and Wanda, bye from NE Italy
Hi Ermes Ivo and Wanda that's sad that the winters of the past are no more. Winters r changing here also. Not as cold as they once were. It's nice to have these beautiful cold crisp days still. Hopefully u get another nice winter of the past in the future. That for watching take care

This is the first time I caught ur video. Enjoyed the camp out. That shelter was pretty cozy. Looking forward to other advertisers. Thanks for sharing. 👍👌😁
Hey Jane I'm glad you found the video and channel its good th have you here for the adventures. The shelter was pretty cozy 4 sure I was pleased with it. Thanks to checking it out. Cheers

Do it 👍
Another great video buddy. I've got the same military sleep system and love it. That's a great shelter, very sturdy ! Also noticed the lined work gloves. I wouldn't use anything else...Thumbs up !
Thanks Bro. Ya the sleep system is great. Gotta love the gloves also. Not the best when gets crazy cold but excellent 2nd pair for working with. They got wet and froze solid lol thawed them by the fire. Thanks for tuning in
Wonderful video. Thank you so much. Please post more.
Thank you lots more to come in the near future
Well, I like the silent narrative, helps focus on your actions - then the comments at the end are more personable, as well.

Thanks ! And yes thats the one major thing that should be reinforced 4 sure. But itbstood all winter even with another foot of snow. But nit really recommended lol 🍻
I'll Always Looking My Friend ! :)
You the man!
Great to see you improve the sides of your shelter! I’m really impressed with the bark roof. I’m thinking you left the snow on top for insulation, but it makes me think about how much weight it can hold! Either way, super cool video! Thanks so much for sharing this adventure with us!
Thanks brother. Yes I left it for insulation it really helped keep things cozy. But you are right that it should prob get an extra support log under the beam just incase. Pretty solid though didn't budge even when I was packing snow in it with my weight. I'm impressed with the bark too. Time will show how it is in spring but I bet itll hold up for a long while. If it had been from green tree I bet years amazing stuff. Glad u liked it. Cheers my man 🍻
Every time you and Heather bring out that fur blanket I always have just one thought... NAP TIME!
I envy you the beautiful winter weather.
Here in Germany rain, rain, wind, clouds not nice weather. Great video, it was nice to watch.
Thank you. I understand the feeling of not having the nice winter I love it as well. Sometimes when we get poor winters it's sad they are getting warmer it seems each year. It's nice to have these cold crisp days. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care cheers 🍻

I would put down spruce boughs on the floor before I laid the hide down. But otherwise, very cozy shelter.
It may be hard to see but there are boughs already down from my 1st visit. Youbaee right in that they are an important component for sure

Thought you did a great job fortifying your shelter. Looked quite comfortable. I carry the exact same saw in my pickup all the time . It cuts fast. With that fur around you , you looked like a old mountain man or buffalo hunter.
Lol I felt like one too. Looked like a game of thrones audition. It was very cozy set up and I agree it's a great saw. Hard to beat it. Thx for tuning in. Cheers 🍻
I would love to hear the story behind that beautiful muskox hide!
@@rwhelanable In 2008 my brother and I paddled a white water river called the Kuujjua river on Victoria island in the high Arctic of Canada. We finished the river then paddled on the Beaufort Sea back to the small Inuit fly in only Hamlet named Ulukhaktok formerly named Holman. We met a friend there and we traded some gear for the Musk-ox pelt. A number of years later we snowmobiled from Tulita northwest territories Canada on the Makenzie River, across Great Bear lake up to the Inuit community Kugluktuk (formerly Coppermine) then across a section of ocean called the Dolphin and Union Straight which is a section of the North West Passage all the way up to Prince Albert Sound and then to Ulukhaktok visiting our friend again that we originally traded for the pelt with. We camped the whole way in a canvas tent and sleept on our Musk-Ox pelt as our ground pad. On route we styed at a massive abandoned DEW line site on Lady Franklin Point. On both trips Many big fish were caught, animals seen including arctic wolves, muskox, fox, caribou etc
Wild adventures i hope to do again one day....and now we continue to use the pelt for winter camping etc 👊😎👍
@@TheRealTedBaird that is sweeeeeet!
My mother and I are knitters---my only, rather tame exposure to muskox is that of having paid extremely dear prices for its absolutely luscious fibre---spun to yarn that is head and shoulders above the finest cashmere wool.
So I think I know how yummy your pelt is to cuddle up in
@@rwhelanable definitely very amazing pelt
Thank you , Ted .
You bet!
Ted, That was just what I needed. It is -28 degrees in Minnesota today. Very "squeaky" like the snow you walked in. I love what you did to the shelter, and I love that big bear blanket. WOW! Did you harvest that one? Thanks for taking me along...ByeBye, Merry Ann from Minnesota
Hey Merry Ann :) -28 is bone chilling for sure! I bet if practiced we could make pretty accurate guesses of the temp based on the squeak of the snow lol. The Fur pelt I used was actually a Musk-Ox I did not harvest it but rather traded for it while on a trip in the high arctic with my brother. We got it in a tiny Inuit Hamlet called Ulukhaktok formally Holman on Victoria Island. Its so incredibly warm its amazing. Glad you enjoyed the vid. have a great day

Nonprob thx 4 comin along!
Hey Ted, with the snow load on the roof of your shelter, it crossed my mind that it could collapse, especially with the main support member only being tied to the birch tree with tree fiber. Apparently you weren't worried, but then it was you who built it. Nice outing!
Hey David definitely a valid concern a little support log would have helped ease some of my concern but it was def in my kind lol. Felt very solid however so all was well. Would have made sense to do that for safety but also just because that would suck royally lol Glad u liked it. Cheers mate
Little support logs rock, or perhaps I should say "log", when you don't have a forked trunk or sturdy lower branch for support. One rarely does. The support logs should be required for lean-tos using young mature trees for uprights. Kudos for making your own cordage. For honest-to-God bushcrafting, infernal parachute cord should never enter the picture. It should only be used as survival emergencies dictate. My concern with this shelter was the side facing the cliff face. I watched you build it, and noticed the gap there that precluded use of the rock as a shelter wall. When I tuned in here and saw those icicles hanging down, it was "Uh-oh!" You mitigated the situation well. If you favor this location perhaps you can expand the shelter next summer. Best wishes!
@@Tipi_Dan Thanks for all ure input appreciate it. One thing I liked about the iceacles is it was a testament to the bark roof. It helps up great and if it had leaked I would have had iceacles dripping through as they did on the sides. We had a freezing rain and a melt then a freeze while I was away from the shelter which is what caused the iceacles and luckily I spaced it just far enough from the cliff that the drip of the cliff was not an issue in the end. Kinda worked out nicely glad it did. Cheers my man hope 2 catch ya next time
Burn more birch and hardwoods. Very little heat energy in cedar and pine. I would like to see you do more hunting and trapping. True survival stuff!
Thanks for the feedback hardeood way better for sure. Id like to feature more food procurement for sure.
I enjoy your videos Ted and that is quite the shelter and it did its job when u got it snowed in. The only thing I would have done extra is got at least 3 small spruce a little taller than your opening, tied them together and closed that opening up a bit. Your fire was not going to last that long anyway, I would have put the fire out and blocked that opening.
Great video.
I enjoy watching.
All the best.
Always great videos. Thanks
Thanks Shawn!
I would have used the snow around your shelter,a lot closer to cover the bows, you made it look like hard work, salute to you though mate, stay well.
Super 😜✌️🔥 maybe stones round your fire would keep heat longer … and a Stone plate over the Fire would let you cook like an oven … flesh and Koffee 😜✌️🔥 maybe long term fire gives more comfort zone over night ….. but I can say you are a hard survivalist … I would freeze 🥶 to ice there 😜✌️🔥
First thing ive learned about winter and surviving it is,when you think you have enough fire wood to stay warm....collect 10x more.always.
100%
a nice hideout :)
😊
My old serrai design two person winter tent very good .small cannister of gas with the heater unit. And wood.
I also have a sierra designs tent they are awesome. Mine is a stretch dome and its been through hell and back. Gotta love em
Thank you! It was like I was there.
Cozy shelter!
Thanks it definitely was
Very nice and quiet, 😊
Thank you Natasha :) glad you enjoyed it
Respect from Tunisia 🇹🇳 ❤️👍
Excellent build! Thank you for sharing this video. Your techniques wiuld be excellent for making a good shelter from totally natural materials.
I am now absolutely convinced of the advisability of carrying a 7' X 9' tarp at all times while in the woods.
Again, thanks for the video.
😎💙💛
Yes wise idea to always carry a tarp. If we ever had to go back in time before modern material bark is a good roof but animal hides also
I think your video is very instructional. If caught in such a situation, with no tarp, one would be wise to begin construction ASAP, as it appeared to take quite a bit of work. This video shows what would need to be done, and does so very clearly.
@@BBQDad463 thanks. Yes i agree i do think a lot depends on the specific circumstances one may find themselves in. A quick snow bunker may be a better short term survival option it all depends. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks
Great work Ted. I watched the vid when you initially built that shelter. You just came back & “dove right in!”
That roast looked perfect roasted “Heathen Style” Winter camping is my favorite, even though everything is 50X more difficult. Just putting on your boots in the morning is a TASK. I always look forward to your content and I always learn from you. Thank you for that.
Hey Thanks a lot. There is def a lot to love about winter camping. It's great having 4 distinct seasons each bring their own sets of beauty and challenges. Winter can be tough 4 sure but no bugs solitude crisp days and a lot of beauty are hard to beat. Glad u getting something out of the vids. Loved the "Heathen style" too lol thx for the support Cheers ans catch ya later
Awesome video Ted
Thank you
Neat shelter - very stealthy from a distance. Enjoyed the visit!
Thanks! Ya I agree its really hidden away. Turned out pretty cool in that respect
Would you do a group of slightly limited people in the spring, summer or fall on a camping trip. Have bad knees, over 65 but would LOVE to experience an adventure like this
Like these videos better than " Naked and Afraid " I was a Super fan of that show. Your videos are Much Better.
Thank you yes the cold toughens a person those trappers in Alaska are amazing people
The shelter held up really well, nice.
Ya 4 sure about about a foot and and a half of snow and ice on it too. Pretty sweet
Man, watching you put those mounds of snow against the wall of bows made me exhausted! Good work on the insulation. Looked warm.
Thanks. It was quite cozy for sure
Amazing good video
Dude, get a prime winter buffalo robe like me and that's all you need for winter sleeping.
Ya that would be sweet..I think this Musk-ox pelt would do the trick also. It would make quite the robe.
Be sure it's a bull buffalo robe, their heavy but warm at any temp. My people used them for thousands of years.
Bulls are huge robes. I'm 6 ft tall and mine covers me from head to foot with lots to spare.
I could see musk ox doing the job too. Thanks for the video. I love winter camping in a shelter I make.
@@arapahosundancer I would love to have one if I get one I'll definitely get a bull thank you
