Thanks for sharing this information. We've had an LEC-540 for a couple of years and it's served us well. One question: at 2:13 you state that "you never actually touch the surface of the print head." When we first received our machine, as part of the maintenance tutorial held by the Roland sales rep, we were instructed to swipe twice across the print heads-back to front motion-using both sides of a moistened swab held flat against the heads (1 clean swab per print head). I've been doing this regularly during routine maintenance with no negative results and clean print tests. Thoughts?

I do the same as you and have done almost 5 years with no detriment to performance whatsoever. The engineer we use for servicing does the same thing too, I'd imagine Roland just state this to absolve themselves of people damaging print heads and trying to hold them responsible.

      Hi both,
The official line is not to swab the heads as its not usually necessary and the concern is that a damaged cleaning stick could possible damage the surface of the head. As long as care is taken it will be OK and there are occasions where this should be done for example to help unblock a stubborn nozzle.
      Hope this helps.

I run maintenance on a couple of these rolands, I wouldnt go wiping the heads every time as its a chance to damage the head, but i do occasionally find a fair amount of buildup on the head itself and as long as youre really gentle with it, I've had little to no negative results
