I'm planning to adopt the "wide on bottom, slim on top" silhouette more, because it suits me and I like it. And I'd like to bring a little more colour to my tops, even though it draws more attention to my inverted triangle shape. Just too depressing to wear dark on top all the time.

i am planning on rebuilding my wardrobe this year. Old favorites wore out and I am stuck with a hodge podge of mismatched stuff and lots of graphic tees that I dont wear much. My goal is to have a more cohesive wardrobe that feel confident in. I need more basics.

I love your video's - they are calming and there is no shaming at all. They are practical w/o too much of the minimalism dogma which can overwhelm. Also the love of the wardrobe - the whole point is to enjoy the clothes. For me having few items is not the goal - the goal is to enjoy and wear what I have and not to continue the consumerism. Thank you so so much!!

Things that really helped me with rebuilding, and then staying satisfied with the clothes I have:
    - Picking adjectives/mood words to identify the vibe I want for each kind of clothes (e.g. office, going out etc) and picking new items that match that vibe instead of the same kind of things over and over (and then being disappointed😆!) That also helped me identify gaps and changes I wanted to make.
-keeping track of items I bought and how much they cost. A real reality check! 😬
    - using a digital wardrobe to get more creative and satisfied with with what I have, and play around with capsules and outfits (I've been using Open Wardrobe for a couple of months and love it!)
    - playing around with styling. e.g. an outfit can look really different and more put together by tucking in, doing a French tuck, rolling up sleeves or cuffing pants, wearing a belt (or not), buttoning vs unbuttoned, trying a scarf on the handbag, over shoulders etc...

Great tips! I'm really happy with my wardrobe right now. Capsules really do pay off but like you said it takes time. What a great approach, I think the step of “test driving” new items is super-important, sometimes we don’t notice problems until we actually wear something for a day. Also, the Don’t Buy list is critical to stop repeating mistakes. When I analyzed my wardrobe, for example, I noticed I really don’t wear my 3/4-length sleeve items. I realized that they are just too warm for summer, but my arms get too cold in winter. I don’t want to wear arm warmers all the time, either. So, now they’re No-Nos, I just get long sleeves for winter, they can always be pushed or folded up. Certain fabrics are also on my Mo Buy list.

Last year I lost a lot of weight and basically had to start over my wardrobe. I think the biggest lesson I learned is to be realistic with my lifestyle. I am a Pre-K teacher so the clothes have to be easy to move in, comfortable, and easy to clean. While I love a well-tailored suit, trousers, and loafer - it's impracticable for my job. I do have a few of those pieces but I reserve them for the weekends. I have most of my wardrobe complete but would like to add more dresses and linen pieces into my wardrobe this summer. :)

Hi Val, Just enjoyed watching your channel for the first time after Googling 'year round wardrobe.' Since the pandemic started I've donated most of my printed tops that just didn't work with several of my patterned pants and have curated an interchangeable year round, four season wardrobe around jeans, pants, shorts and a few skirts in beige, white, cream and Grey colours. I am 73 and spend most days in jeans and a tee but as restrictions lift and the opportunity to be out and about more presents I hope to actually wear what I've got and see if I enjoy what I have lol. I now shop intententionally. Appreciate the way you present yourself in your video. Thank you! Rosie 👩‍🦳🇨🇦

I enjoyed this video. It helps me to understand the process takes time, and patience. They key is taking time to observe and make notes on past purchases. When I used to shop fast fashion, I couldn’t find what I really wanted to wear. I would buy what looked cute and stylish, but it was rarely right for me. Now that I buy used higher quality pieces, the process is leading to a curated wardrobe that I enjoy wearing.

It would be either buying things that are really missing from your wardrobe that would help it function better, or buying items that really make a statement and reflect what you want your style to be. A statement item would not be something basic like a tshirt, but maybe a top in a print or silhouette that really feels like you. Hope that helps! 😊

This was a great o er Jew and step by step broken down…thank you. I think I’ll be referring to this guide often. One of my biggest issues is weight fluctuations…sometimes I will go into a new season and literally not have any bottoms at all that fit. It’s harder not to ‘panic’ up then because I literally need something to put on my body. Then I have to buy what is quick and easy and affordable to get which sadly means more fast fashion then I would like. Trying to buy specific’ basic’ items second hand doesn’t work for me. I know going slow is ideal but also my style recently just changed quite drastically but even over a five year time period my style preferences would change a bit. Let alone the influence of fashion trend…they are there no matter what.

I would love to rebuild my wardrobe! Your break down of wardrobe planning is clear, concise and simple. I’m finding out for me that knowing what doesn’t work is as important as what does. Secondly, understanding that just because I like it doesn’t mean it’s for me. I like that you suggest to declutter slowly. Unfortunately, I’ve attempted the put everything on your bed and declutter process but was so overwhelmed I threw everything back in my closet. Lastly, to add on to a previous video about occasional wear, as someone who’s older it’s always helpful to a few classic dress up pieces even if you only wear it rarely. For example: this New Year’s Eve we decided to go to dinner somewhat last minute. I have a black silk blouse bought many years ago from Everlane, black tie waist pants, I layered a short pearl pendant, a short pearl strand that was my mom’s and a black blazer. My husband said what a nice outfit. I use this formula a lot. Sometimes substituting a turtleneck if it’s colder.

My goal is to buy only high-quality natural-fiber (plus the rayon /viscose/lyocell family) clothing that really feels good to wear. After analyzing my discards from declutterings, I realized that I don’t really wear synthetic-fiber items because they cause overheating and sweating, but also aren’t warm enough for winter. I bought them because I loved the style and the low price, but ended up taking them off and on repeatedly, then changing into something more comfortable. So, now that I can only afford a few new items I choose them based on comfort, mostly, and classic styles that won’t date quickly. Breaking my habit of browsing fast-fashion sites is key. Now I’ll only search for the fabrics I like, like cotton, and disregard the rest.

Great tips Val, agree with all of them. Especially how it takes time, often years to really understand what works for you each season. And it's a never-ending journey because our circumstances change (babies, pandemics...) and our wardrobe has to change with it. But you don't have to start from scratch again. And I agree, it's totally worth it! Because then getting dressed doesn't take much time and effort, and you can use your brain space for other things on the daily. If you so wish.

I wear and love most of my wardrobe regularly now, so my goals for next year are really just to shop even more mindfully, buying either second hand or if new only sticking to natural fibres where at all possible. On my list is a pair of straight leg jeans (I still only have skinnies! though I do love a wide leg smart trouser for work!), some cotton shirts/blouses as I only have one! and a few more basis tees in organic cotton. 😊

Growing up in the tropics and moving to Switzerland, I really have trouble building a wardrobe and now I realised I am only wearing my turtlenecks and simple long sleeves.
Being a minimalist, I am really looking forward to finally declutter those items that I think may keep me warm but feels scratchy and I never got rid of because I couldn’t let something of good quality go. But it’s now time and it has taught me a lesson that I don’t like scratchy, no matter how warm or good quality!😆 Excited to use these tips to build my wardrobe.
