I have also tried this with microgreens. My Wheatgrass beds and Pea Shoot containers grow so amazing because of it. Don't use it on the leaves, just a few teaspoons into the soil mixture! Probably work great for hydroponics as well!!
I’m planning of harvesting more seaweeds when I go back to the beach cuz it’s about 2.5 hours to drive there but I did it before and my tomatoes love it 😊 thanks Jeff great tips ♥️👍😊👩🌾
Stomata are typically open during the day to favor CO2 diffusion when light is available for photosynthesis, and close at night to limit transpiration and save water.
I live right on the ocean with a beach my neighborhood shares. I'm sure they would love for me to take as much seaweed as I want. When you walked past that crab I said to myself why the heck didn't he grab it. Lobster and crab are excellent in the garden. I also have an unlimited supply of clam, oyster, and scallop shells among others that I not only put a couple in my aquarium for my snails but pulverize into a powder to add into my garden as well. My Grandfather taught me a lot about how to grow a huge plentiful potato and tomato crop. Just using lobster, crab and clam shells plus whatever was left from the fish we filleted he had the most productive little garden I have ever seen. He threw in the shells whole and every year when he tilled it they were still there. The clam shells decompose very slow but continue forever to fertilize. I don't have a plant in my yard that doesn't have crushed shells added to the soil. Didn't notice any change to my blueberry bushes but my roses not only love it, they thrived on it. I always just bought Neptune brand spray for around $10 to use in the garden but this year am going to make my own. Just searching how others make theirs. I fish alot so grabbing up seaweed while fishing is a no brainer. Lots of precious kelp I think I will rinse out, chop, and use in a top mulch over the soil. That way it will not only cover the soil but feed it as well. Looking forward to the spring
so/many of the "dead crab" you see are actually empty shells that crabs shed and leave behind as they grow larger. they product a whole new shell! fascinating.
You asked for comments about the crabs. It may be due to ocean ph levels changing making it harder for shells to form correctly. AKA Acid rain. Thanks for your insights in gardening, I live near the ocean in Alaska but this is the first time I've collected kelp to use in my garden. Organic gardening most of my life for most of my food, but,,,, I don't know everything, I'm not that young anymore.
As many plants have their ph comfort zone so do many marine life forms. Specific to this example may be chemical reactions in solution to bind calcium in the formation of shells. Oyster babies now require special seeding water to start shell formation due to environmental changes in local ocean ph. It may seem like common sense, but that's also the same as your mention of using different sea weeds because they would each have different properties to contribute to a seaweed fertilizer formula. I hadn't thought about that until you said it, I was just using pure kelp, ignoring the abundance of biodiversity on the beach. You gave good clear easy to understand detailed information. It's very appreciated.
@@treethunderchild9022 You're so right. And just a tiny shift in not only water chemistry but even temperature can bind up elements such as Calcium...making life that much more difficult for shelled crustaceans. ... :(
Hi there! Very interesting video. I'd like to know if this foliar fertilizer can be used for orchids, desert Rose's or any flowers. How long can we keep this fertiliser and be still efficient? Thanks & kind regards from Mauritius island!
Hey Navin, yes, it will work great for those plants! And the fertilizer keeps quite long. The nutrients don't degrade, just keep it in a cool, dark place! :-)
ONLY SPRAY UNDERSIDE OF FOLIAGE WHEN ALL DAYLIGHT HAS GONE, VERY EFFECTIVE ON ORCHIDS AND SUCULENTS ONCE A WEEK AT FULL STRENGTH, VERY GOOD ON ANGRAECUMS. REGARDS TO THE MAURITIUS ORCHID GROUPE. IAN AND JANET PLESTED
I can say that the powder will be slightly different in its nutrient profile... Due to the processing... But I can still see it being valuable for plants needing those minerals and compounds. Not sure how cost effective it would be though!! Because you can buy 10 liter buckets of Pacific kelp extract from most organic fertilizer distributors. It's designed to be diluted into a foliar feed as well.
Also, if you are inland and don't have access to the ocean/beach, you can also use green algae from ponds and lakes. Not entirely the same, but works great and adds quite a bit of nutrients to your plants!
Definitely can't hurt Jack. Might not be as effective with plants like that...ones with tough waxy leaves....but won't do any harm. And it'll eventually get washed into the soil anyways. :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms that’s great thanks so much. Presumably the same deal for trees like bay trees and lilac? I heard the only things not to foliar spray are acid hating plants like rhododendron??
With the fertilizer shortage and increased prices, I would like to think farmers will be using foliar feeds on their crops to minimize the amounts needed, and also to utilize a broader spectrum of fertilizer choices. I would think that any organic and clean waste/source would be an option, allowing farmers to learn new ways and kinds of soil/plant nutrients to use, while saving buckets of money while doing it, with foliar feeds as an augment to other strategies.
Many stores sell dried seaweed designed to be eaten, such as wakame and kombu seaweed. Most that I see are from South Korea and Japan. Can I do this same process using those seaweed?
So glad I found your channel. I do have some questions I live in South Texas will sargasso seaweed work ? How long is the end solution good for? With fermentation what would happen if you aerate the process ? I thought fermentation would grow things you dont want
Hey, thanks so much for watching! Yes, the Sargassum will work (although I don't know if it can legally be collected). I don't aerate because this isn't a tea (aka compost tea)....this is a straight extraction of elements and nutrients.....so I don't care about the microbes and beneficial aerobic bacteria. Cheers!
Miss Emma is beautiful. I have Wakame flakes. I make dashi occasionally -- but what about store bought Fish emulsion. I use that too. Did you fall on those rocks and lose a tooth?
Yeah, people swear by fish emulsion... A lot of my customers are vegan, so I don't use any animal based fert on any of my plants or starters. No, lost the tooth playing football 20 years ago.... The 5 year partial implant finally fell out. For it fixed in February. Cheers mate

Here in Lake Erie we have a few different kinds of sea weed that I could collect, but I was wondering if weed from the lake is just as beneficial as the one from the sea/ocean. Also, does it make a difference if the weed is washed up on shore (and collect that) or it has to be still growing in the water just before picking . Thanks
Hi Lela! Freshwater algae and aquatics weeds will definitely have a different nutrient profile than those from the ocean. Not to say they won't be beneficial...I would still definitely use it! I always take the dried stuff and not the living plants from the water. Cheers!

Right on Emy... Once you make the fertilizer, it stores quite well, so don't worry about making "too much"!
Stomata are typically open during the day to favor CO2 diffusion when light is available for photosynthesis, and close at night to limit transpiration and save water.
That is correct, a direct quote from an online search.
I believe optimal time to foliar feed is a bout 15 minutes after lights go out

Oh yeah, just strain it and it'll be good to go.

If I just have access to dried powder kelp, can I just rehydrate it?
Do I have to ferment it or since it is powder can I use it fresh?
That's a great question. I guess it will depend on if that powder dissolves readily enough or not.

Thanks man! I will! Yes, dilute fish emulsion can be an excellent foliar feed!
such a pretty lettuce! what do you do about slugs?
Thanks Al! For slugs, I just do manual removal at night, followed by beer traps if it gets really bad

you need surfactant in order to the leave to take nutrients
Would be more effective with a wetting agent like Castile Soap

Hey Luis, I aim for twice a growing cycle...once early on when the plants are young, then again during the flowering/fruiting stage.
