This was great. Thank you so much!! Can you clarify under which conditions it is recommended to eat meat and take meat and bone broth?!? This has become a topic of many health protagonists in the US, since some recovered from some serious diseases by shifting to eating meat and sometimes mainly meat. Some also say that eating meat is necessary for brain health. Did Charaka and Sushruta recommend eating meat in certain disorders? Is it related to mitochondria health?
Eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) which has traditionally been based largely on meats is known to be health damaging that causes shorter lifespan. Going further and eating only "fast foods" like hotdogs, burgers and fries and pizza with pepperoni while ignoring a wide variety of vegetables and fruits is a prescription for early onset of health problems like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, AND cancer. The real value in eating vegetables and fruits and nuts and legumes is the abundance of cancer and cardiovascular preventive nutrients, among many other benefits. If someone has a severe deficiency of some essential nutrient that only meat can provide enough of to reverse the deficiency, then it will be helpful. But you have to be very careful of the quality of the meat, and for that you have to research the source. They should be grass-fed, free ranging, with NO injections of any kind. The best way to get that is to buy locally and know the farmer. Commercial (supermarket) meat production adds so much antibiotics that antibiotic resistance has become a big problem. Another issue is certain animal supplements, particularly growth hormones for quickly getting the animal's weight up to the most profitable amount more quickly. These growth hormones are not approved for human consumption because they are cancer-causing. But then you ingest that when you eat that meat! Another issue is the highly processed meats that are known to cause cancer. Another is the problem of creating cancer-causing molecules when barbecuing to a scorched crisp. We can even go a step further and consider the karmic effect of killing animals, but most people don't care, they just want the taste or convenience. The karmic impact doesn't disappear if you don't care to think about it. And we could also consider the very significant impact on the planet for growing the GMO corn and soybean feed for these slaughtered animals, and how the greed is destroying the Amazon rainforest for the sake of a few years of crop fertility. Basically, commercial meat is not sustainable. But wait, there's more to consider. The human digestive tract has evolved to handle primarily a widely varied plant-based diet and occasional "game" celebration foods. It is very different from the true carnivore's very short but highly acidic digestive tract of carnivores that don't let the waste hang around long. This is what those meat-only proponents either don't know or don't talk about. There is also the issue of the microbiome one has evolved and developed from previous generations. If your ancestors have been on a primarily flesh-based diet for many centuries (eskimos and other far-north or far-south peoples), it may not easily adapt to an abrupt switch to a plant-based diet, but it can adapt, there is no doubt about that. It just takes some gradual switching over a year or more. Stopping red meats should be the first to go. Then fowl, and finally fish. You will feel the difference in more lightness, more energy, more mental clarity. The real trick to switching to a plant-based diet is to make it an adventurous exploration of the vast variety of plant-based dishes. Just the multitude of Indian dishes that have no meat can take years to explore, and they are SO delicious. And when you successfully switch, you won't want to go back to eating meat. It just isn't necessary under normal conditions because there is plenty of protein in a variety of vegetables if you know where they are. For that I recommend myfooddata.com
Thanks for your question! Meat consumption is an oldest habit of human life. In Ayurvedic texts it is described to consume meat under certain conditions and its role in maintaining good health. In Charak Samhita it is mentioned that meat is nourishing when used for treating certain diseases, prepared and eaten under certain circumstances and in moderation only. Meat is not recommended on regular basis . It is advisable in certain conditions like-if a person is having very weak muscles, difficult to gain weight, very low in energy after chronic fever(in the form of soup),athletes/sports person after injury, bone and muscular injuries etc. Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita has mentioned the property of animals and their meat and the conditions to consume meat. Ayurveda believes on the principle of similarity is the cause of increase, so meat will increase muscle tissues in the body. At mental level, most of the non-veg food comes into the category of Rajas and Tamas, hence regular intake of meat can lead to reduction of Satva Guna which further lead to psycho-somatic diseases. Since the body and mind are closely related, psycho-somatic disorders(mental disorders) will consequently affect the physical health. Hence, Ayurveda recommends to consume meat in moderation and in certain conditions only and according to their digestive fire.
Many thanks - great presentation and great knowledge from both Dr Rini and Dr Girish. Please advise who each of those 4 beautiful white sculptures are in the background. Ta. Jai Guru Dev
