      Yeah and I remember rubbish, garbage were two different things rubbish you can burn. Like paper wrappers and milk cartons. Garbage you cannot it's mostly metal and food scraps. 73

      Dont forget the gumbans, jumbo, and chipped ham when you go to the Igle for those groceries!

  • @ronb6182
    @ronb6182 Рік тому +4

    Yin's got to hear this. He he gumband instead of rubber band, even at a young age like 4 years old " two wones for a pair. My nephew when he was 4 or so it was two sa em for two items. And of course Dahntahn for Down Town. Jagger for that dandelion type of thisle. Step on one in your yard bare foot and you know it. Some called it a Jagger bush but i always just called it a Jagger. Nebby for someone that cannot mind their own business.
    Chipped ham for thin sliced ham jumbo for bologna. Crick for creek. Jagoff for jerk. Pixburgh for Pittsburgh. Oh and lest not forget let go up to mount whershington to see the whole city of pixburgh. Mount Washington grand view avenue. Go there if you visit Pittsburgh. Also come through the fort pitt tunnels and see the city. 73

    I never left the Pittsburgh area until I went to school in Indiana after high school. When someone asked me if I was from Western PA, I said, “Yes. How could you tell?”
    “Your accent,” they said. “I don’t have an accent,” I replied. I soon learned the truth. 😂

    Pittsburgh is WEIRD. It's the largest city in Appalachia (connecting it with the SOUTH) BUT geographically it is in the NORTH EAST, and YET Culturally it's MIDWEST, It's NO WONDER she has her own language! In Pittsburgh one can get a Hoagie and a glass of POP. In Philly this would be a Hoagie and a SODA. In Chicago this would be a SUB and a glass of POP. Pittsburgh is just a "mashup" of regions that "Don't fit the narrative"

    Yinzer is actually a dialectical variant of Scots English. If you go to Ayrshire in Scotland, you can find people who say "dahn 'er" and "'n'at" to this day.
    And kudos to your partner. You can't find a more Pittsburgh Ulster Scots name than that. Or should I say "d'nat"? ;)

    I lived in the South Hills a couple times in my life (through elementary school and then as a young adult). Maybe because I lived in the suburbs and/or because we moved to the Midwest, but I never ever spoke like that. But I do understand Piitsburghese and enjoyed this video.

      I too have live in the South Hills born & raised (44yrs) and don't speak this way. The only thing I say is yinz. Most of the people I talk to don't either. I believe a lot of it is forced, or to be funny.

      I grew up in the Sahside Flats and never once heard someone say yunz instead of yinz. I know there r areas that say yunz just not in Sahside, in my experience.

      As a country boy about 45 min north of the Burgh I always got the impression that yunz'ers are the hillbillies of Piksburgh . We say roogh for roof worsh for wash, and its always slippy never slippery. The list goes on we don't even pronounce the football team right, its the Steelers, but we gotta say Da'Stilers. It's kinda awful hilarious n'@ sometimes.

    I’m a native Pittsburgher but have lived away from the city 10 years longer than I lived there.
    I can still do a fair approximation of Yinzer, but it’s hard work.
    I never had much of a Yinzer accent to begin with, though…
