I’ve owned mine since 1999. It’s a magnificent airplane. About to upgrade avionics again from the Garmin 530 panel to all glass. The engine in the TR182 is the best engine ever put into any airplane. The landing gear is the most bulletproof retractable gear in any airplane. It loves long trips up high cruising at 160 knots as much as weekend burger runs. Super comfortable and efficient.
Any kid who grew up playing MSFS in the 90s…this was one of the first GA aircraft they became intimately familiar with. And of course, the Lear 35A was THE business jet…along with the Sopwith Camel being the quintessential WW1 biplane…
Partnered in a 68 182L, with the places i’ve gone and the loads I’ve carried, I’d never leave a stiff leg 182 for a retract. Ever. Ultimate rough field GA aircraft.
Most of my limitied time from the Dreamtime is in 182"s and I absolutely love them. Do have a 210 endorsement again from the Dreamtime but the 182 is my all time favourite, can't beat the 40 degree's of flap depnding on load, but I never flew heavy. Took an old banger from Adelaide to Hamilton, hood lining hanging down, but had new engine and it went like a rocket. I think from memory stall was about 40 kts full flap. Once you have flown 6 cylinders you never go back, so much power and so smooth and yes you are right about carbie icing.
Great video mate. The RG182 is my personal favourite too. It definitely doesn’t really like rough strips with those little tyres, but that would be the only complaint. A great machine
first..the gear is reliable as any well looked after in any other aircraft...second it's a sweet 4 place cross country plane without paying a premium for six seats with the same useful load ...as a alternative if the gear down and welded is your thing consider a King Kamai 182 with the 300 hp Continental IO-550 ..pretty much the same performance and you can add bush tires to make it a decent back country camping/family plane
When I got back into flying again, I wanted to buy a 182RG. I was renting one at an FBO/flight school getting back up to speed. One day I came in and the RG was down for maintenance. I asked what the problem was and was told the actuators needed replacing. I then asked how much are those? 10K each was the answer.... At that time I decided to buy a fixed gear Skylane. Been very happy ever since....
Most 182RG's have been in service for 40+yrs with only routine landing gear maintenance. One 30yr owner in our area confirms the same - never done a repair or Service Bulletin. Our 1978 (& most) have original actuators and powerpack has never been overhauled, and continues to checkout as healthy. Performing nose landing gear SEB95-20, and main landing gear SNL86-49 Service Bulletins help protect from ever needing to replace actuators. Issue is most Owners/Operators perform neither SB and even so gear system reliability is excellent.
Great review. My Comanche has the O-540 which gives us 250 hp. I do agree that the 182 is just about the best all round airplane for the value. And while the RG definitely gives you more speed, those gear are janky at best. I would almost prefer the fixed gear 210, without the strut. You get the power and the speed and what amazing views.
Great video. I felt the elevator on a normal 182 and found it quite heavy. Sydney Flight Training at YSBK has one of these as a training aircraft. Did you know that the Lightspeed Delta Zulu headset has a carbon monoxide sensor ? Great idea. Thanks
The fact is the parent company of Cessna is also the parent of Lycoming so the nose gear space idea is a bit of a stretch. When you compare the speed advantage of the RG and offset the costs of maintenance on the fixed gear, unless you’re absolutely anal about a few knots, it’s not worth the difference. As Bill Lear said,”If it ain’t on the airplane, you don’t have to fix it.” Older pilots will also find insurance costs skyrocketing with the complexity of retractable gear once they pass seventy years of age.
These were two separate companies when this aircraft was built. Continental engines is in Wichita and so is Cessna... There's probably some truth to the story for the two neighbors to end their many years and many models with continental engines

I love the 182rg on msfs2020. I can max payload and fuel and it still climbs out!

I can't argue with that, fixed gear has its place.
This with the turbo normalized engine would be just *chef's kiss*
oooo yeah!

Beautiful plane hey. So often the story, all the money spent on the engine and nothing cosmetically! Well better that than the other way around...
The 182 is one of my favourite GA aircraft to fly, I'd love to experience flying a 182RG, awesome looking aircraft and great video mate!
It really is a great machine. Thanks for watching!
Certainly enjoyed flying her 3.2 hours when getting my CSU and RG endo almost 12 months ago Michael. Hanging out for some more 182 time!!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment Dave!

Good point, you could do a lot better for rough strips
@@DeadstickAdventuresstill, a small price to pay for a great aircraft
Looks like a nice plane.
She's had some money spent on her!
nice cool video. good elaboration. I have flown RG for 15 hours
Glad you liked it!
Nice video
Thanks for watching!

Ouch, those actuators are not cheap!

Depends where you're landing really. You have to really want the extra speed to justify the extra maintenance cost. Personally I'd have a 182R
fixed gear 210?

Thanks for watching, yeah the controls are quite heavy on them! Did not know that about the Lightspeeds, sounds like a great feature.
Flew the 172 RG and the 210 I’m sure this fills the gap.
Yep its much better than the 'ol gutless cutlass
Yesterday was Clyde Cessna's birthday. It should be a bigger deal.

Issues sourcing replacement parts for the gear. 1200 produced. Great plane.
No doubt!
A bit rare here in Aus though...
Indeed!
STC = Supplemental type certificate
Ah good point!
Would love a 182 in any form! 😂 if anyone wants to give one away let me know 😂
Me too!
Eeeeh surely one of the most boring aircraft to fly......And your never to high in one.....fly a stable approach !
Boring?! No way
how to tell people you've never flown one without actually saying so
