- Here is a great example of a battle between a Hall of Fame pitcher and a Hall of Fame hitter in a regular season game from 1979. Camera stays on the batter and pitcher. In the 90's Fox Sports started to show many angles of fans, dugout etc. I prefer the simple.
Loved all 3 of those guys...Yaz, Fergie, and Sundnerg. Hawk Harrelson announcing before later being corrupted by the Chisox.
I had the good fortune of seeing Jenkins toss a complete game 3-hitter against the Yankees at Fenway Park in 1977. Trading him away was one of the dumbest moves the Sox ever made. Thanks, Zim.
And they traded him for a pitcher who would never pitch in mlb again.
You mean the cubs. Fergie won 20 games in a row 6 yrs strsight. Cubs traded him to Rangers after a 13 - 16 season. He then goes 25 13 with rangers. At least they got Madlock for him. Traded a 21 yearold Guy Named Joe Carter for Sutcliff. Had Palmiero and grace and kept grace. Traded 23year old Maddox. Ruinened Woods and Priors careers. Yet left that POS Sosa get his hitting coach fired. That was Billy Williams.
@@shawnyoung8752 Actually after the Cubs traded him to the Rangers, Texas traded him to the Red Sox 2 years later for the 1976 season. He stayed 2 years in Boston and Zimmer dumped him back to Texas just to get rid of him. Jenkins was one of the members of the famous Buffalo Heads who ridiculed Zim and he got rid of all of them. Cost Boston the '78 division title.

@@shawnyoung8752 Bill Lee and three of his teammates, Bernie Carbo, Fergie Jenkins and Jim Willoughby, formed a group called the Loyal Order of the Buffalo Heads that second-guessed Zimmer at every opportunity. Zimmer and Red Sox management broke up the group and all were gone by the start of the 1979 season. The entire affair is covered in detail in Peter Gammons' excellent book Beyond the Sixth Game. I don't know how Yaz did it, but he did. OVER 400 career homers and 3,000 career hits. with that stance, and big bat.

The note during the video that Yaz set new AL boundaries as the first to 400+ HR and 3,000 hits or better rubs raw for Tigers fans. Al Kaline ended his career in '74 with 399 HR and 3,007 hits. There had been a Kaline HR in the '58 season negated due to a rainout, just one of the fortunes of the game.
Fergie was dealing for that at bat. Pin point control and a workhorse on the mound.
Fergie major superstar in NL in 60's and 70's.
Not as much press as he should have gotten due to log jam of NL superstar pitchers.
Marichal, Seaver, Gibson etc etc etc.

Two underrated greats
I don't know if I would call them, underrated/Nichloas. both are in the Hall...here go a few under-appreciated GREATS who should be in the baseball HOF. Bill Buckner, Keith Hernandez, Steve Garvey, Pete Rose, Dave Parker, Al Oliver, Rusty Staub, Darrell Evans, Albert Belle.

His stance changed over the years. Here he is using the crouch, but if you check out footage from 1967 thru the mid-70s he stood erect holding the bat high over his head. The know of his bat would be directly behind his ear. Check out the 1967 WS Film or his HR off of Seaver in the 1975 ASG.

No, but has was damn good and as consistent as Ted over a very long career. It's no knock on him: Ted was one on the 10 best ever, Carl probably top 30.

Red Sox manager Don Zimmer made a point of getting rid of all the grumblers in the clubhouse. A bunch of them led by Bill Lee were called the Buffalo Heads and all of them were gone by the start of the 1979 season.

@@jstrahan2 To put it in context, Jenkins missed the 2nd half of the 1976 season due to an Achilles tendon injury and wasn't pitching well during the 2nd half of the 1977 season, so many considered his best days behind him. His rebound in 1978 with the Rangers came at a shock, so it wasn't like they were trading away Jenkins in his prime.
