New Girl was always inconsistent and we all knew it but the highs were always good enough to make the lows not a big deal. It also ended on a high note, and more than most shows of that time period it captured a generational vibe perfectly-where many shows of the time featured wealthy successful people (i.e. Modern Family, or even The Office honestly), New Girl was like an inverse Friends where everyone was Phoebe and no one was Monica. Everyone in New Girl struggled and floundered and coming out right after the '08 crash, predicting gig economics, Craigslist housing, etc, it hit all the right marks. It took what, 7-8 years for most characters to find some kind of peaceful middle class comfort. Anyway, it was an uneven show and I don't think any fans would argue against that, but at the end it was not too crass, not too dated, not too mean, not too saccharine, just baaaarely the right balance of cringe in the cringe era of tv. The perfect low stakes cathartic comfort food.

I think what people don’t realise about sitcoms, is that characters need to be problematic, not only to be relatable, but to drive the show forward. Think from a writers perspective how quickly a show would end if all characters were emotionally/mentally healthy. Shows don’t last 8 seasons if the characters are perfect.
Have you ever noticed a lot of sitcoms involve a minor problem that could be solved with good communication but decide to escalate it and it becomes the plot of the episode?
I think the main thing that causes situations in a situational comedy is the characters themselves.

Aw man, I really hoped this would be a video about how Jess was not the same character at the start and at the end, and how she did end up becoming the person they relied on to look after them (which was made apparent by the show in the scenes before she left for jury duty). That they ditched her character and the clear potential for growth once we get to mid-late seasons. New Girl never died, but the considerate writing of Jess did, slowly. Also I thought Raegan was kind of cool! But the way the exit of Jess was framed made her role in the group - and how differing that was from her character initially - apparent. It's actually kind of sad!

  • @Chololatation

I think the show realized this about jess and when she left for jury duty, they noticed Jess was the glue for the gang in the show. This was important for everything after because when she came back, SHE became the background character who HELPED guide the others to their better end. Without her, most of them wouldn't have changed to what they became. I think she didn't change because in the show, it was kind of showing that she didn't need to change. What she brought the group was parts of them they needed. Hope that makes sense.

  • @ryanpayne4401
    @ryanpayne4401 Рік тому +48

I gotta disagree with that point. I actually liked Reagen being introduced, while it was obvious she was written as a sex object & was added as a fill-in for Jess. I saw her as a breath of fresh air, after seasons 3 & 4, the group had gone through so many weird scenarios that it was nice to see a normal person get thrown into the loft & see from an outsider’s perspective of the gang. Which I thought made the show funnier on rewatches, especially in episode 10, “goosebumps walkaway.”
I liked seeing Nick try to get out of his way to get the girl, given all the insecurities & self-doubts he has. I’m a big fan of Schmidt & Cece getting married & trying to live the married life, led to my favorite bit, “Are you the criminals? From the Stattistics?!” Also having Winston become more self independent & self confident in himself was great.
I was not a fan of Nick & Jess as a couple. Even when they were at their best in season 2, I did not like the idea of them as a couple, so when Reagan & Nick became one, my thought was they’re gonna try to move away from Jess but it became obvious after episode 14 of season 6, that they had no character depth for Reagan & I was sad. I thought see could’ve been a great side character for Nick’s growth

  • @swaggygirl3516

I disagree about Jess, I thought she was grating in the beginning when they played up her adorkable traits but once they tone down the quirkyness, i thought she could be very funny, i love the way she delivers her lines and she's good at physical comedy too.
Overrall i don't think the show could have existed without her, supporting cast is great but a lot of highlights do come from Jess being a foil to other people's antics. Although the writing of her character did downgrade in the later seasons, the writers just took way too much time to get her and Nick back together and her attitude towards Nick in season 6 was just painful to watch. Jess's thing was always that she was stronger than she looked and her determination and willingness to stand up for herself was a great character trait to oppose her dorkynes. She became spineless in season 5 and her character became so painful to watch. The episode when she tried to get Nick and Cece together on a misunderstanding was so frustrating, who would try to make their ex and best friend get together ?? She was never that clueless or that selfless before.
Also yes Reagan was boring and overstayed her welcome, that whole situation with Jess and Nick was another can of worms, she had more chemistry with Zoey than anyone else. They should have brought back Lizzy Caplan.
And I don’t think there was a day new girl really died, sure the episodes were uneven but season 7 was really good and it should have been longer

A character being hateable doesn't make them the worst. I hate Schmidt being obliviously evil sometimes but the fact that they were able to get me to have strong feelings, even negative ones, about a fictional character, is a sign of a strong character. Jess is great because of how she doesn't change despite pressure to fall in line. Her individualism is a strength.

Having watched Moonlighting, the show didn't die because the leads got together. It died because the stars got too big for it. They were both off doing their own projects and didn't have time for the show, so the characters weren't on screen as much and it was clear they weren't committed to the show anymore. The writers had to rely on the less strong and interesting side characters and nobody cared about them. I think if the actors hadn't become stars, especially Willis, then maybe they might have been able to explore the relationship more. As it happened, they didn't and the show gave birth to the Moonlighting Curse.

Honestly, i love this show because every character brings so much to the table. I don't think that Jess is a bad character, and i don't think she is as selfish as you make her up to be. Like ... The way dhe acts when she realizes she still loves Nick, but he is with Reagan is the complete opposite of selfish. I think she is not perfect, but definitely not bad enough to place in the same group as say, Carry from SATC. I think she is just guilty of not being the main character, which i think it speaks to the writers being so good at developing the supporting cast. That's why we dont miss Jess... Not because she's awful, but because the rest if them are so good on their own

She was asked why it took so long for Lorelai and Luke to get together, and why in general stories moved so slowly. She said that once you make a step forward in a storyline, many other possible storylines are suddenly closed. You have to think carefully what you’re losing, and what new paths you may create. She learnt this while writing for Roseanne: “Make the small big, make the big small.”

You have a valid opinion, but I completely disagree. Like someone else said in the comments when Jess left the show for a season it was not nearly as good. Jess makes the show, “she’s the glue” she is the perfect character for the role and any other personality in her position would not have worked with the show’s dynamic. I personally think that the show started going down once Cece moved into the loft. Jess is a necessary fit for the show

I don't like specifically how they sent Jess off to jury duty. They needlessly introduced two or three opportunities for her life to change dramatically, knowing she wouldn't be around to see them through, then when she came back, it was to nothing; square one. Acting principal gone; lawyer Daniel gone; Juror 237B was nothing. Truly contrived drama that didn't even result in anything. Weird.

I agree with you that the show died in Season 5. I didn't like Reagan's character for the same reasons you didn't. She just wasn't funny. I think they should've kept Nick and Jess together all of Season 3 and I guess for conflict reasons they could break up in Season 4 only to have Nick's character grow and mature. That is to say I think it would've been cool to see Nick's character have a "Pam walking on hot coals moment" from the Office. I feel like in Season 5 Jess should have went on some teaching retreat because then we wouldn't have lost Principal Foster due to her choosing jury duty. Also, during that time they should have built on Cece's relationships with the guys instead introducing a new character.

    You should explore Moonlighting.
I think you'll find, as I have, just recently watching the series and not having grown up with it, that the analogy for the whole, "Will they or won't they, if you get the two leads together then the romantic tension is gone and with ruin your show just look at Moonlighting," thing that everyone sights is actually a bit wrong. That wasn't what ruined that show. That show was about a detective agency solving mysteries, the second they dropped that and did a four part soap opera at the tale end of season three that was very unfocused due to outside production issues is what ruined that show. Season four just makes things worse by splitting the leads up, I.E. they don't even share a scene together for half the season, and having Maddie marry a random guy she met in one episode was completely and unbelievably our of character. I have yet to get to season 5 because what used to be a fun mystery show became a slog due to unfocused writing and forgetting what the premise of the show was.

I wish more sitcoms would learn from The Office and Brooklyn 99, where the main couple gets together early and it just stops being the focus of the show, it's called SITUATIONAL comedy not romantical comedy for a REASON.
Getting the main couple together shouldn't kill the show, it should be a step on an evolution of the show.
That said, New Girl is one of my favorite shows because of it's strong characters, but I just think the relationship stuff was poorly handled unlike shows like Brooklyn 99 and The Office where the writers knew how to shift the relationship to the background of the show's focus, where, in my opinion is it's right place.

The "will they won't they" curse is why some of the best sitcoms are the ones that turned the cliche on its head. Seinfeld had Jerry and Elaine's relationship already be in the past. Third Rock From the Sun had Dick and Dr Albright hook up in the very first episode. Community was too, well, Community for a conventional dynamic to ever really take hold between Jeff and Britta. All three freed themselves from the limitations of the standard "will they won't they" and were better for it.

Oh man, I forgot about Reagan. She suuuuuuucked. Jess might not have been particularly funny, and I absolutely agree that the character was at times DEEPLY irritating and made me want to slap her, but she was also sort of the sun that held the rest of the planets of the cast in place. Her maternity leave (completely understandable IRL) was an in-universe star nuke that sent the planets of the rest of the cast flailing off into parts unknown. All of the other characters and actors are great, but the show was purpose-built to orbit them around Jess, and whatever other failings and inconsistencies it had, it definitely nailed that part (as evidenced by how horribly it went when she was removed.)

Sounds a bit like someone is projecting their issues with women in their own life onto this fictional character and hoping to be vindicated by strangers on the internet...lol. No character growth? Duh, it's a comedy-characters aren't supposed to grow much in a comedy. Furthermore, I think this level of analysis just isn't really necessary or appropriate for a show like New Girl. It's not meant to be a great work of cinema, it's a sitcom. It's Friends for Millennials.

  • @judeannethecandorchannel2153

I'm new to the channel. Could never endure a full episode of New Girl and I don't even know why. I'd liked Zoey in everything else but as soon as I saw the ad for this show I was like "Oh SH*T" they're going to take her 500 Days of Summer persona and beat it into the ground while making it one note.
Part of what was so good about 5:00 days of summer is precisely that summer wasn't really the magic pexie dream girl that Tom wanted her to be. When she cries during the graduate we know that there's some profound grief that she's having probably about her parents divorce which is when she made the dramatic decision to cut her hair which was apparently life altering. So she's got her own internal life that Tom never understood. But just comes along and so she happen in her life I don't know I was never able to watch the show long enough to figure that out.
I just think that that twee presence that Zoe just her nail had was really charming but to overplay it is, almost needless to say, going to be sickly sweet.
Or whatever insight I can muster so that I can leave a comment on this video, because now that I'm new to the channel, I want to support it! We UA-camrs have to stick together…

I loved the show from start to end. I think they realized early on that Zooey wasn't meant to lead the show, so they made a wise decision to pivot to it being an ensemble - such a great cast! And Cece / Hannah Simone should've gotten more attention in your video, in my opinion. At first, I thought they were just throwing in another TV-friendly 'hot girl,' it turned out she could be silly, heart-warming and, yes, very funny too. I would say that Winston at least started out as the weakest character as they had to make that last minute switch to Lamorne once DW Jr.'s show got picked up. But, that said, he ended up being one of the most complex characters by the end. Through radio shows, the cat fascination & being a cop, I loved seeing Winston evolve. I think they did a great job with couples too. Nick/Jess, Winston/Aly and yes, married Schmidt/Cece. In my opinion, actually allowing the single people to become couples didn't diminish the excitement of the show. Lastly, yes, Reagan's character was certainly forced to exist to fill the gap of Zooey taking time. That said, I did like how she pushed and challenged Nick in ways that were very different from how Jess pushed him - And there's nothing better than an uncomfortable Nick. Yes, there were peaks and valleys when it came to the quality of the show, but it's a talented cast of actors and fun characters that I couldn't get enough of even by the end. ~~JFK! FDR!~~

I would just restart from the beginning and get to reagans era and be like, “I’m good”- but the series really didn’t stop being *funny* until the rushed 7 season. I think Reagan worked as a foil, I really liked her interactions with Winston and the brief moment of bisexual visibility, but I was happy to see her go. Season 7 on the other hand was just… bad. But it wasn’t their fault, and I really appreciate jake and Zooey going out of their way to make sure fans got a wrap up season. The shows strength, and the reason I started watching it was the dynamic of the guys in the loft and how they acted and talked to each other. Which was apparently directly based on the creators own experience of living with guys. But after the 2nd season it became clear to me that they didn't have any idea of where the show would go and didn't have any of the characters fleshed out beyond their current situation. Which basically lead to them attempting every TV cliche in a 'throw it at the wall and see what sticks' approach. The worst part foe me was when they started inserting celebrity cameos into the show and completely dragged it from reality. Chef ramsay cooking for Jess, the prince episode, and so on. These were no longer normal people living in the normal world, they were tv characters living in fantasy LA. And then of course they completely alter everyone's character by the later seasons based on nothing more than a line or two thst comes out of nowhere. Winston randomly decides he likes investigating things, a trait he had never shown, so he decides in about 30 seconds to become a cop. Schmidt and CeCe completely reverse everything about each other so that he stops working and she is arbitrarily made a successful business woman, despite being shown to have no skills or ability to do anything. And of course nick is made a great writer out of nowhere and they throw away the entire thing about his dream being to just work at the bar because that's what he likes. It's all just such bad writing for a show thst started out with such a relatable premise.

As someone else said, NG never got bad enough to not be enjoyable to watch---although I straight up skip the Elizabeth episodes and the ridiculous Jess and Nick break up episode. I remember being completely caught off guard with both of those storylines and they sucked. Reagan was okay but I don't see why 1. She was needed in the first place. The main gangalang was legitimately perfect and 2. Deeeefintely don't see why they had to pair her with Nick. All that being said I love this show and it's a really good comfort rewatch.
