I saw Rhys Chatham & the Din when we played a gig together in an old "gallery" near Tribeca in NYC. I don't even think it was Tribeca yet! It was around 1980. Sonic Youth was also on the bill. Their drummer didn't show up. Rhys had a drummer and someone banging with hammers on steel pipes. Rhys played one note while reading sheet music. I'll never forget it! Fantastic! My band was Screaming Cows. I still have the flyer somewhere 😂❤

What a great interview! I've read and heard many interviews with Rhys over the past 30 years, but this one covers his entire history. He's kind of like the Forrest Gump of Modern Downtown Music... he finds himself in every situation which had a huge influence on experimental music from the mid 1960's-early 1980's. I think the English marxist experimental composer he was thinking of was Cornelius Cardew. Also on the first concert at Yoko Ono's loft.... Terry Jennings performed some of his incredible solo piano music. The music could be categorized as minimal... The dynamics are soft, low, and delicate. It gives the impression of wanting to disappear.... just remarkable works.
