RICHARD LEO JOHNSON is a one-of-a-kind guitar maverick who has carved out his own territory in the wide-world of extended acoustic guitar technique. Self-taught and very visually-oriented (Rich is widely-acknowledged as an important architectural photographer) Rich and I made a concept album, "Who Knew Charlie Shoe" some years ago and we've have toured extensively as a duo, opening for the likes of KING CRIMSON and the Tony Levin Band. Lots of stories about that and more.

Bendian insists on inserting himself as much as possible into the conversation, to the point of repeatedly interrupting Kerry before he finishes his thoughts. Such inane prattling is hard to take. Kerry Minnear is the outstanding composer of the modern era.

So fascinated to listen to my ex next door neighbour talk of the housing estate we both grew up on, although Andy must be about 8 years older than I, and as he was already starting to get a name for himself with the Helium Kids, it was only ever on the rare occasion that he'd speak to me. One of those occasions, was me sitting on the door step during the summer holidays, rather bored, and Andy appearing with a magnifying glass where he promptly taught me how to pop ants. I doubt he'd remember that but I do. I was in awe as a kid , from listening to him practice through the wall of our adjoining bedrooms, buying Black Sea as the band went from strength to strength while I was serving in the Military to the present day, serving as a teacher of English, Drama and sometimes - art and music. Andy is an inspiration.

Richard has been the most distinctive, noble, elegant, quintessential voice in the Canterbury panorama. His contributes as a bass player in such a band like Caravan, Hatfields and Camel, were precious, let alone his collaboration in my personal all time favourite album: Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom❤🎉

Reading Bill's biography "Lunar Notes" was a true eyeopener for me! Bill is the cubist nephew of Jimi Hendrix, and I'm glad he's still alive to tell his story. I happen to listen for the first time to "The Magic Band Plays the Music of Captain Beefheart - Live in London 2013" recently, and I'm blown away by the way the music is "recalibrated". The sound of this band is so ULTRA-AVANGARDE , it hurts! I'm wondering if Bill ever got the Belgian Chocolates I send him after reading his book and bying "We saw a Bozo under the sea"???

This is incredible. Kerry is an absolute legend and a composing genius. Your linear notes from your album quote says it all. In a funny way(see what I did there? 😜) you almost want to shake Kerry and say "HEY, do you realise what your music has done to us?". He comes across as such a gentle, polite guy and absolutely matches his singing voice 100% 🤘🏼

  • @jamiepastman5594

Kerry is my number 1 musical hero of all time. There’s so many reasons to respect his work: his singing, his writing, his vibes solos, his hammond b3 sound and approach and moe. i’d just like to focus on his clavinet playing. A crazed combination of Stevie Winder and Bela Bartok, Kerry’s clavinet playing is completely unique and unlike any other prog keyboardists. His ability to play endless rhythmic permutations (see the live version of So Sincere) of a cool clavinet riff is astounding. He may be an English gentleman, but he’s as funky as the deepest P-funk track.

As a music theorist myself (I teach at a college) I consider KM a genius. And perhaps more importantly, a huge inspiration. Thank you for this interview. Just as the one you did with Tony Banks, very well informed, as a conversation between musicians. No non-sense. No showing off or too intellectual. Loved it.

In many respects, Gentle Giant did the right thing by finishing up after the Civilion tour. They were true to themselves. I don't like Genesis of the 80s or Yes for that matter. ELP came back in the 90s and that was a disaster. Also, they resisted the temptation to reform and kudos to them for that. They were one of the greats of prog rock and their music stands the test of time.

What I always love about Tonys music is that when everyone else turns right he takes a screeching handbrake turn left which is pretty much what he says. It makes for some wonderful & spine tingling music.

At about 51 minutes he talks about the Avalon Ballroom recordings - has it ever been confirmed which line-up this was? Because I've seen it mentioned that it was 1966, so therefore pre-Jeff Cotton, but Jeff here is implying that it's 1967 and he's playing on it. Anybody know what the truth of the situation might be?
