I have to laugh at how this record pops and crackles and skips a bit…my copy does the very same thing. Been wearing the grooves off it since I bought it all those years ago. Jerry Jeff, you’ll never die as long as we’ve got these songs and the wonderful memories of having you with us. Ride on, cowboy.
The album 'Contrary to Ordinary' is in my top ten of all my time, been playing it since 1978. He gave us Mr. Bojangles, to my ears no-one will better his rendition. One of a kind, may his God go with him.
I wanted to thank you for posting this song...one of Jerry Jeff's best...and to think you can't get this song anymore. This version remains my favorite by far. As I recall from the album liner notes it was recorded in someone's living room in Austin. What a treasure.
I was lucky enough to see JJW in a little club in Nashville back in the early 80s. Maybe 100 people. I brought 2 girlfriends who had never heard of him. I had a t shirt made with Contrary to Ordinary made for the show. By the middle of the show the girls were in tears. The next day they went out and bought EVERY cassette of his.....I know he was huge....but I never understood how he wasn't as big as Willie or Waylon.... radio politics? Great memories
@@scottsandquist5381 Great story. And yes I do believe it was radio politics. They played him in Austin like crazy, but he never seemed to "break out." But knowing Jerry Jeff he probably didn't care cuz he was "Contrary to Ordinary."
Been listening to this since the 1978 album, then cd and now via technology I know nothing of. Hearing the scratches takes me back to the '70's and the thing(s) I used the album cover for. Happy, sociable times and no damn Coronavirus - we could share back then. :P
Jerry Jeff and other musician songwriters like him including Delbert McClinton, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Goodman etc. are the greatest of my time. they make me smile, laugh, contemplate the past and the future and help me make it through the day thanks y'all
Sooooooo GREAT to hear this version again! It is going to be a Jerry Jeff month for sure. The one artist I go thriugh these phases with. Thanks so much for posting.
"when I die I swear don't put no stone on my grave, I'm sorry ought to be the epitaph, but spell a mistake" RIP Jerry Jeff, your songs brought me through good times and bad. High Hill Country Rain was my first introduction to you and I've loved your music ever since. "Sometimes I just wake up hummin' feelin' like the world is right..."
Best song ever, my boyfriend turned me on to him in 1982 . We would ride around all night and he would sing all of jjw's songs to me. I love listen to how and I still love listening to my forever man sing to me. Love you Baby forever and always.
THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS LOVELY WORK! OL' JJW IS ALWAYS A STELLAR SINGER-SONGWRITER TROUBADOUR COWBOY HIPPIE OUTLAW ANGEL. SAW HIM AND BROMBERG LOST GONZO BAND BACK IN EARLY 70s IN ATHENS, OHIO... VERY VERY SWEET!!! AND OFF THE LP NO LESS..WOW, LOVE THE FEEL!
That must have been something! I dream of that! And JJW would have been in his prime. Even if he was drinking, I always thought his drunk songs recorded in studio was the best! Cheers from Toronto Ontario.
A few years ago ( I haven't tried again, since ) Jerry Jeff's "Tried and True Records" website said this one was no longer available. Too bad, my 8-track ate it years ago, it was one of my favorites of his.
I used to have this on vinyl, and I've always loved this song. Thank you for posting it. The instrumentation is fabulous--the interplay between the guitars really moves me.
Saw JWW at Sunset Strip Bar here in Fairbanks Alaska bout 40 years ago. Small joint, got to talk with him afterwards.......I too hope for this at my funeral. easy cruisin
King of texas .. this man goes beyond country..he is way more than country he is a great American poet bc you Can> not like country music...and >love Jerry jeff...kind of like ... willie Nelson
This is the best ever version of the song performed by Jerry Jeff. I have the original LP. Seems not to be available as downloads from I-tunes or from concerts.
@@johnnyp8979 Correct, not sure why I wrote that, possibly got mixed up with Mr Bojangles, I am getting older and forgetful, Haha. What I will say is that the album 'Contrary to Ordinary' has been a favourite of mine since the '70's and would have been perfect with Mr Bojangles on it. 😊
I have found and listened to 4 great versions of this song tonight, all of them by Jerry Jeff Walker! Sure miss him. Let them ponies run Son!
Saw him sing it live
Always been my 'theme song'. Love this original version.
"I was contrary to ordinary, even as a child." How can any line in a song get better, and more honest, than that?

Song holds a special place in my heart
Awesome, well written song. Beautifully done. Jerry Jeff was an innovator:) God rest his soul

Same here
Well, I never lived my life through other peoples eyes......poetry at its best
This thing skips in the exact same spot my LP does. I'm sorry ought to be my epitaph as well.
It must be the master tape as mine does the same. Too funny.
Sooooooo GREAT to hear this version again! It is going to be a Jerry Jeff month for sure. The one artist I go thriugh these phases with. Thanks so much for posting.
Great song... Jerry Jeff is remarkable :) this is the first time I ever heard this version. I liked it better than the live version!
The album 'Contrary to Ordinary' is as close to perfect as my ears have heard and I have felt.
Been listening to it on and off since 1978.

it would be nice to sit down and have a glass of wine with the old boy and hear old stories by a fireplace with JJW
Sure wish I could get my hands on this CD or Album. Haven't been able to find it anywhere.
STILL PERFECT! ALWAYS SO.....YOU JUST GOT TO LIVE LIFE IN EPISODES!!

I'LL NEVER TIRE OF THIS...!!!!
EVEN THE SCRATCHES SOUND GOOD.....
saw him solo at Sturgus for the 48th. Not a big crowd Hey played his ass off. Love his stuff
Who knows that Jerry Jeff was with Circus Maximus in the 60's.. Did The Wid. Beautiful piee of music.

I was "contrary to ordinary", back when that was still possible..
A few years ago ( I haven't tried again, since ) Jerry Jeff's "Tried and True Records" website said this one was no longer available. Too bad, my 8-track ate it years ago, it was one of my favorites of his.
I can hear the crystalline cracklin' of the LP as I listen to this gem - for the first time. More listens to follow.
I love the whole Jerry Jeff vibe ! We used to play this music in the Florida Keyes back in the 70's . Camping on the beach for a month every winter !
Hell yeah
My very favorite. RIP Jerry Jeff. Fun times with you in Castle Rock and Parker in the early 80's.
I used to have this on vinyl, and I've always loved this song. Thank you for posting it.
The instrumentation is fabulous--the interplay between the guitars really moves me.
Jerry Jeff's best album
By far. The best.
Jerry is fabulous. I saw him at the Lone Star Cafe in NYC 1980 or so.
Never lived my life out of other peoples eyes...
Rest in Peace Sir

Hey, my album skips too!! Thanks for posting!!
Ha! Mine, too!
Another 🥰 JJW rendition 👍
The old scratching sound of the record player needle on the vinyl is quite cool.
Jackie Jack was my hero of the 70's. I have all those albums and love to put them on for a tour of memory lane. The innocence of being a teenager....
If I ever die I want them to play this at my memorial. And they better yodel along at the end!
That's right! Yodalaheho

Love Jerry Jeff
Heck of a fade out...
Can't begin to tell how

Sort of a cowpoke blues jam..! 😅
You're the lady, you're the lady, you're the lady, you.
I want my kids to play this at my funeral too. Then take my ashes and spread them over the farm
Classic tune from Jerry Jeff Walker. Reminds me so much of my father. It's his song.
And one eye on the open road....
This is the best ever version of the song performed by Jerry Jeff. I have the original LP. Seems not to be available as downloads from I-tunes or from concerts.
I love this...great memories of all our friends at the Farm. . We wore this album out. Glad to find it here. Best regards JJW, angie in Ontario Canada

Pure JJW....
Jerry Jeff brings this song to life but it was written by the great Billy Jim "Elwood Smooch" Baker! He's a funny clown that wrote a serious song!
This one’s for you, Nicky -from the Days of Wine and Roses*~~~
If we could all just live life in little episodes
