About a year ago I got a phone call from someone I assume was Nigerian (couldn't place the accent) claiming to be from Microsoft, informing me that they, Microsoft, have detected 'dangerous viruses on my laptop', but not to worry! Because they will help me erase them all and clean my system! I went along with it, acting all grateful and concerned about my laptop.
Of course, the 'procedure' he was talking me through was how to download one of those remote-desktop applications that allows someone else to take control of your laptop. He first told me to "Press the Windows key" on my laptop's keyboard. I went along with it and kept the guy on the phone for 30 mins - I could hear the guy getting more and more excited because usually he never gets this far.....
After pretending to go through _all_ the steps of allowing this guy to take control of my laptop, the time came for me to give him the pass code for the remote desktop software - obviously I made up some random number which didn't work for him. He started getting angry at _me_! Accusing me of not listening to him, doing something wrong etc.....
Eventually I told him "Ok, let's start from the beginning again..." I heard him sigh and say "Ok, on the software press...." - I interrupt him with "No - from the _very_ beginning...." ;). He then takes a deep breath and says "Press the Windows key on your laptop...."
    I say "What Windows key?"
He says "....The WIndows key! The Windows key on your laptop!"
    I say "I don't see a Windows key...."
He says "You don't see a Windows key...."
    I say "No - I own a MAC!!!"
After a moment's silence he says "Your laptop is a Mac."
    I say "Yup!"
He says "But you told me you saw and pressed a Windows key earlier...."
I say, with the most mocking sincerity, "_Did_ I?!" :D
He said I was a 'very bad man' for wasting his time like that. I politely informed him that it was _he_ who was the 'bad man', a cunt for attempting to take advantage of people, and informed him that I hope he dies in a grease fire.
    He hung up. ¯\..(ツ)../¯

i had a guy once pretend he was a girl from my state and was really somebody from nigeria lol. this one was sneaky to. they bought a paid membership on a dating site and contacted me, first pretended they were in my state. they even played a fake webcam but i could tell the person wasnt interacting right on the came, it was pre recorded. i knew something was up when they said they were in college yet everything they typed was horrible spelling so i started playing along. i kept going along with it because at this point i was interested in leading them on when they asked for money saying they went to africa for charity and were robbed lol. i ended up doing research on there email and found out who they really were. i lead them on for about a month saying i was going to give them a few grand and never did lol. since it was overseas nobody could do anything about it

I had to cancel my credit card because a phishing site fucked me good. I’m super savvy with tech, and build computers as a hobby. But we somehow had our router have its DNS hijacked, causing amazon and Netflix to redirect to clone websites. So you literally type in the proper URL, and you assume you’re fine. The only reason why I realized I was being fucked with (I assumed I needed to renter credit card info since I wasn’t logged in on my usual device) was because they wound up asking for social security, which made no sense. Anyway, just be careful of DNS hijacking.

During Covid my friend found job online thst he thought was great. Work from home and they were gonna send him a check to buy like company preferred equipment for computer. They sent like a $5000 check that looked very authentic. The scam is they say there was a mistake and they sent 5k instead of 2k. Youve deposited the check and depending on bank it takes bout 3 or 4 days for bank to reject check so on paper it looks like it is in your account. You take 3k out to pay them the mistake back and then few days later the deposit comes off your balance bcuz check is bad. So you have just paid them 3k out of your own money. If you have the money in bank obviously. There is more to it but its pretty sophisticated.😅

I always liked the "wrong check amount" scam, because why in the hell would a big company need me to fix their mistake? A legit company wouldn't have you send money, they would reissue the check.

My best friend's aunt got a call and was told that she had just won a cruise and all she had to do was give them her banking information. Her aunt isn't even all that old and she fell for it. My best friend ended up giving her money to put in the bank since those cruise agents cleaned out her bank account. That happened 10 years ago. Now, out Of gratitude. Her aunt and cousins turned their backs on her last year, right after her mom died because my best friend won't pay their credit card bills.

The reason why the scams are so obviously scams and full of spelling errors, dumb stuff, etc, is that the scammers don't want to waste time with people who will see through their scam.
Instead they want to find the most moronic of people to bite.
