At the 17th Grammy Awards, Millie Jackson and Aretha Franklin competed in the "Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female" category. Aretha's "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" took the win on that night in March 1975, while Millie's "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want To Be Right" did not. Nearly 50 years later, Millie tells Questlove Supreme why the category, and Aretha's win is a frustrating subject. Having been artists at the same talent agency, Millie also recalls confronting Aretha over something else entirely. This QLS episode with Millie and her daughter, singer Keisha Jackson, was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.

I love that you interviewed Millie Jackson and her daughter! I had the gift of working on a doc for public tv back in the day and we got to interview Millie Jackson. She is truly one of the kindest people I've met in the business. She takes no mess from anyone and she's gracious at the same time. So glad you've interviewed her, love your podcast!

As Aretha would say, "LIES, LIES AND MORE LIES." Ms. Franklin did not go two years without releasing a record in those days. As a matter of fact, in addition to multiple singles, she released an album every year of the seventies. During the year in question (1974) she actually released two albums. The single for Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing and the album from which it was culled were released in 1974, not two years before as Ms. Jackson and her daughter are claiming. Again, "LIES, LIES AND MORE LIES."

Thank you for this interview. I was thinking of Millie Jackson recently and wondering what was up with her, and a few days later, I find this recent interview. I remember seeing Millie in 1979, perform at Brooklyn Academy Music in New York. My date and I sat in the 7th row. Right in front of us, there was a man who was obviously drunk. This man would yell Aretha Franklin's name out of nowhere. Nothing else but Aretha's name. I'm sure people felt, why is this man yelling Aretha's name at a Millie Jackson show. No one said anything, we knew he was drunk. After about the 4th time he yelled "ARETHA FRANKLIN," Millie Jackson looked straight at the man, and yelled...NIGA, THE BITCH AIN'T HERE!!! The man didn't respond and never yelled out Aretha Franklin's name again during the show!!!

Re had her flaws too (dressing herself mainly, and living in a bubble - kinda like Mariah (love her) today). I love Millie. I Love Aretha and all the other greats...Whitney, Diana Ross (Supremes), Dionne, Minnie Riperton, Donna Summer, Patti (LaBelle), Gloria Gaynor, Chaka, Martha Wash (2 Tons), Sade, Jill Jones, Fantasia, Jennifer Holiday, Phyllis Hyman, Roberta Flack, Gladys, Janet, Missy E, Erykah, Tina Turner, Teena Marie, Mary J., Etta James, Aaliyah, Brandy, Monica, Anita Baker, and 100's more. After some of the Soul/R&B awards show snubs I saw occur back in the 90s and 2000s, Ms. Jackson's story sounds completely plausible; especially given that she was not a cookie cutter, goody-goody, play-the-role type of Soul songstress. She was her own thing. I have a greater respect for her refusal to compromise her style and vision knowing just how dirty the 'business' could be.

Aretha Franklin from 1961-1974 was vocally untouchable. No one with properly working ears was giving Millie Jackson a vocal award over Aretha Franklin. Hell, when cigarettes finally caught up with her and gave her that weird ashy tone she had the rest of her life, she was still the superior singer. Why are they saying Aretha Franklin hadn't put out a song in two years in the 70s? Ms. Aretha would have 2 to 3 singles out a year from the early to mid 70s. She might have slowed down around 78 or 79. But she was hot around the the timeframe they're discussing in this clip.

Her single from one of those albums (Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing) met the qualifications. I don't know how Millie got this nonsense in her head. She was noted as a song stealer in that if she sings remake it often topped the original. During Duke Ellington tribute she was singled out as documented by her older peers & said I'll give it back to you on the stage. Another thing, her prime was more impact full being that no singer could top her or match her. Whitney had peers we got to stop pretending she didn't, Mariah, Celine, & Toni later on. Folks really didn't start saying Patti's name in comparison to her until the last 3 decades or so. The only one that came the closest was Gladys & even then it wasn't much cause we only said hers voice is soulful but Aretha still tops her. She's really sat at the top by herself.
