15 Degrees Rotation per Hour

- A full-length video of an hour's worth of Earth rotation. They say the Earth rotates at the rate of 15 degrees an hour. 360 degrees in one 24 hour day. I have had some folks tell me that they don't believe the Earth is a sphere and must be flat and non-moving. They also say that if the Earth spins incredibly fast, it would sling everything off. Speed is relative to size. The immense size of the earth negates the perceived speed factor. So I came up with this little illustration.
NOTE: This is not to scale or even scientific BUT for illustration purposes only. I'm not here to explain the physics.
I coupled a small clock mechanism to the axis of an old decorative desk globe. Essentially, the globe was the same weight as a styrofoam ball and did not strain the clock mechanism. I sat a pointer near the equator and left a video camera recording the entire hour. It is painfully hard and boring to watch the progress. You can watch a BlueBloods episode or two Gilligan's Island episodes while you wait. Although the earth rotates on its axis at 1037 mph at the equator, it is deceiving in perspective of the sheer size of the earth. It rotates at 15 degrees an hour. Painfully slow to watch. Takes a whole day (approx 24 hours) to make one turn and only make 365 turns per YEAR.
Comments are turned off because I know who will gripe.
