What an awesome bird! I take a walk down a little river walkway everyday. I've been seeing a couple of these birds for the longest time and had always wondered what it was. I finally asked the right person who told me. I've been reading about them ever since to find out more info.. They are definitely a remarkable bird. Something you don't see often at least in my area.
There's a heron who comes every day to the pond by my window at work and I've never seen it catching anything, so it's nice to see that they do manage to eat some fish eventually.
Hi Steve, I'd like to ask permission to incorporate this wonderful video into a project I'm doing on a tragic landslide which occurred in Haverstraw, NY in 1906. With credit to your contribution, may I use it?
I just found your video and I truly enjoyed watching this magnificent bird fishing....Where do you live Steve...I am so jealous.....or where did you photograph this?
It's a miracle there are actually still fish left in places where these birds are active......Apart from catching their prey , they also spear them.......which is the reason the heron is called "Reiger" in The Netherlands, which means"impaler"....You see them even near canals in the inner cities, where apart from fish, they also catch rats.....
I've seen these birds stand completely motionless for hours. I wish I had that kind of patience when I was fishing!
they are like statues its amazing
I saw it for the 1st time yesterday...thought it was sleeping ahahha

In some languages, if you're six feet tall or above that, you're nicknamed Heron.
Which is why I love these birds.

Those birds can eat some huge fish, but this one was catching hors d'oeuvres, just appetizers. Maybe he got the main course later, lol.

+Alex Oliveira Thank you!
These miserable birds are detriment to Koi ponds, needless to say unfortunately the are protected #@!~%#!!!!!
Are koi endangered?
You Japanese are short so you don't have the use of 'heron' as a nickname for a tall person, like in other languages.
You can’t blame an animal for simply trying it’s best to survive. They need to eat too.
