Also, not sure if English is your first language but my point is that I don't care if someone criticizes this scene because I think it is so awesome. When everything goes flat in space they’re trying to represent a fourth physical dimension where she would technically be leaving our three dimensional space. Seeing any plane in space warp at an angle outside of 3D space is what would make it look as flat as a piece of paper. Her perspective isn’t exactly right since she would be seeing inside objects depending on what plane in space she was looking at, but it’s still a very interesting representation of four dimensional space.

In the end, it all comes down to dramatic effect. They can try to be scientifically accurate - time crystals notwithstanding - but in the end they are telling a story and must represent what’s going on to an audience, that might not know all the specifics and might not understand it otherwise.

@@ishkibable gravity does not bend light. light always travels a straight path and cannot be bent or redirected by any known force once it has been generated. gravity bends space and light travels along those bent space paths.

a Lens doesn’t directly bend light either; it just travels slower through the material. Gravitational time dilation could also cause that effect.
(But this only explains half of the gravitational lensing. Bending space itself causes the other half)

I have to admit, while I was generally disappointed with how the second season turned out (evil A.I. vs our heroes in a big dumb space battle as Resolution for the intriguing existential mysteries the show seemed to promise at the beginning of the season), this scene just floored me. It’s absolutely stunning and gorgeous and perfectly represents what a Trippy disorienting feeling time travel might cause if it were real. I just wish the show had done more to keep the writing on the same level as the stunning visuals and the mostly stellar performances.

I think the change in direction mid-season was purely because the decision was made to send Discovery into the future. The second half of season 2 isnt perfect but i think the long run what appears to be a misstep is going to pay off handsomely. Setting Season 3 in the 32nd century is probably the ballsiest move in the franchises history.

Hmm, no the social commentary about how these seemingly evil ghouls called the Klingons are actually people that deserve their existence and shouldn’t be extinguished, that’s not Star Trek. Also, the idea that we shouldn’t sacrifice our principles even in the face of extinction also Isn’t Star Trek. It that the show is so progressive it shows a homosexual couple as one of the most healthy relationships that I‘m genuinely invested in even though I am straight and admittedly used to be a little homophobic, that really isn’t Star Trek.

From an SFX point of view, this effect is not "perfection". The light distortions you see are supposed to be due to the warping of space-time.. however there are lots of close shots in this sequence of the lights bouncing/shattering on the angel suit.. which kind of ruins the illusion as you realise it's just the suit being sprayed with a spark generator. It is largely a pretty sequence, though

I love how amazingly scientifically accurate this scene seems to be, as far as I understood it this is the most realistic depiction of what time travel might look like from the perspective of the traveler.
She accelerates from the beginning, until she exceeds the speed of light at 01:39, at which point the evolution of the photons reverse direction. Only faster than light conditions can cause backwards in time travel, but such speeds would redshift incoming exterior light (presumably the photons surrounding Michael) and blueshift outgoing light, hence the red-blue effect around her and why the outside seems to be red from her perspective.
At 01:45 she leaves our conventional 3D space, which contracts to only a 2D segment of the block universe, indicating that she is outside space and time at that moment. Since she exited that segment of the block universe, she can select another slice (the point in the past) enter through that 2D segment and decelerate until she arrives in the past.
    Brilliant, I love it.

By the time I had watched (& rewatched) those shows, DISC had been up to season 3 & STSNW season 1. I was avoiding STDISC due to the negative reception by ST fans. Took the plunge late last year & honestly it is a spectacular show. This scene, music, thoughtful reuse of TOS & TNG sfx, visuals, acting, fight scenes, etc is indicative of that.

As perfect as this scene can be ,I found some incoherence :
1- she is in space she couldn't be moving like she did just before entering the wormhole.
2-the lights that passed her and hit her suit while traveling were supposed to be stars I guess.
3- her metal wings were not there when she was in the wormhole and appeared just before the exit

    • @bluemassgamer17
      @bluemassgamer17 2 роки тому +5

I could be able to answer those questions.
      1. A stable wormhole would have gravity in order to prevent the wormhole from immediately collapsing when entering. So she would be able to move alitte but she can't change her direction since the blackhole/wormhole gravity is so much greater than her. Thus she gets pulled in.
      2. I'm think that those aren't stars but light particles hitting her. As she continues to accelerate pass the speed of light. However those particles should be going through her. But it's sci-fi may as well be reality when it comes to the interior workings on a blackhole.
      3. Think the wings activate to push her beyond the speed of light. Those making the time travel successful instead of being stuck in the wormhole/black hole. Thus when she leaves the balckhole/wormhole for those moments she is red shifted.
I hope that helped you with your questions

While being completely horseshit in regards to actual or even imagined science of the Trek universe, I can't deny that it was very well done. The end of the 2nd season actually really impressed me as far as improving Discovery in the eyes of this old Trekkie. Still has it's issues but it's worth watching to see where they go with it in the 3rd season.

Truly a realistic time travel experience, given that this seemed the longest three minutes in my life. I came face to face with Eternity as I continually wondered, "Will this ever end?" I came to humbly acknowledge my mortality when I realized that with my puny human lifespan, I don't have time to watch this show.

As much hate as Discovery gets, this is a fantastic sequence. The only problem I have with Discovery is it's writing. It's definitely not as good as it could be, though it is getting better. Season 2 was certainly better written than season 1. I'm looking forward to seeing what season 3 will have in store!

A time travel suit instead of a ship? She had to fly to a location instead of taking a ship there? All the jumps (appearances,) of the so-called red angel were neccessary why? Yea the space ship fight scenes were really good but the red angel storyline did not make any sense, never showed why any of them were necessary or why they need go be connected ( why necessary)! The Enterprise was cool though, now I'd watch a Captsin Pike storyline!

First Signal: To rescue Reno and obtain the interstellar asteroid needed to save Terralysium.
Second Signal: Lead to Terralysium therefore identifying a safe place in the future.
3rd Signal: Saved the Kelpians from the Ba'ul and prepared them for the battle near Xahea
4th Signal: Lead to Boreth to obtain the time crystal which would allow them to travel to the future.
5th Signal: Lead to Xahea in order to get the help of the one person who could power the time crystal.
6th Signal: Guided Discovery into the wormhole
7th Signal: Sent to let Spock and others know that Discovery arrived safely in the future.
Each was necessary to defeat Control and keep the sphere data out of its hands. All of this was mentioned in the episode.

@@IsaacPiezac Well there are multiple timelines in Star Trek now. One could argue that Star Trek Enterprise exists in an alternate timeline created when the Enterprise E went back in time in First Contact. Because there was no record of an NX-01 prior to that, DISCO and SNW could also exist in this alternate timeline. The JJ Abrams movies are also a divergent timeline. I would say there are 2 or 3 divergent timelines at this time, could be more because of every time the crew went back in time to take part in historical events.
