The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Remember when you were 14 and the world was your oyster? New music weekly, new outrageous clothes that our parents hated. I looked forward to going to school every day.
My mother hated my long bangs. Said I should cut a window in them. I think she wanted those Anne Baxter Nefertiri bangs, one inch above the eyebrows.
The male dancer in the red vest who loses his hat is Broadway legend Michael Bennett who earned many Tony Awards for choreography and also won Best Director for "A Chorus Line".
The dancing was pretty elaborate. I don’t know how they remember all those steps.
Thanks! I wondered who choreographed this.
Would that be Donna McKechnie beside him in the white mini-dress?
Excellent dancers and choreography.
@@AntonHu I don't think it is her. She was a featured dancer on Hullabaloo on another network at this time.
Wow, look at those cars! Aston Martin, Austin Healy, Jaguar, all ragtops!
They'd be worth a fortune if they were still that clean today.
Imagine you inherit a forgotten old barn and in it are exemplary larger, these cars. the song is I think from 1966 .a Jaguar XKE. from 1966 already get for 140 000 dollars . And in the garage next door there is a Mercedes Benz 230 SL from 1966 and an Alpha Romeo Spider from 1966 😆
Yes!!!!!
Some classic British iron, all right!
And they're just scratching them up like some cheap-ass Ford.
I truly can't believe that the world was once cool enough for something like this to exist.

Shame on the UK governments for not making Petula a dame. A child star, a forces sweetheart, a great '60s star and continues performing to this day. Amazing!
She may have been offered an honour but refused it for personal reasons, as David Bowie did.
Another possibility is that when she married Claude Wolfe she may have become a French citizen thus not being able to receive a British honour.
I think she is a Dame, but I could be wrong.
@@cocoaorange1 she's not a Dame, her honour is a CBE.
I think Frank Sinatra made her a dame
Its a sign of the times alright.....Look at this compared to what we''re dealing with today !!!!!!🥺😮💨
It is a kick in the lower maximum 🤷
Calm down Boomer. There is a lot of great music today if you’d bother to look. But it’s more fun to complain and sound exactly like your parents.
Learn respect. The US is the least respective country of elders. You'll change your tune in a few decades when it's your turn. @@EdKazO-Vision

Respect is earned. And if younger people don't respect their elders or have a work ethic you approve of, I would ask "who raised them to behave that way?"
You want respect? Try treating others with respect instead of just criticizing & demanding it.
@@EdKazO-Vision I am no boomer and know modern music is bland. Modern pop lacks depth of complex counterpoint, backup harmonizing, lack of good choruses, lack of creative guitar solos. 1960's music experimented with use of sitars, Hammond organs, harmonicas, theremins etc.. Plus analog sounds better. I am a musician and listen to recordings in detail and take note. The non musician also listens to details whether they are aware or not. Modern music lacks creativity instrumentally, lacks lyrical poetry, instrument diversity plus deficient in finding new beats and progressions that have not already been done long ago. The song in video is not so good by 60's standards.
America clearly lost something truly tremendous when the Ed Sullivan show went off the air. It was an unparalleled venue for talent!
There is no longer a place for joyful entertainment. Now, everything needs to be a contest. Pathetic.
Great beautiful British Star, beautiful voice, beautiful British Cars, colour, confidence, how great were the 60's compared to our mixed up Country now
Back then old people were saying the same thing about the 60s. 😂
@@chuddlevideos . . .but at least we weren't eating TIDE PODS . . .
This was filmed in the USA. Also what do you mean by “mixed up” exactly? If you’re referring to the mess the Tories have caused over the past 14 years, I agree.
How easily I forget just how colorful the 1960s were
and we just loved anything British
B@@Ralphieboy I know that I sure did!!!!
It's not that the 60s were especially colorful, this was the era when most people had black and white TVs, so shows like this pumped color EVERYTHING as a way to convince people to buy new color sets and to make people glad that they bought them. The NBC peacock was nothing more than an ad for color TVs, and every show title sequence bragged "In Color" . . .
As a result of seeing the colors like this, fashion designers splashed colors around in real life.
Then, about 1972, people got bored with the circus colors, and they rapidly went away.
Disco was more glittery than colorful
On TV maybe and in the music world.
I was born at the right time, 1957. Old enough to remember the mid 1960s.

Yeah, but come on, you have to admit this is pretty corny.

It's a sign of the times.
Most of Petula’s songs pointed toward hope, love and new opportunities. Her songs always lifted my spirits.
I bet she sold a lot of Jaguars and Aston Martins. As an eight year old I was not looking for a car; but I loved her!
Me alegro! Buena suerte ✌🇨🇱

A British broadcaster recently stated "that a day without a Petula Clark song was a day without sunshine." I couldn't put it better myself!

1969 was the Zenith of America. I wish I could go back and live in the sixties forever......

I'm turning 60 early next year and still in denial about it. Then I watch this and realize I'm old enough to recall the late 60s. I was only few years old but seem to recall seeing this on Ed Sullivan show which was staple in our house back in 60s and early 70s. Where DID the time go?
I'm turning 70 this year and that's scary. I still remember the 1960's like yesterday, 1966 was a great year. Kids today have no idea!
@@pimpompoom93726Same age. Remember listening to British Invasion and Motown pop songs on the radio up in my room, watching The Avengers and The Man From Uncle on TV - my brother favored astronaut but I was definitely going for secret agent "when we grow up." That time between then and 60 is way too short once it is gone.

PET CLARK WAS ALWAYS A CLASS ACT.
Once upon a time, foreign cars like these roamed American streets. These were the Big Three from England, the Aston Martin, The Healey 3000, and the Jag. God, I miss the 60s British cars.

The earth, in so many ways, was much simpler and more innocent back then ...
No. You have forgotten the Viet Nam war, the assassination of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King, LSD, and cars that lasted at most 60,000 miles. Not simple at all.

Lest congestion because US population was 194 million(today 335 million). No mass school shooting and mass shooting rare. I will continue in another post.
@@northernbohemianrealist1412 In the 1960's the US was not a surveillance state with cameras monitoring every move. Travelling on an airline did not require a person to be touched and scrutinized like today by far. College tuition and health care was significantly cheaper in relation to average wages than today. Less state sales taxes, many states had no titles to cars, no special recycle taxes for tires and appliances when purchased, houses were much cheaper in relation to average wages in the 60's than today, people didn't get fired for expressing themselves on their own time like today due to social media and cancel culture. No blaring hip hop boom boom from cars(the equipment did not exist nor was music recorded such a manner for music was recording more in the mid range spectrum), it was a quieter time(FACT). Over half of top rated pop songs were love songs which set the culture in a better demeanor. It was easier to start a business in the 60's with less regulations and sign restrictions etc.. My mother's 1967 Cadillac convertible still runs with over 250K miles and the engine was never rebuilt(she got it in 1973). I currently drive a 1969 Cougar convertible 351W 4 barrel and it looks and drives great and will be around another 50 years plus. We just put a 69 Mach 1 back on the road for cheap and it had been mostly parked since 1995, it drives and runs good(brother bought it in 1980). Go see how many 1960's Corvettes and Mustangs are out there still. I believe most Corvettes built in the 60's and 70's still exist. Big chuck of 60's cars still exist, they became collectible because of their beauty and have been shipped all around the world. Its cheap restoring and repairing 1960's cars and not so difficult because most engine compartments were not packed tight, cars back then were made to fix easily.

I had the privilege of doing stage security for a performance Petula Clark did 3 years ago here in Southern California. Definitely one of my all-time favorite shows in the 7 years I’ve worked this venue, and so great to see up-close. “A Sign Of The Times” has long been my favorite of many great Petula Clark songs that, for me, go all the way back to the iconic “Downtown”-when I was 7 years old. Petula’s voice is so incredibly bright, and clear, and pure. Tim Kiley directed the Ed Sullivan Show in the 1960s.
Michael Bennett (April 8, 1943 - July 2, 1987) was an American musical theatre director, writer, choreographer, and dancer. He won seven Tony Awards for his choreography and direction of Broadway shows and was nominated for an additional eleven.
Bennett choreographed Promises, Promises, Follies and Company. In 1976, he won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical and the Tony Award for Best Choreography for the musical A Chorus Line.
In 1966 he staged this performance of Petula Clark's new hit "A Sign Of The Times" for The Ed Sullivan Show. You can spot him as the bearded dancer who, doing a head-pop of his own at one point, loses his cap.
