Once again we see how Kuss can ride when he doesn't have to pull the entire peloton up every mountain
We all know how Jumbo wants this race to go. Ving & Primoz seem to be 110% on board.
who do they want it to go? They want sepp to wwin?
They've decided that GC Kuss makes for a better story. Which it probably does, and I do like the guy, but seing TJV basically being free to decide the race between them as they see fit isn't much fun as a viewer.
Let’s see if kuss cracks on the angliru how much they’re on board. There’s no way either of these two are happy to sacrifice a grand tour, especially roglic who’s been preparing since the giro and isn’t getting any younger
@@jmsytbeyeh jumbo could see it as a way to sell themselves in the American market
@@HkFinn83 They're looking for a new main sponsor as well, so having a nice fairy tale story like this probably doesn't hurt. Everyone likes GC Kuss, after all.
Lenny was like: "No risk no glory huh?" would probably have won the stage without the crash, but I don't understand the hate that Costa is getting... why? because he ride smarter than others?
Is it really that smart to always do less than the others so that nobody wants to work with you? he is already known for that
@@permerte5118 it's a thin line, but in general it's smart if you have a sprint like he has
Because his waving his arms around behaving like he has anything so say about "pulling".
Sure it's clever, doesn't mean it's not annoying to looking at someone pulling the attitude.
@@suhr12 he's trying to get in the other riders head, nothing wrong with that too
I wished Kämna would attack straight after joining the others after his crash. Big chance of no cohesion again and would have been epic
I was thinking he would steamroll past those two and hope to hold it to the line. But, can't guess what was in his legs, maybe he needed that last K to sit on an recharge?
I thought the other two guys waited for him, so it was fair Play Not to attack Directly?
@@Schneebauer. they were definitely not "waiting" for him
@@ultimatist according to Spanish Media Rui Costa did wait for Kamna, but I have just seen the covers so I don't know where they got the information from

Seeing Jonas predict the Soler attack was hugely impressive. Need to remember this whenever his “race sense” gets questioned
For real, that was some next level situational awareness.
Great example of being the number 3 guy in the team and still being as switched on as he was as number 1, during the Tour de France.
JV rise him good~
what? it was a coincidence he looked behind as he moved out of the line and saw Soler already coming... pretty easy to start ramping up his own cadence to mark it. THen it's Kuss who doesn't follow - and is looking at Mas to defend his placing... who doesn't come through, and thus the 2 get a gap quickly.
As always, thank you for these great highlights, especially since you have to work late to get these out on the same day. Much appreciated!
Indeed! No other channel provides such background about tactics and how certain situations build up
Watching that live today I was saying "Remco, play the game a little". He chased way to many moves. Needs to gamble a bit. He's never winning those days if he doesn't.
such a fascinating stage, especially that jumbo uae game of chicken at the start, and then the last 5k with the kämna crash, group 1 syndrome and the 2nd breakaway almost coming back because of how long they stalled starting the sprint. great recap especially of the tactics from the start
Mad respect for L. Kämna!
As the dutch team they are, I can't wait to see Jumbo bringing to the sport the concept of "Total Cycling" where there everyone in the team is a captain and a domestique at the same time
That's a significant part of what you've been watching since early 2022. Merijn Zeeman asked Erik ten Hag for advice re team building because of his total football experience. One of the reasons I wonder why (even some Dutch) people keep expressing disbelief at the idea that they're truly riding the way they're clearly riding at the moment. Moving from the more traditional patrón plus lowly domestiques in a super macho sport, to an understanding of how being a true team will actually be much better for them and get them better results, at least till the rest catch up.
Oh, yeah, also one of the reasons Roglič likely wasn't just joking when he said ahead of the 2022 TdF that Jonas was their main leader, and before this Vuelta that Sepp might win it.
Dutch are the most narcissic people in Europe. They have so much ego... Looking forward to see how that team goes in the months/years to come, when they'll win absolutely everything and they will just fight each others. I bet they will fall apart.
😂😂😂
Jonas Vingegaard has truly become the Dr. Manhattan of 3 week racing. "Jonas, could you win this race for us?" "Ok I'll do it", "Jonas go kill this breakaway attempt and no witnesses please" "No problem", "Jonas we need to win the stage, are you up for it?" "Sure, I have nothing pressing atm". It's like asking a god to do your plumbing for you. "I'll do it, if it's ok that I also solve the climate emergency at the same time".
"jonas go kill this breakaway and no witnesses" 🔥🔥🔥🖋🖋🖋

This is what happens when you have three riders in Top 3 in GC... you're going to start attacking yourself when you move to cover threats to your podium positions.
Good point. Get yourself into a corner so to speak?
Sounds like a good problem to have
Why are people trying to see a problem with the situation JV is currently in. They wouldn't risk a Vingegaard vs. Soler situation while they can simply be in the top 3 with 3 riders when they countered that attack.
Absolutely! Jumbo has incredible depth and everyone's been riding extremely well. It's good strategy to keep the top three guys riding as co-leaders as long as possible, since that gives Jumbo three chances to win the Vuelta and a shot at sweeping the podium. If one of them falters, Jumbo can shift them to domestique mode at that point, and I have no doubt they would do so. Also, if Ayuso manages to displace one of them, I'm sure Jumbo would switch to a single-leader-surrounded-by-domestiques format to protect (or try to regain) the red jersey. However, if all three stay strong (and lucky -- no crashes or mechanicals) and keep the podium spots, I expect their relative positions will be sorted out by the mountains. I'd love to see Kuss win the Vuelta, but he's riding in his third grand tour this year while Roglic and Vingegaard each skipped one, so I don't know whether his legs will hold up in comparison with theirs. Kuss has looked really good so far, but the last week will be brutal and there's no way to gauge how much he'said got left in the tank.
In contrast, Roglic was able to take time after the Giro to recover before preparing for the Vuelta. He came here as Jumbo's team leader; if he hits another level next week (as I've seen him do in other races), he could ride away from everyone on L'Angliru.
Vingegaard didn't have the recovery and prep time of Roglic, but he got stronger each week of the TdF. If he's able to repeat that pattern at the Vuelta, he'll probably take the jersey on Stage 17 and keep it all the way to Madrid.
There's also the possibility that Ayuso will have a phenomenal Stage 17 and end up with the jersey. I don't think that's likely to happen, but I'm not ready to count him out.
Should be a great week of racing, no matter who wins!
Kämna is in crazy condition this Vuelta
Non gc Remco is a loose cannon. And it seems Jonas is the strongest. Will he let Kuss have this assuming Sepp doesnt falter?
Big break away with Soler. If JV decided to let the break away go it would be Vingegaard vs. Soler with a small risk of Vingegaard losing from Soler. If they bring it back they have 3 riders for the GC.
You have to close Jonas down if you're Jumbo.
Especially with the amount of sickness running through the riders.
They didn't chase down Jonas, they chased down the breakaway group. @@luckyspurs
Damn wtf Remco pulled 2 breakaways back to back, that is crazy.
Yes, but not in a good way...
Jumbo chased Jonas because they see him as a gc threat for their leader Kuss #sepptember
dig your thumbnail.
oh man, this jumbo visma is dominating this year
Costa fine like wine
Because a man from Portugal won I have to do it...
SIUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, the anger when riders use tactics to play in their favor. Ha ha, I know how frustrating it can be and people yelling. But that is an art form, if you don't understand it so be it, but it is beautiful chess on the road.
Damn, they really are going to win it for Sepp Kuss. Holy shit.

No they’re not. Jonas will take it for himself
I love the way you pronounce Soler. Yo do perfect without pronouncing the final R. He is Catalan and Catalan surnames like that are pronounced Solé. Not Soler. So perfect Catalan pronouncing ❤
I am honestly impressed these last two stages had "normal" bike racing.
I thought they would be a complete field blowup with the peloton being the smallest group and an impossibly defined breakaway.
Costa deserved a win. Anyway, Remco faced the effects of yesterday’s over exertion. Hope he recovers and wins another stage.
Remco will win Vuelta because he will breakaway next week in the mountains and win by 30 minutes! I call it first here!
@@mracer8😂😂😂😂This is not video game.
@@mracer8 Remco had a great win yesterday but the only reason he was allowed to get so far ahead is because he is no longer a GC threat anymore after his bad day.

Patrick perfectly explains the logic why Jumbo chased down the group containing Jonas and still ppl here post stupid conspiracy comments.
Why did TJV chase Jonas? Well, they didn’t… They did chase Soler to send a message to the other gc riders
I think we as cycling fans need to understand what TJV is trying to do: Finishing 1,2 and 3 on the podium. Not because they think it’s funny or the bash the fans watching. No the one and only reason they are trying this is for the money they get for those places. Would you throw away money so everyone else finds it more enjoyable to watch? Don’t think so…
Besides this, who’s fault is it TJV dominating this Vuelta? There’s because they are to good? Or are the others teams just slacking? Of course the fight in the tour between Jonas and Pogacar was much more exciting and fun to watch, but that was mainly due to Pogacar's will and ability to win. And not because TJV let him win ones in a while… There is no opponent like Pogacar in this Vuelta, so why do we expect TJV to make it exciting?
Let’s enjoy potential history in the making and hope other teams are doing their homework for next year
If Jonas are not having stomach problems anymore, he will be able to win on the Angliru stage but i think TJV wants Kuss to win if he does not brake on that stage. Anyhow TJV will make history taking all 3 Big stage races this year.
Considering that at the end of the day they were still 1 2 and 3 I think they can get away with chasing teammates for now, but that being said it's still a grand tour and anything could happen.
Remco will call this Vuelta a success if he gets the KOM and places in top 10.
I would agree. That a successful race imo
One of the commentators mentioned the top 10 thing. I wouldn't have thought Remco would care that much, though - KOM + 2 stages probs better
Wouldn't everyone call that a success, with already two stage wins on top?
Remco told Belgian journalists that he’s planning in loosing a lot more time on tuesday, in order to recover for wednesday and not present himself as a threat anymore to the GC guys - top 10 seems unlikely then I guess
@@arendwillems9271 yeah true just read that. Top 10 doesn't mean much anyway compared to stage wins and KOM
Thank you LR -- your explanation of tactics (and the discussions in these comments) have helped me progress from just a casual spectator each July to really enjoying the wider world of road racing. I was on my own trying to follow the Tour of Britain (yay WVA!), but I'm looking forward to all your upcoming coverage!
Whilst I respect Rui Costa in that he won the stage, I just don't like the way he goes about it. The tactics he employed explains why he is not well liked in the peloton 🤔
The Costa vs Buitrago battle was a pure - experience vs youth scenerio, I'd bet Buitrago will have have bigger balls next time for it.
Sucks that kamna crashed, then Costa wouldnt have won and buitragos mission would have succeded
He doesn't need bigger balls, he needs bigger legs. Watch the final sprint, Costa's clearly working with more powerful bio-pistons than the other two. Look at the size differential between Kamna and Costa coming across the line.
I hate to see anyone crash, but arguably Kamna would've had less of a lead if he'd been riding conservatively enough to avoid crashing, in which case Costa might have won anyway. As it was, the cat-and-mouse between Costa and Buitrago (plus how quickly Kamna got back on the bike) gave him a second chance at the stage, but Costa was just too strong at the finish.
Congrats for the channel and the videos. Really nice content
Costa is so smart, but annoying at the same time. I get the tactics but i don’t like him at all
Costa. He always has been cheeky bloke.
Remco was paying for the theatrics he did on stage 14, lol!
Isn’t this the reason you’re employed by them?😂
SIESTA DAY TODAY
That's Tratnik that let the Gap open on Jonas and Soler
Great stage to finish off the ToB today for extra cycling viewing.
GC KUSS!!!!
I didn't see Jumbo V 'attack' Jonas at all. "Collaborate", completely. "How can we distance the whole field and place ourselves at the top of the GC? At this point, Remco had been long dropped (he was down ?? 3-4-5 min ??)... attacking him would have been mere confirmation. So who were they attacking? "Anyone else in #2 and #3 of the GC."
Did you even see the race? Remco had to pull back every attack from the break away during the climbs. Everybody was looking at him. If he'd just done his share, he'd probably won again.
"He crashed really well". :P
It was a bit curious when Jumbo brought the whole mountain squad including both the recent grand tour winners to the Vuelta, after a great season already. Now we all know what they are up to: they want to win all grand tours in 2023, and they are going to do it with Kuss.
They can attack the jumbo guys all they want, but the biggest mistake is already done, and that was letting jumbo visma take the red jersey, in any grand tour it is not good to let them take the GC jersey it is almost mission impossible to take it back, Jumbo is so good in defending the GC jersey
But the attempt at attacking them will be good for entertainment
Couldn't Remco just call the other guys bluff and say hey I am just here for the kom point I'll pull some if everyone does!!!
Sepp has done his work for Jonas in TDF . He is the man that Jumbo must work for. No questions unless he cracks. Jonas had his win, Primroz isn’t the man.
Kämna is a legend
Disappointed that no one found an opportunity to pull up stumps today :(
2:32 I notice you don't form possessives. Is that an Oz thing?
Another outstanding Vuelta stage coverage by LR 👏
Kooos Road Glitch Winger Guard and the whole TJV team ❤❤❤
They chase due to GC KUSS
Also for Roglic’s podium.
You can never depend on other teams to do what you think they might do! It's just saver to do it yourself!
Remco is just going to cause havoc since he is out of contention. He will probably do this every stage. It's great to see I.M. to get the win.
I think I can speak for a lot of us riders that we want to see Sepp the🇺🇲 flying 🦅 to win the Vaulta!
Good comments over the videos .....😅
Nah UAE
VAMOOOS
why does broadcast start in like middle of the race ? not sooner ?
The Vuelta is kind of the “low budget” grand tour.
Because EuroSport is busy showing women's triathlon reruns from April.
Rui Costa not pulling turns?? Surely not??
Buitrago did on last climb every work not Costa😂
Medium mountain transition stages are my absolute favorite
Rui Costa never wants to pull. I think he lacks a sense of direction so he feels most safe when he as a rear wheel in front of him to stare at.
I don't remember how he rode when he won the world road race championship, but today was all about strategy.
Christian Vandevelde over on Peacock says the riders would joke that Costa would count his pedal strokes during each stage. He called him "cold blooded". High praise actually
I caught that comment, too. I know some cycling fans don't care for Costa, but I enjoy watching a cagey cyclist outthink the competition the way Costa did for this win. (Maybe a little of that will rub off on Evenepoul, who might have taken the stage if he'd been just a bit more strategic and not done quite as much work throughout the day.)
Kuss!
It's not the same Rui Costa as in 2013 so he can only beat better riders by being clever as he did perfectly, maybe he could pull on the descend more but it end-up with the win
The amount of sugar Jumbo put in their bottles is impressive.
Remco got humbled in this Vuelta. Jumbo has the four horseman, and they work well with each other.
🎉
They chased Vingegaard because they're enemies of entertainment and real ciclismo
Jonas is p-ssed off big time and have threathed to leave Jumbo Visma according to danish media. So could be costly what Jumbo did to him yesterday.
Source ? I think you just dreamed it 😂
@@annegkst8266 Danish media outlets TV2 and BT
Danish media is saying absolutely literally nothing of the sort. Just in the unlikely case that anyone would believe that comment.
remco likes to do a time trial ignoring group dynamics tactics, stop victimizing him
Problem is that he gets frustrated then when no one will work with him. Time trialling can mean you end up as Billie no mates.
one repetition. two repetitions would be three climbs
Ten reps = doing an exercise ten times
One rep = one time.
Rep is short for repetition, better luck next time
Good information on this site. I wish he would take a breath now and then between sentences as it would be easier to listen to.
Was Rui Costa's refusal to pull, bad form or fair tactics?
He’s using his companions desire to be on the podium against them. He’s also maximizing his sprint ability. Seems legit.
Christian Vandevelde spoke about it. Called Costa "cold blooded" but said it admiringly
was that jonas personal decision or a spur of the moment team directors decision.
I actually wonder this, too. I don't know if the DS could have realized what was happening that quickly, just seemed like a quick in-race decision from Jonas which is kinda fascinating as we seemingly don't see those often.
@@josephsong8911 I assume they were talking about the decision to follow Soler's wheel
I think the team has decided that if someone that's dangerous goes from long range, Jonas follows.
He's worst in the GC currently and probably is the best at these longer efforts.
This way they can 1. force other teams to chase, 2. demotivates a lot of guys in that escape group from riding and 3. if they somehow can't bring the escape group back and they take a load of time, they still have someone first in GC.
@@Timqweyep, furthermore maybe Roglic isn't feeling super good

What was Vingegaard thinking in the first place?
he countered soler's attack
@@sobangja As if other teams would have let Soler have a free pass (teams like BORA and Movistar for example)
He's defending his podium position.
@pauljansen1137 Bora had Vlasov in that move. It's just extra insurance. It demotivates many of the guys in the front group riding with Soler and Vlasov and on the off chance you can't bring it back and the escape group takes minutes, you still keep the #1 GC spot
He was controlling the race with ease.
Why was it remco’s job to do all the work?
Did you watch stage 14 yesterday? No one in the break wants him there after that.
I want Jonas to win the Vuelta, not Kuss.
Kuss is one of the main reasons vingegaard and roglic won their gcs. Van aert is nice but cracks in mountains kuss is the last man
