  • This week, Chris Pritchard and Lee Johnston are joined by legendary former rider Phillip McCallen.
The boys caught up with Phillip the day after he took part in the Legends Lap at the 2023 Manx Grand Prix, which, he said, helped reaffirm his decision to retire.
Phillip talks about growing-up in Northern Ireland; and discusses the difference between his ‘nice guy’ attitude in the pits and his ‘uber-competitive’ side on the track.

Having Lee there for this interview is brilliant.. current racer asking the insider questions & Chris asking outsider questions that a fan like myself would like to know. Really really good interview. Perfect combination. Smashed it with this one 👏👏🤝

It wasn't all TT and Ireland though. We were really lucky in Yorkshire because Phillip used to come over to Olivers Mount. And I'm talking when the racing there was hard with full grids of top road racers and many who were competing in British championships. Phillip was absolutely on it, frightening to watch, he raised things to a new level. Look at the records he set at Scarborough, stats don't lie. Such a great rider, remembered very fondly by many Yorkshire road racing fans. So good that he survived it all and is still around to entertain us with his stories. Take care, what a legend.

I got the bug at Olivers mount, not surprising as my first race was Agostini blasting the MV round the hairpin and through the woods!

Does that race still take place, or have the destroyers of freedom done it in?

I watch Philip race all his TT career. I remember one year sitting in the lay-by at Quarry Bends ( another spot you can't watch from anymore) and closing my eyes when he went past as he didn't take the same line everytime, but the guy is a true legend. The pinnacle of any TT competitor is to be Honda Britain rider. Philip achieved that goal and excelled.
    Respect Sir, total respect.

Not just a fantastic rider (he was racing when I was a youngster) but what a knowledgeable and interesting guy. Watching this was like picking up a book you cannot put down.

Forget " never meet your heroes " as I met one of mine when I met Phillip. Having brought his autobiography I contacted him prior to TT 2015 and arranged to meet him outside his hotel to get him to sign it. He was as good as his word met me and signed it. Then seeing I also had another TT book signed that and then without me asking him to went off and got Linda Dunlop to also sign it. If it ever they go on Ebay I won't be here that's for sure. Phillip was a great racer and gave no quarter to anyone and it was a privilege to meet and chat with him. As I always say and this includes Lee try and get to speak to F1 drivers as easily as we can our Road Racers it won't happen. Even if you pay hundreds of pounds to get access to the paddock area. Chris you might understand this I can even remember being given a ticket to gain access to Dover Castle when the Tour last come over and still didn't get to speak to any Tour riders that's how lucky us TT fans are.

I met Phil McCallen during a coach tour of the TT course… not only is he a legend of the sport he is a really nice down to earth guy, he gave us a good 10 minutes for a chat and took pictures with us. Real class and humble.

That was one of the best interviews I can understand why Joey told honda to give Philip the ride because you can see the focus, perfection, and commitment this guy has in spades.

Phillip McCallen was the proverbial Indian Rubber Man. How he survived those crashes at Deer's Leap and Ireland's Bend (UGP), and Quarry Bends, Waterworks and The Nook (TT), I will never know. Absolute Crazy Horse.

Seriously, how did he not die or get irrecoverably injured?
I can’t fall without injuring myself just road running, and that is under 10mph.
I have a friend who’s trained in unarmed combat, may have been judo, and he falls all but instinctively in such a way that his injuries are minimised.
Do professional riders get training like that or merely not to fall off in the first place?

As ever Chris……ohh … and Lee, superb,……..and your man Philip was one of the most compelling riders to have watched around the TT course…..11 wins doesn’t tell the whole story, his accomplishments on the roads was amazing , to watch him going over Gillys Leap back in the 90s at the skerries when he was in his prime, was unreal……top vlog…👍👍👍😉🇮🇲⭐️

I have for much of my adult life recognised road racers as the most outstanding competitors in motorsport. Talented, brave, foolish, inspiring, indomitable, just darn impressive people.
And they all speak differently, but there’s no mistaking that intensity, commitment and aggression that’s in all of them.
They are also among the softest hearted, kindest people when off duty or when retired.
I don’t care that Michael Dunlop will take no prisoners in preparation & on the road. I’ve heard too many tales of his kindness to those who are down. His uncle was the same. I know less about his father.
They I’m sure don’t want to be revered, they just will to win.
    But I revere them nonetheless.
I take my hopelessly inadequate hat off to them. They’re true aliens, in the most complimentary use of the word.
