    I love the shape of this opal! The white really sets off the colours beautifully, Roy. The asymetrical organic shape would be lovely with a minimum of the right thickness silver wire, is what I'd do with it if I had something like this, as a light catching pendant. It's gorgeous!

    im just asking. im ain't no expert.
    but why do you use 80 sintered diamond 240 sintered diamond 350 sintered diamond and just then you use the nova bits...
    i might be wrong but isn't this way better: 240 or 80 sintered diamond to remove sand 280 nova to smothen out and pre-shape 600 nova to shape 2000 nova to smothen out even more then 10 000 nova to polish mayby at the end use cerium oxide to give it a nice shine.

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  3 роки тому +1

      If you go from a 80 or 240 grit diamond to the black Nova you will be using the black Nova for hours to remove the scratches and wearing the Nova away. Also a 10000 Nova is way overkill for opal.
      The progression I use here is almost exactly the same as what is used on a cabbing machine when cutting most stones especially opal.

    Hey roy, i have a question about cerium oxide. Recently ive had problems getting a good polish with it, it doesnt stay in the slurry solution long and clumps up. Ive noticed this ends up putting fine scratches onto my opals. I dont think ive done anything differently than usual, any ideas why my cerium is doing this?

    • @nancycurtis3230
      @nancycurtis3230 3 роки тому

      May be a different grade or a bad lot. Just a thought.

    • @RoysRocks
      @RoysRocks  3 роки тому

      I would just add more water. Some cerium (especially the finer stuff) requires more water. Using it thick can work quite slowly. Even if you use it really thin it can still work you just need to keep dunking the felt in it.
      Also make sure you dont allow any contamination to get in. That includes opal dust. My container is always covered and sealed when I am not using it.

  • @jimconnor6476
    @jimconnor6476 3 роки тому

    • @RoysRocks

      I carve just about every day and this set has last over a year now I think? The black is starting to lose shape but thats my fault. Opal is so soft it doesn't have a huge impact on the burrs whereas the knock-off novas last about 1-2 stones.
